Outside in socks

So I was outside in the garden with my pup making sure she understood her new Christmas treat ball, on the stone patio with no shoes on but socks, my mother in law comes outside and shouts at me that I should have something on my feet or I'll get a chill in my stomach! Is this an old wives tale thing or cos I could catch a cold? ( I live in England so its cold here but I'm warm from all my other layers)

I always go into the garden in socks or bare feet. Never made me ill.

CarrieBlu · 28/12/2018 11:56

It’s fine, she’s being ridiculous.

CarrieBlu · 28/12/2018 11:56

Also, you can’t catch a cold from being cold.

mumofmunchkin · 28/12/2018 11:56

I do this all the time and have never got ill from it. My MIL is the type that would (and has) shout that I’m going to get pneumonia because of it though, or because I’ve stepped outside the front door with wet hair.

TokyoSushi · 28/12/2018 12:00

Ridiculous

SundayLove · 28/12/2018 12:36

It makes me laugh because she has stone floor and a colder house than outside! Mum of munchkin my MIL is the same about the wet hair yet she thinks all the NHS restrictions are nonsense haha. And I caught their family cold recently and she didn't bat an eye! That's what made me think it could be an old wives tale

What?!

That is the craziest thing I’ve read today. I very rarely wear shoes. I did 9 months of putting the bins out barefoot, regardless of the weather.

Bump will be fine (obviously) - your MIL may need help though! Xmas Grin

CarrieBlu · 28/12/2018 15:09

I go outside with wet hair everyday as I leave it to dry naturally. Even when it’s freezing temperatures. Nothing dreadful has happened to me.

SoyDora · 28/12/2018 16:17

Grin do you think walking outside in bare feet could cause a ‘chill in your stomach’? Does it sound remotely plausible??

SundayLove · 28/12/2018 19:24

Me and my DH are still laughing at her saying "catch a chill in your stomach"

I heard stuff like that a lot travelling around Eastern Europe a while back (either in the stomach or in the kidneys!). I think it might be one of those cultural superstitions. Makes no sense to me!

whatswithtodaytoday · 28/12/2018 20:08

A cold is a virus, you can't get a cold from being cold (or having cold feet).

I rarely wear shoes in the garden - in fact have just put the bin out in socks. If it weren't winter I'd have bare feet!

A chill and a cold are two different things.

I would normally be with you on this, however, as a teenager (I'm 42 now) the doctor diagnosed a chill on my kidneys from walking around our old stone floored cottage without slippers.

I suppose in the olden days these things were more serious than hey are now, hence the older generations being more careful. Caught in the rain for any length of time used to be a real problem and a chill often led to more serious problems.

I don't think being in the garden barefoot in this day and age would cause you a problem though!
