Gestational Diabetes

I'm 29 weeks pregnant & had a GTT today. Apparently one of my bloods came back high, so I'm being referred to a consultant who specialises in gestational diabetes; my appointment is next week.
I'm a bit panicked about what this means for my baby and me - does anyone have any experience in this?
Also, I'm not really sure what I should be doing diet wise until my appointment - do I just try to avoid all sugary drinks/food until I speak to the consultant? Obviously I just want to do the best for my baby, but feeling a bit lost at the moment!
Thanks!

Try not to panicking too much. There's another thread here which might help you.

Also have a look at www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk the diet advice on there really works well and isn't really what the NHS dieticians advise.

This is perfect @Si1ver , thank you so much!

I have GD too, I just stopped using sugar in anything.

Also only basmati rice and not too much of it, wholemeal bread not white or brown, no pasta and watch very carefully of my general carb in take I’ve cut potatoes out too substitute sweet potatoes instead.

You’re first appt you will most likely get a blood monitor and a diary to record your blood results. I have to take mine three times a day, before each meal one day and an hour after each meal the next.

I’ve also cut down my portions and try and go for walks or exercise after I’ve eaten to burn off excess sugar.

I also have additional growth scans but baby seems fine and is growing according to the normal curve (thankfully).

I’ve joined the Facebook group linked to the website pp linked to which has been great.

A friend sent me diabetic chocolates and biscuits which help when I get sugar cravings.

It’s an annoying condition but I’m so very greatful it’s only temporary (hopefully).

You’ll be fine, make a list of questions you might have for your consultant and also do take a look at the linked website.

That's really helpful @frazzledasarock , thank you! I was convinced I didn't have it as I've felt great throughout the pregnancy & didn't have any symptoms, so I feel like I'm in shock a bit! But just goes to show that having no symptoms doesn't always mean nothings going on!
So glad to hear your little one is growing well 💕

Hi!

Currently 34 weeks, was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks after my GTT.

The Facebook group Gestational Diabetes UK Mums has been my saviour as have the lovely ladies on here. You may find that the advice you receive from the NHS is quite outdated and doesn't actually help you control the diabetes very well, however the gestational diabetes website linked above has worked a treat for me so far and allowed me to remain diet controlled rather than medicated at the moment.

Eating-wise stick to long lasting carbs (a little at each meal if your sugars allow when you get your monitor), mixed with plenty of protein and fat for now. 3 meals and 3 snacks a day to help keep sugars stable too.
