Pregnancy date and scan?

Hi, my ex partner has PCOS and very irregular periods. She went for a check up yesterday due to stomach pains and was told she was pregnant. She was then sent for a scan where she was initially told she was 6 weeks pregnant. The tech then did an internal scan and said she was actually 7w1d. We last slept together unprotected on 18th sept. She had some bleeding on sept 20th (not sure if this was period or implant bleeding and pain now). We then had protected sex on the 29th sept. That was the last time we slept together. She had since told me she slept with someone during November. How accurate are the scans especially as they changed by a week? Is it possible the baby could be mine even though it would then mean she would be 14 weeks pregnant? Is it possible for the weeks to be confused during the scan or for 14 week baby to be developing very slowly? Please help!

They are pretty accurate, within half a week or so either way
Definitely couldn't be 7 weeks out otherwise what would be the point of having the scan?

Bradjeff · 31/12/2018 12:52

Thank you for your reply. I was concerned as it changed over a week from the normal scan to internal scan? She was initially sent for the scan as she was having some pains and when they did urine check it showed up she was pregnant. She had no idea herself and hasn’t kept track of any dates of periods or ovulation etc. If they said she is 7w1d when did she likely conceive? I don’t understand the two week add on thing fullly especially as her periods are so irregular?

They can be slightly out but not 7 weeks out. There is a massive difference between a 7 week embryo and a 14 week foetus.

SoyDora · 31/12/2018 12:56

If she’s 7 weeks and 1 day it would mean she conceived somewhere around the 24th/25th November.

Angelmiracle · 31/12/2018 12:57

I'd be pretty sure baby was conceived in November going by 7+1. My scan is spot on with date of conception more so than last period. I also have PCOS. Implantation bleeding actually isn't very common.

Bradjeff · 31/12/2018 13:02

Thank you. Part of me was hoping there was a possibility some way that the baby could be mine. I know sometimes sperm can survive upto 5 days but I feel maybe the difference is too big? Could it be a slow developing baby or would it have caught up by now as its over 12 weeks since we last slept together?

OP posts:
SoyDora · 31/12/2018 13:04

unfortunately no, a healthy baby will not develop 7 weeks behind. It’s too big of a difference.

Celebelly · 31/12/2018 13:06

No way would it be that far out. Sorry :(

mortifiedmama · 31/12/2018 14:08

It's not your baby. Sorry.

Bradjeff · 31/12/2018 14:26

Thank you all. I think deep down I know its impossible to be mine and maybe just clutching at straws. Biologically I guess the dates are way too far apart unless there was something seriously wrong which wasn’t mentioned. The tech just said it had a good heart beat.

At 7 weeks the baby would measure about 1 cm so a few mm out can make a big difference in estimated age. By 14 weeks it will be nearly 9cm. There is no confusing 7 and 14 weeks.

Hiphopopotamous · 31/12/2018 16:10

What are you going to do OP knowing it's not yours?

Bradjeff · 31/12/2018 17:46

Thank you for your help. TBH I don’t really know what to think at the minute now. I guess I’m quite devastated and know that there is no way it’s mine and I was just hoping for a miracle but the dates could never line up. They’re too far apart and the growth would be too different.

For what it's worth, genetics don't make a Dad. It's possible to love a child that isn't biological yours, if reconciliation with your ex is your goal. If not, I wish you well and hope you find your path. It's never easy to make up and pregnancy complicates everything.

Bradjeff · 29/03/2019 13:25

Hi All,

So I have an update and am even more confused and now stressed than ever.
After the above dates issues my mind was somewhat put at ease and I accepted the fact that biologically the child could not be mine.
I now have further information which has confused the whole situation.
A second scan was had on 14th Feb which dated the baby at 14.3 days, again following on from the first and making it unlikely to be mine.
She went for her second trimester scan yesterday 28th March, she found out the gender and all other checks at this scan done. According to previous dates that should have put her at 20.3, however looking at their scan picture it states her as being 29 weeks 1 day.
How is this possible? That changes everything my two months and loves the dates back to when we last slept together. I have no idea what to think about all this at the minute again now. Has the tech just dated it wrong? Is such a change in dates possible? Has the baby had a growth spurt or were the first two scans wrong??
Please help!

Where on the scan does it say that it’s 29+1? I only ask because my scans have lots of details on them all which relate to the scanning machine settings and only one has details of edd and that is based on one measurement.

I would be very surprised if they were that far out on dates after the previous scans correlated on dates as the measurements are usually so accurate and used internationally to date pregnancies.

Bambamber · 29/03/2019 19:50

I would be quite surprised if the sonographer didn't mention something if the dates were really that different

INoahGuy · 29/03/2019 19:54

Did the sonographer confirm the due date?

Sessy19 · 29/03/2019 20:00

I hope the mother is not toying with you and confusing you. You poor thing. 9weeks is an impossible misjudgement with today’s technology. 4D scanning can see the facial features of a baby in utero....I would find it deeply suspicious to be told that my baby was actually due 9weeks later than ALL my other scans had placed dating.

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 29/03/2019 20:00

Generally whatever the baby is measured as being at the 12 week/dating scan, that is their gestational age. Early and later scans might show the baby as being behind or ahead but that just means they are small or big for their age. I don’t think you can think the latest scan is saying anything other than the baby is on the larger side of average.

After birth, you can arrange a DNA test if you wish to conclusively know.

kikibo · 29/03/2019 20:04

Even if it does say 29+1, the date on scans seems to be determined by the date they enter at the start (i.e. the date of last period), so if someone makes a typo, the machine calculates wrong. So I wouldn't take this seriously.
I know things work like this because my ob made a typo like that and then was surprised about the size of the baby haha. I still have the pic to prove it.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 29/03/2019 20:12

did the mother tell you the sonographer said she was 29+1 weeks pregnant?

How are you seeing the scan photo?

Bradjeff · 30/03/2019 12:36

Thanks for all you replies. She’s sent me pictures of all the scans, at my request so I’m still kept informed.
I am really hoping it is just a typo. Above the date it states last LMP as 5th Sept. I don’t know where the sonographer got this date from an I’m hoping that that is where this new Edd has arrived from?
Are babies measured and dated at each scan or is the scan at 12 weeks the official date?
This was the scheduled 20th week scan where I’m guessing they did certain checks - I’m not particularly clued up on each of the scans and what occurs.

The 12 week scan date is the official ones and remains so throughout. It is used to show whether the baby is small or big for their gestational age as otherwise every scan would redate and the baby would always show as an average size and the due date would change.

About someone else’s pregnancy? This is your ex girlfriend and someone else’s baby, yes?
