Telling my new boss I'm pregnant

So I started my new job in the NHS 2 weeks ago. I've known I've been pregnant for 5 weeks but I haven't told my new boss yet as we wasn't sure how far gone I was.
We went for our first scan on NYE and found out we're 13 weeks, so now I know should I tell my boss or should I wait until I have signed my contract of employment?? (They still haven't got it and I haven't signed anything)
I just really want to tell her so she knows as early as possible but if I haven't signed my contract, are they able to dismiss me or will I lose my job?

Thanks x

No they aren't allowed to dismiss you. I'd tell her as soon as possible.
Congratulations :)

peachypetite · 02/01/2019 07:31

I'd probably wait to sign the contract

W0MANlikeME · 02/01/2019 07:36

I would wait

I think its either 20 or 25 weeks when you HAVE to tell an employer

DannyWallace · 02/01/2019 07:37

I was in the exact same position as you (I'm now 30 weeks though).
I told my boss straight after my scan due to the line of work. Everyone was great. I would tell them ASAP x

You don't legally have to tell your boss until 25 weeks but dismissal because of pregnancy can cause them many major issues. If I were you I wouldn't share yet but depends when your likely to get contract x

I feel in an awkward position too I only started my job in November and am 5 weeks so it’s already giving me anxiety about having to tell them

W0MANlikeME · 02/01/2019 13:51

msd i am in similar situation. Planning on not telling until after 12 week scan. Hopefully i dont show before then as this is dc5

SenoraSurf · 02/01/2019 15:12

I personally would wait till you have signed your contract. They can't get rid of you due to pregnancy but they can use another reason to get rid of you- best to stay on the side of caution.
I know how you feel somewhat, and I do sympathise. I started my job in September and am now 9 weeks. Dreading telling my boss and any comments from my (mostly aspergic) colleagues!!!

Good luck OP and congrats x

I was in a similar situation with my job.
My mum was a HR manager and told me not to tell them until you've signed the contract.
They can't dismiss you over it, but she said they'd often rather not be told beforehand, as it puts them in a tricky legal situation if they have to withdraw the offer for some other reason.

Msd2416 · 02/01/2019 15:21

Is this the same with a probation period as mine is 3 months so will be before my 12 week scan anyway hopefully but if it’s delayed I’ll just have to hold off telling them

Yakultcat · 02/01/2019 17:30

I'm in the same situation and it's comforting to know I'm not the only one as I'm freaking out about telling my new manager. Has anyone any experience of telling thier new employer they're pregnant? How did it go down?

chiatta · 02/01/2019 19:15

Am also in same position. Haven’t started new job yet as NHS takes ages with paperwork.

GinUnicorn · 02/01/2019 19:20

I waited until 25 weeks (I had a pay review due so wanted to negotiate first) worked well for me but whatever happens they can’t discriminate due to pregnancy. Congratulations

GinUnicorn · 02/01/2019 19:20

Sorry cut to early!

Congratulations on your pregnancy

emma911030 · 02/01/2019 20:13

I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant before I started my job in the NHS (now 33 weeks) I emailed my new ward sister to make her aware as I needed a day off during my training week for my booking in appointment. It is illegal for them to retract any offer in employment because you are pregnant which is why I was only worried about it being a pain for them with me starting and then having to find cover for my mat leave.
I would tell them ASAP as they will appreciate as much time as possible.
Now 33 weeks I have been struggling with work so although due to start my mat leave at 36 weeks I've just been signed off for the rest of my working time so I'm a bigger pain in the bum really as I've left 4 weeks earlier than I was originally going to.
Also, congratulations! 😁 x

snoopy18 · 02/01/2019 20:16

Hold off until you have to tell them - They can still discriminate regardless of whether it’s right or wrong there’s no proof of anything should they change their mind on the contract after finding out. Look out for number 1!

Winona1 · 02/01/2019 21:05

Hi OP, I'm not sure it will make any difference as I'm sure you have to be in employment for 6 wks before conception in order to be entitled to any mat pay. X

Mumsy89 · 02/01/2019 22:00

I was in the same position and told my new boss two weeks ago ( only started job in November) they were perfectly fine with it and I also work in the public sector. I would wait to sign your contract but once that's done let them know, at least as soon as they know if you are ill for any reason due to baby then you can't be discriminated against or disciplined (also currently off for 3 days due to pregnancy related complications and again, they were perfectly fine with it) it's scary in the lead up to telling them but once you have it'll be a weight lifted. Congrats too on your pregnancy Smile xx

Hi ladies!

So I decided to tell my employer as my bump is starting to form now!!!

She was so lovely and understanding about the situation, I was worrying over nothing!!
She congratulated me and even printed me out some useful forms and made me a little pregnancy pack!!

Good luck to the others in here who are in the same situation, you have nothing to be worried about!!

Xx
