Crohn's disease and pregnancy

Hi, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 10 years ago, am expecting my first (19 weeks) and have been prescribed steroids (Budesonide 9mg/day) by consultant as disease has flared up since I got pregnant. I'm worried about effects of drugs on baby's development and also on how long it takes for the body to get rid of drugs once I stop treatment. I'd like to breastfeed when baby is born, but obstetrician and consultant can't guarantee milk will be 100% safe for the baby. I know breastfeeding is better for baby, but is it worth the risk? Anyone experienced something similar?

i know that breastfeeding can be better but babies can still thrive on formula, some people cant breast feed! i dont really know anything about this to help but i thought i would bump you to the top

I had a crohn's flare up in pregnancy too. I was prescribed asacol and have been breastfeeding my baby for 8 months now. Presume it is because of the steroids that you were told it is not 100% safe. Is it worth talking to your consultant about changing medication. My sympathies, it is the last thing you need when pregnant. (I gave birth to a 10 pound baby by the way!)

Ihanks for messages. About drugs, I've been told I can't change the medication and the only alternative would be surgery to remove part of the bowel. Which is something I cannot do until after the birth. Anyway, I guess the good old formula will have to do for my baby. Congratulations on the 10 pound baby. It's wncouraging to hear you can have a healthly baby with Crohn's.
