Am I wasting money?

Baby due first week in March. I was going to buy a snow suit for walks in the pram etc but apparently it's a waste of money 🤦🏻‍♀️

What are essentials for a march baby?

A jacket, hat, blankets, one of those car seat wraps - you need them wrapped up outside but unwrapped in car or building so they don't over heat.

KatnissMellark · 05/01/2019 16:47

Wait and see what the weather is like. The shops will still be there. You'll obviously needs the basics- 10 newborn vests, 10 newborns sleep suits with foldover mits, 3 blankets, hats, muslins etc. Then just see what you need. If it's hot and sunny you'll need a parasol, if it's Baltic get a pramsuit.

welshweasel · 05/01/2019 16:47

I don’t get the point of snowsuits until they’re old enough to be sat in the pushchair and are likely to kick blankets off. Just use a blanket or two.

LaBelleSausage · 05/01/2019 16:49

Don’t bother to buy one now - we may have a mild March or we may have a freezing one. You may have a 6lb baby or a 9lb one.

You will also probably have a couple of weeks where the last thing you want to do is walk around outside (moreso if you have an episiotomy or section) so I would wait.

My November 2017 baby has only worn a snowsuit/pram suit once in his entire life and we were gifted four of them.

PotteringAlong · 05/01/2019 16:49

Wait and see. If it’s cold you can buy one then.

Bigonesmallone3 · 05/01/2019 16:51

My baby was due 1st March, born 20th of Feb and I had her in a snow suit for walks along the seafront as it was fresh!

SweetheartNeckline · 05/01/2019 16:52

I didn't use snowsuits with my winter babies as they were in the carrycot and, as PP have said, you can layer them up.

Snowsuits and thick coats shouldn't be used in car seats or slings either, so little point until October/November when they're 6 months or so, sat up in a pushchair.

MeadowHay · 05/01/2019 17:35

DD is 6 months and she got a 6-9 snowsuit for Xmas but she hasn't worn it and I'm not sure she will, because she has a footmuff on the pushchair anyway and I think snowsuit + footmuff is probably really overkill? As it's not like freezing weather atm, hasn't been less than 2 degrees here and often much warmer than that. So I wouldn't bother with a March baby.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 05/01/2019 18:14

I had a baby on 11th March. It snowed on the day I had her and we did use a pram suit a few times- I’ve certainly got photos of her in the car seat in one anyway. Don’t particularly think they’re a necessity but hey neitber is most of the stuff you buy!

ReginaPhalange89 · 05/01/2019 18:15

I wouldn't personally, I have a March baby and it was roasting the day I had her lol

I don't think they're necessary for a newborn. Even if it was really cold, they're not suitable for use in a car seat, and if they were in the pram they'd be well protected from the wind/cold in normal clothing with blankets and a warm coat.

confusedandemployed · 05/01/2019 18:23

DD was born 25th Feb in a freezing cold spring. I didn't use one and we walked loads (with the dogs). She would have 3 or 4 layers and be in the sling, then a shawl over that if it was really windy.
Tbh I've always been quite uncomfortable with the idea of snow suits for babies, because of their inability to regulate their body temp. With layers this is way easier to deal with.

OhTheRoses · 05/01/2019 18:28

Footmuff, snuggly fleece jacket, and plastic thingy over pram to keep out wet and wind.

Hiphopopotamous · 05/01/2019 19:00

Better to do lots of layers. Then if they fall asleep and the weather improves/you go inside for coffee etc you can just take some blankets off without waking the baby.

TheOrigFV45 · 05/01/2019 21:55

I have 2 March babies and never used snowsuit preferring layers of clothes and blankets.

user1471426142 · 06/01/2019 08:58

I’m debating this as well. My first was a summer baby so I didn’t need one. We used them during the winter for her but like others on here I found them quite annoying. Mainly used them on long walks as they were generally too hot for shopping or doing anything going between inside and outside. However, I think baby no.2 will be outside more while we’re at parks etc with the toddler.

NaomiJ11 · 06/01/2019 15:23

My baby is due Feb and I was the same wasn't sure whether to get one but my mum got us one anyway. I do remember it being quite cold last March though and it snowed. I do agree with everyone else though just wait and see what the weather is like if you think it's too cold for the baby the shops are always open. Asda do a few nice ones for about £15.

DappledThings · 06/01/2019 17:05

I had two winter babies. Neither wore a snowsuit till they were walking. MIL bought one for DD that still has tags on and is a size too small now. Pointless for babies.

ChanklyBore · 06/01/2019 17:11

It’s really difficult to find an ocacasion to use a snowsuit for a newborn I find. Or any baby up until the time they are running about playing in snow, for us anyway!

They can’t wear snowsuits in the car. They can’t wear snowsuits in the baby carrier. They might be able to wear snowsuits in a pram but if it is actually snow on the ground you aren’t going to be taking a pram out and then you are back to the baby carrier problem again. You can’t really use a big snowsuit if you’re just wandering round the shops or actually planning to go inside anywhere....basically I found them very very impractical

Cheesenacho123 · 06/01/2019 17:14

I don’t think they are a waste of money tbh. However my son was born mid November so we had a good 6 months wear of a snow/pram suit. Marks and spencer do some lovely ones. We got like a blue fleecy one with Dino on that was padded as a gift so much so the following winter I bought him another in the next size myself. I wouldn’t get one at the moment because it’ll start warming up from March onwards but would get one for next winter.
As a general rule to follow, babies can’t regulate there temperature very well and always need to be one layer more than you in winter until there out the newborn stage (maybe later but idk).

Nothisispatrick · 06/01/2019 17:15

As pp said they can’t wear them in the car or carrier, and in a pram blankets are way more practical as you can just pull them off when go inside. DD has one and has hardly worn it so far this winter, and she’s growing out of her 0-3 month stuff so probably won’t wear it many more times.

DappledThings · 06/01/2019 17:57

we had a good 6 months wear of a snow/pram suit

See I think of pramsuits and snowsuits as totally different items. Pramsuits being fleecy and one extra layer, very useful. Snowsuits being fleecy on the inside, bulky and waterproof on the outside and useless for non-walking babies as they're too thick.

So depends what you're talking about OK!

whatswithtodaytoday · 06/01/2019 18:04

I'm due end of February and am not planning to get one. I'll layer up the clothes and get a cosy fleecy cardigan type thing, plus blankets in the pram.

Last year's April snow was very unusual, and March can be absolutely glorious.

Bunnybaubles · 06/01/2019 18:56

My DD hated her thick pram suites so ended up just snuggling her up with warm blankets.

TerriB1984 · 06/01/2019 19:40

My DD was born in January and I bought a second hand one for £2.50. She hardly wore it. The first time she wore it she got a horrible heat rash and after that I was paranoid about her being too warm so preferred to just layer up with cardigans and blankets etc.
