Pelvic girdle pain symptoms

This morning (I'm 27 weeks) I was diagnosed with PGP by the hospital midwife and am waiting for referral to physio. I have spent today reading up on PGP but I am now not convinced that this is the problem. The NHS website suggests PGP causes pain in the hips, thighs, over the public bone, lower back or perineum.

What I am getting is severe stitch-like pain across my lower bump which is brought on by walking (sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after only 30 seconds) that is so agonising I am completely stopped in my tracks and can't take a step further. It is also painful to pick things up or move in any way that utilises my stomach muscles.

I did explain the above to the midwife and she said the symptoms ARE caused by pelvic girdle pain. She also pressed on my pelvic bone and that was sore. However, I'm just a bit confused as to why my symptoms seem so different to all explanations of PGP I am reading. Has anyone else experienced PGP and could tell me what their symptoms were like, or if they've experienced pain similar to mine above?

I'm feeling quite down about the prospect of 3 more months with this so knowing what I have will help me prepare for what's ahead!

Hi, I've had this since week 19 ish, getting progressively worse (sorry to say!!). I have intense pain under my bump, through my groin and inner thighs. My butt is in a constant clench trying to hold onto my hip bones so that also becomes incredibly painful. For me it's made worse by walking and walking up stairs, but for some women I think they feel it when they open their legs. From about week 29 I also started to feel it through my back. So basically my entire hip region is just agony.

The physio will give you some exercises and a support belt to stabalise your hips a bit when you walk but this didn't really help me at all. I just have to take it easy to be honest and accept that I can't walk any distances.

I think everyone experiences it slightly differently and it can be hard to tell where the pain is coming from as the pelvis and hip region are so complex with joints, ligaments, muscles etc.

Good luck, I know how awful it is!!

Sounds like round ligament pain, I had it really bad in my last pregnancy and I've got it again in this one.

I got it when lying down, or trying to turn while lying down, standing after sitting for some time and walking also brought it on.

I totally sympathise with you! I had PGP as well. My round ligament pain started quite early, around 8 weeks and PGP around 16 weeks. But it's different for everyone.

I recommend support belts, they helped for me, and holding my bump when I turned in bed and stood up sometimes helped. It's still worth going to physio tho, they will be able to give you advice on your specific symptoms.

Unfortunately it never went away until I gave birth.
