Thinking ahead here, we are in the north east and bang inbetween Durham and the QE. Does anyone have any experience of either hospitals/maternity units?

Im from south shields, however baby came 5 weeks early (new years eve!!) And there was no room in SCBU for her, so we got transfered to QE. Although an awkward hospital to get to (me and OH dont drive so are reliant on lifts) its amazing.
I know i didnt give birth here, but the aftercare ive gotten is top notch! Even in the pregnancy assesment unit (where i got my post natal check) they were so lovely, and the midwives are so friendly!!

Thanks @captainshortie. I’m leaning toward the QE as have heard some bad stories about Durham and didn’t have the best experience in their a&e with ds

My husbands family is from around Gateshead and have had a lot of births at the QE. All have had really positive experiences including a few where the babies needed additional support etc.

I gave birth to both DC at the QE and had a great experience both times. Both pregnancies were high risk and we were well looked after throughout pregnancy and birth. Also they have the added bonus of private rooms where your partner can stay (if available). I would recommend it for sureSmile

I've had experience (non maternity) of both and I far prefer the QE, so we've chosen to go there for maternity care - even though it is slightly further away from home. I've been there for scans and for reduced movement checks and so far the care weve recieved has been amazing - so I'm happy with my choice! :)

Ime of all - South Shields is the best.

Not in U.K. now but had my first in Sunderland and second in Durham. Sunderland was good as you get your own suite the whole time from labour to when you leave. Midwives were ok but were really awful about feeding. Second at Durham - midwives fantastic but after delivery was put on a a ward which I didn't like. My friends have delivered at the QE and haven't heard anything bad about it

Thanks guys, think we will go with the QE. We have only been up north for two years so it’s dofficult when you don’t have a lot of first hand experience with the hospitals

I had my daughter at the QE 4 years ago and am due to give birth there in hopefully around 6 weeks. My experience there was amazing, midwife never left our side from getting into the delivery suite until we were settled in a room, she even ran me the most amazing bath after I gave birth. Antenatal care is outstanding too

PotteringAlong · 03/01/2019 22:09

I’ve had all 3 of my children at the QE; 3 very different births but cannot fault the maternity care or the antenatal care. I’m definitely not having any more children, but if I was there is nowhere else I’d go.

I’ve worked for both trusts ( not midwife but nurse in female health) QE hands down for me, Durham is good but QE is very highly rated for maternity services not sure about now but when I had first DS in 2015 it was no 2 in the UK for maternity, if your planning on breastfeeding Sunderland has a fantastic breast feeding support team and they were great for both my pregnancies but the support after was fantastic, home visits daily if I wanted them, and specialist midwife who cuts tongue ties, i waited one week to get both my babies ties cut which considering that majority of patients have to wait 4/6 months is amazing!
