Abberant right subclavian found ultrasound, any experience of this?

Hey,

So I had my anomaly scan yesterday and they found that our little girl has an aberrant right subclavian artery. This can have no affect on life if the child but as it’s more likely to occour in those with Down’s syndrome, it increased the risk of chromone 21. I just wanted to know if anyone else had experience of this being the only defect that their baby had as there were no other defects seen on the scan and everything else had grown normally. Previously my risk was 1 In 7000 odd and now it’s 1 in 1812 (which I’m aware is still very low risk). I guess I just want to find someone who has lived through it and how it turned out as also I’m not sure what to do. The consultant said because my risk is so low they wouldn’t pay for a harmony test (so I would have to get it privately for around £500) and of course the Amniocentesis comes with the 1% risk of miscarriage. She said it was probably more likely I could lose a healthy normal baby than find out a positive result from Amniocentesis. So what to do next? Is it really a risk on its own or should we investigate a bit further. Just feel a little anxious as wasn’t expecting this.

Thanks!

Hi CinaE,

I had this diagnosis with my first during the anomaly scan. We spent a week agonizing about what to do and really googling all scientific papers we could about this. In the end we concluded that the risk was still very low and that we would just sit tight. But the hospital offered us another scan with the fetal cardiology (I think thats what it was called) department with the senior most consultant there. There we three or four consultants present at that scan and they all agreed that the original finding was wrong. Have you had multiple scans to confirm this diagnosis? I didn't know about the option of a harmony test back then and if the second scan had confirmed the finding I would most likely have gone for that privately, just for peace of mind for the rest of the pregnancy.

Yeah I’ve been booked for another scan in 4 weeks just a bit anxious. The doctor did get confirmation from the consultant that this was the case. I guess I’ll see what happens and continue to mull over the harmony test
