Gaining too much in first trimester

I think I'm 9+4 based on ovulation date etc., though according to my early scan might actually be 10+2, and today after finally putting new batteries in my scales I found out I have gained 3.2kg/7lbs since I last weighed around 3 weeks. The only thing that eases my sickness is eating regularly and not moving too much. I know everyones pregnancy gain is different but my BMI before I got pregnant was only just within the healthy range so am a little bit scared of going above the recommended gains.

Did anyone have the same and was able to balance it out in the second trimester?

I feel your pain. When I got pregnant I was about a stone heavier than I would liked to have been - still a 'healthy' BMI but the upper end of 'healthy'.

I'm 18+4 with twins and ten days ago had gained 11lbs. The midwife thought it was slightly too much but my other consultant says not. Try your best to eat sensibly and keep as active as realistically possible and equally, try not to worry about your weight too much. It should soon come off after your baby is born.

Yes, I gained loads in first and second trimesters. Tailing off at 26 weeks. I have polyhydramnios though and have been enormous the whole way through. Although weight gain slowed months ago fundal height has continued to increase following the same curve. Baby is also big.

I gained LOADS in the first trimester and felt horrible. Then it slowed down a lot in the second trimester and ramped up again at the end but not to the same extent of first trimester.

Also surprisingly given my size for pregnancy I always measured perfectly and ended up with an under 8lb baby who was super healthy much to my surprise (I though she was gonna be ginormous and at least 9lbs!

All the best with the rest of your pregnancy :)

Yes, I gained SO much in the first trimester for the same reasons as you! Eating was the only thing that helped me feel better & it was not my usual (healthy) diet as I only wanted beige foods... & a lot of them.

Thankfully it has really tailed off in the second trimester - feeling better now & eating pretty much as normal. I'm 22+3 & haven't gained since 16 weeks (weighed myself yesterday.)

Try not to worry - I had a panic about it but what will be will be. It can all be sorted out after.

Thank you everyone. Glad to know others have had the same issue but that it hasn't caused too many issues.

It's mostly beige foods for me too @tinyradish, I have some lovely healthy batch cooked meals in the freezer but now just thinking about them turns my stomach. Sad

I think I was told extra piece of bread and a glass of milk a day was all the extra nutrition a baby required..
Very hard when you are nauseated.

I gained loads in the first trimester but it was all bloating/constipation - I looked about six months pregnant by twelve weeks! I was actually eating practically nothing because I just felt so bloated and uncomfortable. Ended up gaining 7kg in total, and was 1kg over my pre-pregnancy weight when I left hospital (I was pretty unwell and in hospital for my third trimester so didn’t gain much).

The amount you gain is really not linear. Make sure you keep moving (walking, gentle swimming/yoga), not for weight loss but because you will feel better for it, and don’t eat too much rubbish. You’ll be fine.

I gained loads in the first trimester with both DC1 and DC2 for the same reason. For me, it slowed down in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, due to me being able to eat healthly again, eating too much causing indigestion, and a little bit of deliberately trying to cut back on the cake people kept bringing into the office as I knew I'd gained too much already. I ended up with a noreal gain by the end of my pregnancy.

Triskaidekaphilia · 30/12/2018 12:22

@Weenurse when the sickness started I tried to tell doc all I could eat at the time was white carbs and butter and she shrugged it off saying don't worry if you can't eat, the baby will get what it needs and its better not to gain too much- she seemed to think I was worried about losing too much weight when I was more concerned about gaining it!

I don't see of any reason I can't get back to eating healthily and exercising if the sickness and exhaustion eases off. I need to buy more fruit because that's the only healthy thing I can probably stomach. I think I could stomach wholewheat or lentil pasta instead of white on the less bad days.
