Hello,

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and have been having itchiness off and on most of my pregnancy. I know itchiness can be a sign off liver problems but the way I read it, this is a severe intense itching.

My itchiness is off and on, on average every other day. When I've got it, it's all over and can last for hours.

I've tried creams, oils, olatium... nothing is working for me. My sickness has been fluctuating too so not sure if it's all just hormones.

Anyone else had this and got any tips?

I had this, especially itchy legs. I found looser clothing helped but not much else. It stopped at about 24 weeks though so hopefully it will stop for you too x

Sorry, OP, I have no cure for your itchiness. However, I suggest you mention it to your midwife. When I was pregnant I had itchiness to my hands on and off over a few days, which I mentioned to my consultant. They checked my bloods straight away. Luckily nothing was wrong and it went away on its own.

Even if you think it’s nothing serious please do still let your midwife/hospital know - they can run some quick tests to make sure it’s nothing else.

I had this both times. Drove me mad!! And made me v grumpy

Blondebrunette1 · 29/12/2018 21:41

Sure it's not serious particularly at this stage in your pregnancy but a friend of mine had itching go ignored in third trimester and it was ICP and it ended the worst possible way. She campaign's for awareness so it always stays in my mind, get it checked out. Xx

Get it check - I had this and it was oc. Not serious but it doesn’t need monitoring and you can be prescribed something to help with the itching.

I had this and needed weekly bloods from.32 weeks which were thankfully fine.

If nothing else, my midwife prescribed a cream with menthol in it which worked wonders at calming the itch so I'd have a conversation with yours.

Yes get your bloods checked. Mine was the liver thing. I was prescribed anti histamine.

I had this around that stage, it was mostly on my torso and drove me insane, lying down was the worst! It passed after a few weeks.

Severe itching on your hands or feet needs to be checked out though.

Thanks everyone for your advise. I will call the docs just to be sure.

I don't have any itching on my hands and feet at all. It doesn't keep me awake at night so I'm just it would be classed as intense or anything. More annoying than anything.

Just an update to let you all know I switched from Bio Oil to cocoa butter and the itching has died down massively. Perhaps it was a reaction to that more than anything.

Aveeno helped me and Bepanthen nappy cream on really itchy bits. Think sometimes skin is just way more sensitive in pregnancy. Hot baths are drying my skin out too but it's also the only place I'm comfortable 😭

Get your GP or MW to do a blood test just in case it’s OC. I was unbearably itchy while pregnant, didn’t have OC because I was tested, it was just hormonal. It got so bad I was scratching till I bled, and lying awake at night crying because I was so tired but couldn’t sleep because of the itching. Nothing helped, it went away as soon as I gave birth.

Valkarie · 02/01/2019 13:23

Just ask for a blood test for ICP / OC. It's only going to take a couple of minutes and will either end in reassurance or necessary monitoring. I had it in two pregnancies, but without palms and soles itching, so would always advise getting checked.

Thanks for your messages. I spoke to midwife today and she's asked me to go in this afternoon. Will see what she says.
