I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and for the last week or so I have been waking up at 3am every morning wide awake and can’t go back to sleep, even when I have finished night shift and only had 2 hours sleep when I get home I still wake up at 3am in the morning.
Dose this happen to anyone else? And why is this happening I miss my sleep at night

Yep. 35 weeks now and getting worse! It did ease up in the second trimester though.

lenasibbs · 28/12/2018 04:02

What makes us stop sleeping? X

I firmly believe it's preparation for no sleep when baby arrives!

Butteredghost · 28/12/2018 05:40

Oh you poor thing, it's awful isn't it. I couldn't sleep during my entire pregnancy. On the plus side I can say my days with a new born were extremely easy, sleep filled and restful by comparison.

GeorgeBailey2 · 28/12/2018 05:43

I had the opposite problem- I guess it shows how many different ways we are effected by pregnancy!
What time have you been going to bed OP? Are you feeling tired?

Denira · 28/12/2018 05:48

I had the same problem. Now have a nearly 10 week old and get even less...

SuperVeggie · 28/12/2018 06:10

Yep I’m awake! But nearly 36 weeks now. I slept like a log until about 24 weeks and then started getting leg cramps waking me up every day from about 3am. Now I still get those but also get bad back, painful hips, night sweats... oh and baby sometimes keeps me awake when she decides to have a dance party at 4am! The fun continues!

lenasibbs · 28/12/2018 06:21

I think I wouldn’t mind been awake if it was for morning sickness or something but been awake at that time is horrible, I normally go to bed about 10pm if I last that long but when I stay awake after night shift till the night I was hoping I would sleep threw the night, I even went on my break this morning at 1.30 and I woke at 3am 🤣 guess it’s good practice for when the baby arrives x

I don't think I've had a full night since taking my pregnancy test. I am now 33 weeks and used to being up at 4 which I think is good training for things to come.
It's hard but you just have to try and rest and sleep when you can, even if it's a midday nap. Even though I'll be up with the baby, I'm looking forward to not having to keep hobbling to the toilet with hip pain!

rabbitfoodadvocate · 28/12/2018 06:56

I had this too! I agree it's nature's way of preparing us for the night feeds etc.

I'm 23 weeks now and getting better sleep but I'm ready for it to start tailing off as I get more uncomfy!

lenasibbs · 28/12/2018 07:48

No one told me this, I wish they would of I would of been a little prepared but I don’t mind really I just feel at a loss at that time of morning trying to be quiet but have something to do at the same time x

It used to annoy me too @lenasibbs but now I read a book, stick on a box set, have a cup of tea or a bath. Basically the things I will shortly not have time for! Enjoy the freedom and quiet even if it is at 4am Smile

SoyDora · 28/12/2018 08:27

Yes, 40 weeks and have been up since 3.30am. So tired.

GroundhogWeek · 28/12/2018 08:30

Was just coming on to start a similar thread! 33 weeks now and I seem to be able to sleep like a log until about 3am but then that’s it. So tired but cannot get back to sleep whatever I do. Vaguely remember it happening at about this stage of my first pregnancy, so frustrating.

secretuser · 28/12/2018 08:49

Same here! I'm 26 weeks with number 2 and I was exactly the same with number 1. I think it's the hormones that do something to our sleep, I'm not a heavy sleeper at the best of times but during pregnancy I'm horrific!

lenasibbs · 28/12/2018 08:52

@tinymarie I think I will start reading a book while I have the time actually that’s a good idea 🙂

Is there anything else that happens that people don’t mention lol x

Hang in there, I genuinely found my third trimester insomnia way worse than being sleepless with my newborn. At least post partum I knew I was awake for a reason, I could lie however I wanted and I didn’t need a wee absolutely all the time!

teejayem · 28/12/2018 09:08

12 weeks here and I already have a 3yo who gets up most nights and comes in bed with us, which is fine but I am struggling to get back to sleep after he has woken me up.
Last night I ended up on tripadvisor looking st reviews of fantasy holidays in the Maldives I'm going to book after my fantasy lottery win Grin. When I was pregnant with aforementioned 3yo DS I spent a LOT of time on MN and eBay. It sucks because I am still suffering with the early pregnancy fatigue so I get to 2pm and I'm shattered, but if I nap then, I can't sleep. I'm just not looking forward to the late insomnia, I had appalling SPD with DS and woke up every time
I needed to roll over. Not. Much. Fun.

Sarge17 · 28/12/2018 09:40

23 weeks and leg cramps kicked in this week 😱

Stormwhale · 28/12/2018 09:46

I'm 17 weeks and although it's better than it was in the first trimester, my sleep is still very broken, waking lots through the night. I just carry on as usual during the day as much as I can, then every week or so I have a day where I'm completely shattered and sleep a lot in the day. Yesterday was one of those days after the hectic Christmas we had, and I slept from 12.30 til 16.30. I feel much better today!

jq28 · 28/12/2018 10:07

I'm 10 weeks and have been waking for about 4 wees a night and wide awake around 2am for an hour for about 4 weeks now. It's draining but suppose it's a sign of things to come

Reastie · 28/12/2018 11:04

Yes, I’m 14 weeks and last night was the best nights sleep I e had in 2 months as I only woke up 3 times! I was the same all the way through with dd too. All I can suggest is I listen to talk radio in bed to keep me company when I can’t sleep and have a book to read too. Honest guys on you tube do fantastic meditations which I listen to through headphones. They have special sleep ones which although may not 100% send me to sleep every time I do just find incredibly relaxing and calming.

emma0619 · 29/12/2018 01:17

I find I can sleep better during the day like cat naps but when night time comes I can't switch off
I think it's pregnancy and hormones, excitement, nerves that just make us stay awake in nearly 9 weeks now and I've had the same issue for a few weeks however I find ginger and lemon tea and biscuits make me sleepy
