Advice on surviving a New York trip in first trimester?

Hi all,

Got my BFP on New Years day, think I'm around 5 weeks! This is my first and so far I have no symptoms apart from missed period and sore boobs.

I am going to New York next week for 6 days and am now dreading the trip that I have been so looking forward to for the past few months! I am guessing that I won't be able to be as full on as I originally planned as nausea and tiredness may kick in while I'm there.

My question is, has anyone got any advice on how I can survive this trip? Normally I rely on berocca to curb jetlag, but I have read on the packaging that it's not suitable for pregnancy; are there any other similar remedies that are safe that anyone knows of? Or any must haves that I should pack in my case, should nausea kick in?

Any tips (or reassurance Grin ) much appreciated!!

Keep some food on you to snack on at all times incase any symptoms kick in whilst you’re there! You might be totally fine fingers crossed for you. Try and stay awake the first day you get there and sync in with the local time for sleep as soon as possible. Keep rehydrated and drink lots of water when you’re out and about. My nausea didn’t kick in until around 8 weeks + I was around 4 weeks when I was in Sardegna didn’t even know it as it was unplanned! Didn’t feel any different. Have the best time I LOVE NYC!!

I did New York at 10 weeks. It was fine. I’ve been really lucky with symptoms though - no sickness.

However, I did struggle with tiredness but we just prioritised what we wanted to do. We woke up at 7am and did full days of siteseeing and shopping etc. Then back to the hotel around 7pm and out for a meal. Was in bed by 10:30pm at the latest each night and I don’t think it affected my trip at all.

So look at your plans and just highlight the ones you definitely don’t want to miss.

Try not to dread the trip you’ll have a great time and hopefully you will be lucky and not have sickness.

Also - wrap up warm. It was freezing while we were there! (November!)

Oh when we went back to the hotel - I had a quick nap each time 😴

We went to New York when I was about 6 weeks. Absolutely fine despite some fatigue. The hardest part for me was that it was absolutely baking hot and there wasn't much shade when we went to the statue of liberty etc. Obviously you won't have that problem this time of year. Make sure you rest when you need to and you'll be fine.

I went to new York around 6 weeks too for work. Was roasting hot and was tired and worked about 10 blocks from the hotel so was a nice walk normally. Was all fine apart from hiding mild nausea and explaining no alcohol etc to colleagues. Just rest if you need it. Will be great!

I went for a conference in the throws of hideous morning sickness and tiredness. I’ve been to NYC before and have been known to rack up 16miles walking in one day sight seeing.

This time however, cabs, the metro and 24 eateries were my saviour. I found walking more than about 6 blocks too much. I got food delivered to my hotel when I did fancy eating (rather than boring room service) and kept snacks on me at all times as someone else had said.

I loved the Wholefoods buffet section as it meant I could chose and try a variety of things as I didn’t know what would make me feel sick each day!

As for jet lag, luckily the tiredness meant it was the least jet lagged I’d been as I wanted to sleep all the time anyway. I had to pop back for naps each day too!

Make a list of what you want to do and then check out metro routes and just hop in cabs if needed. It will be wonderful regardless, New York has such an incredible energy it will help get you through!

You will be fine and don't dread it. I was in the US when I was 7 weeks and didn't even know it. It was a work trip and I did 3 cities in 6 days... I found the jetlag harder to recover from but other than that you will be fine...sleep when u need to. Enjoy it

I was in New York at 16 weeks and had been sick up until 14 weeks so was definitely worried but it was fine.

My advice would be to take snacks with you for the plane and walk around as much as you can. Drink loads of water too and same goes for when you get there.

Don't feel like you need to rush out in the morning as quickly as possible. Sleep in a bit and plan your day ahead of time. Don't be tempted to walk everywhere, it's very easy to do and end up being exhausted. Take cabs and subway where you can.

Take plenty of breaks in coffee shops throughout the day to grab a snack and you should be fine. I had as good a time this year as I had when I wasn't pregnant so don't panic.
