Has anyone been too poorly to go to the first scan?

Awful nausea, haven't left the house for a month. My scan is on Wednesday and I'm so scared I'll have to postpone. Really need to go as this baby was conceived straight after a miscarriage so I'm not sure how far along I actually am, plus we have childcare in place (not easy with four DC) and DH has got the day off work to attend (it's his first child). But I feel so ill :(

If you are that sick lovely then go and see your GP. There are safe medications that you can take.

BirthdayKake · 28/12/2018 21:45

The GP didn't want to prescribe anything :( thanks though x

See a different GP. There are safe medications and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has guidelines on appropriate prescribing. You shouldn't have to suffer so much!

Highlowpo · 28/12/2018 22:48

I had severe sickness and vomitted through all 4 scans I had. You just have to go for yours and baby's wellbeing. If you're sick, you're sick. I know it's horrid.

Highlowpo · 28/12/2018 22:49

And yes I agree with others. Insist on medication if you're that sick.

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 28/12/2018 22:51

I agree with PP, your GP is an imbecile, I was medicated for HG in both pregnancies and all was well. I took chlorpromazine with the second baby as it was so bad, it really helped, do you think a man would let himself suffer with 9 months of nausea or vomiting?? Like hell he would!

VimFuego101 · 28/12/2018 22:55

I'm sure you wouldn't be the first pregnant woman to be so sick you had to bring a bucket with you. Hope it eases off soon and you find a more helpful dr who can prescribe you some meds.

I couldn’t make my 12 weeks nhs scan as I felt too nauseous (and that was with 3 medications!). My mw said scans are optional, you don’t have to have them. I ended out having a private scan at a facility much more local to me so the trip was quicker and easier. I made the appointment for a time that I was at my ‘best’. My mw is happy to use this measurement for dating purposes. I’m hoping I’m well enough to make my 20 week scan at the nhs hospital as there’s nowhere private locally that offers it. I think you can have dating scan up to 14 weeks so you could see another gp to get some medication and might start to feel a bit perkier in a couple of weeks to go if they rescheduled.

I totally sympathise, I have barely left the house aside from minimal medical appointments (had to get mw to come to me to do booking in as I couldn’t manage going out) since week 4 and am now 14 1/2 weeks. I think the mental effect this has on you is very underrated, it’s just awful.

Reastie · 29/12/2018 07:49

Ps, kake do I recognise you from hG thread? I can’t believe gp still won’t prescribe. You need to see another gp and take in the pg nausea and vomiting guidelines for treatment. You are entitled to medication for nausea. The first line I was prescribed is available otc as ‘avomine’.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 29/12/2018 07:53

Go and see a different GP. Are you booked in with a hospital / midwife yet? I'd talk to them too. There are medications that are safe, you need to be well enough to leave the house. Being this sick is not good for you either, the risk of dehydration is high and it will be very tricky to get the nutrients you need - not to mention the stress for you and your large family.

Or turn up at the hospital for the scan, throwing up, and tell them about your idiot GP and your 4dc at home. Someone will get help.

Princesspeachy0 · 29/12/2018 07:59

Oh I really feel for u.
For my 12 week scan I was so so poorly, I suffer with HG and it was a bad day.
I took my sickness bowl with me and just threw up while they were scanning me, every time I turned over to be sick the baby would flip around, they said it was like baby was on a ride.
It was awful being out the the house feeling so shit but it was nice seeing the baby was doing well.

I agree with the others, get yourself to another doctor or even A&E if you aren't able to keep enough fluids down.

NerrSnerr · 29/12/2018 08:04

I was sat in the waiting room with a carrier bag puking into it for all my scans. It was awful but the staff were great. I also agree, go back to a different GP for meds. I ended up having many different sickness medications Finding one that suits me,

wishingyouluck · 29/12/2018 08:09

Yep, I went to them all and somehow wasn't sick at any appointment. I was bed ridden at home for months with hyperemesis and sent to hospital for fluids etc. Just be prepared, but I think it's best to go to everything if you physically can!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 29/12/2018 08:33

I had to be wheeled to my first scan in a hospital wheelchair (that they have at the entrance) with a sick bowl in my lap, vomiting all the way to the scan room. Sad
I didn't care about the embarrassment factor at that point, I was so unwell.

The GP most certainly can prescribe something though, it's awful that there are still drs refusing women antiemetics.

BirthdayKake · 29/12/2018 09:14

Thank you everyone. Yes Reastie it's me :(

"Luckily" I'm not vomiting a lot (and less than when I was 8-10 weeks). The problem with the GP this time was that she checked my ketones. I KNEW they'd be fine because when I'm not pregnant, I hardly drink anything, but now I am, I'm constantly sipping water/squash to try to alleviate the nausea and horrible taste in my mouth. So basically she said that because I wasn't in ketosis, it was best to take nothing.

Some of these stories are horrendous :( sorry you've all had to go through this. I definitely agree that if men had to do this, they'd have found both the cause and cure by now!

There were quite a few women with sick bowls in the waiting room every time I went for a scan and as I was scanned frequently from 12wks to birth due to other medical complications I saw more than one woman puke. I don't know if your hospital does this but when we went for a scan I saw a midwife who did my bloods beforehand if so I'd mention to them about your awful nausea, how you are struggling and your gp not prescribing. I found the hospital were a lot more willing to sort things out than my admittedly rubbish GP.

BirthdayKake · 29/12/2018 09:47

Thanks wonky. I've never noticed anyone with a sick bowl and had a lot of scans. But I bet there were some women that had them and I was too preoccupied with my own life to be bothered by it! So hopefully no one will remember me if I'm sick 😂 I will be seeing the midwife after the scan too. Really hope I'm going to be at least 12 weeks so psychologically at least I can start to tell myself I'll be better soon although this didn't work with DD1

Kake do you have other gps at your practice? It’s not good practice to refuse medication if you’re not in ketosis, if it’s significantly affecting your quality of life they (which this is) they should be prescribing. If I were you I’d ring them up and ask what the lastest they can do 12 week scans at (they may say something like 14 weeks) and change your booking to a couple of weeks later as it might make all the difference to how you’re feeling and coping with the scan.

Firstbornunicorn · 30/12/2018 13:42

I had the same problem...GP wouldn't prescribe medication. I eventually asked to see a male GP as I knew he couldn't do the "when I was pregnant..." thing. I threw up in front of him (which was unexpected as by that stage I was only vomiting a couple of times per day, although the nausea was crippling), and he agreed to prescribe Cyclizine and Ondansetron.

I was also late for my first scan as I had to stop to be sick so many times. The midwife gave me a stash of kidney dishes, but I didn't have anything left to vomit, and she let me lie on the couch the entire time as moving induced vomiting.
She was a total disaster of a midwife otherwise, but I appreciated that!

beanhunter · 30/12/2018 19:37

I also have HG. I had my first scan whilst vomiting and attached to iv fluids. Was grim. You sound like you need a proper medical review.
