I have heard off a few people that Cotside beds are something you need with a newborn , is this true ? Was just trying to save money as I’ve been given a normal cot from my sister where the side doesn’t come down

A bedside cot or crib will only last so long. Eventually you'll have to upgrade so id save yourself some money and take the one from your sister Smile

Because the advice is to have baby in the bedroom with you alot of people op for a bedside cot like a chicco next to me.

You could have baby in a normal cot if there is room in your bedroom for it.

Or baby could go in a moses basket.

I got my chicco next to me second hand to save money, then just got a new mattress.

I’ve been wondering about this, whether to spend on one of these nex to me cots, or whether it’s ok to have baby in a big cot at the end of the bed..?

TwinkleMerrick · 04/01/2019 20:54

Don't bother, cost a fortune and they grow out of them really quickly. I had a second hand Moses basket, got a new mattress for it. She grew out of it by age 3 months! I put her in her cot (next to my bed) she loved it. So glad I didn't buy an expensive bedside crib thing. Good luck xx

We would've been lost without ours. We don't have enough room for a cotbed in our bedroom.

Maybe if you're just planning on buying a cot instead of a cotbed you'll have enough space.

We have a next to me still using it and ds is 1 in a week
We’ve got a compact cot for when he can roll/pull himself up

Hiphopopotamous · 04/01/2019 21:18

My kid outgrew the next to me at 4 months. We put a travel cot at the end of the bed before he went to his own room.

Milligan123 · 04/01/2019 21:20

We have invested in a next to me crib, but only because we didn't have to buy a normal cot as my fil restored dh childhood cot, probably would have just got a normal cot otherwise

mortifiedmama · 04/01/2019 22:24

They aren't essential but I loved mine. I bought mine second hand and got a new mattress.

We couldn't fit a normal cot in our old room though. DS lasted until 7 months in the snuzpod though.

Wintermam · 04/01/2019 22:26

Cotbed, best of both worlds

Eh1112 · 04/01/2019 22:34

We used a full size cot with both of ours (currently 2 and 5 months). We did use a Sleepyhead in it for the first four months though.

We have a Sunbury Cocoon. We travel a lot and will be emmigrating when baby is 6 weeks so have no idea what room we will have. We also will need a mosquito net so got the Cocoon as a cure all. Hoping that room will be big enough for us to go straight to a proper cot bed once baby is too big for the Cocoon before moving out of our room. Flying by the seat of our pants.

sh13 · 05/01/2019 15:57

Brilliant thanks everyone I think il save money and stick with the normal cot as we have enough space in the bedroom -unless a second hand one pops up x

Our baby is in a cot bed because I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed with a next to me cot. Not with my bedside table too.

He settles in it fine, hopefully it’ll mean he’ll be ok when he’s moved into his own room when he’s older.

LeeMiller · 05/01/2019 16:46

I'd see how you get on. We reassessed where he'd sleep once he arrived. Lots of newborns don't want to sleep in big cots, Moses baskets etc. Our DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and I love our next to me cot. I had thought it was unnecessary but I used one in hospital and loved it, and ordered it on the day we came home when I realised I couldn't physically lift him in and out of the cot or carrycot after birth. It is amazing to roll him off me into it after a feed, I can sleep with my hand on him to comfort him, and it's also useful for middle of the night nappy changing without getting our of bed. It is very early days but has really contributed to us getting semi decent nights' sleep so far.

BlessedbetheFruitLoops2 · 05/01/2019 16:54

We had a Moses basket for dd and will use the same for ds due in 3 weeks. We got it second hand and ordered a new mattress for each baby. Dd was in hers until 3 months then slept in a travel cot in our room until she was old enough at 6 months to go in her own room.
My worry with a next to me crib was it leading to co sleeping. I like the physical barrier even though the basket was right next to the bed.

blackcat86 · 05/01/2019 17:06

We started with a Moses basket and now use a normal cot. DD has a cot bed in her nursery and a standard cot in our room. You can absolutely use a normal cot if you'd like to although the Moses baskets are nice to start with if you can find a reasonably priced 2nd hand one.
