Holiday after 1st baby is born

Hi all

I am looking at booking a holiday end of sept / early Oct when our first baby should be about 4-5 months old. Have found lots of threads about travelling with a baby at that age but none about how a first time mum may feel about going on holiday that soon after birth. Should I wait to book last minuet and see how I’m going or book it up and hope for best? Medically speaking I’m having an straight forward pregnancy so no foreseen issues. Be good to here some experiences.

Thank you :)

I'd wait to book. I was happy traveling and was breastfeeding so it was easy BUT I didn't fit in to any holiday clothes, was knackered and baby slept really really badly so I wouldn't have relaxed in a hotel worrying about keeping other holiday makers up.

We ended up getting a cottage in the UK with a hot tub and having a really great time. I think if we'd have been abroad in a hotel I wouldn't have been so relaxed and I felt really uncomfortable in my own skin.

Thank you! Yes didn’t think about the not fitting in clothes etc. Won’t be able to afford a new wardrobe & holiday! May save the hot holiday for he following year. Thanks for getting back to me.

I would - although go somewhere where you have your own kitchen etc so it makes preparing baby milk (if you are bottle feeding) much easier. We travelled twice with dd (at 6 weeks and then 10 weeks and to be honest it was dead easy as they don't move - an 18 month old is much harder work.

I took my first abroad at 10 weeks and then again at 13 weeks and had a great time.

I did struggle with the clothing thing a bit as felt horrible in everything, but I felt the same at home so think the benefits outweighed the negatives.

We also went away at 8 months, 10 months and just over a year and in some ways a holiday with a tiny baby is so much easier!

I already have a holiday booked for next year when I’ll have a 2 yr old and another of about 12 weeks.

I think if breastfeeding it’s eadier, but it’s a nightmare formula feeding on holiday. The faff of sterilising bottles, worrying about the water quality/ safety and transporting that much formula if using ready made. Also some flights have funny rules about taking ready made in hand luggage. If you buy formula on holiday it’s another job to do or think about and you might not be able to get the same brand.

I would recommend centre parcs or somewhere close and family friendly like Ibiza out of season (we did this when DD was 8 months and found an English shop selling ready made cow and gate).

I personally would wait and see how you feel if it’s first baby. It’s doable but depends how you are recovering mentally as well as physically.

Good luck and congratulations

Don't do a hot holiday with a mobile baby. You'll be chasing after them in the heat and worrying about the pool. Much more stressful than a younger one.
Get cancellation insurance before you book in case something comes up or you can't go for what ever reason, then book.

Bojangles33 · 27/12/2018 10:39

I thought I would be able to do it but then breastfeeding didn't work out and there is so much STUFF. We hadn't booked anything so ended up going to a luxury log cabin thing with hot tub, it was amazing and absolutely what we needed. I'd just wait and book it last minute when you know how you feel.

Go for it. I really enjoyed getting away for some sunshine and DS loved splashing in a baby pool.

We took the big bottles of pre made formula and once opened stored in mini bar (hotel) or fridge (apartment). If you're in an apartment we took microwave steriliser bags (very easy) and in the hotel we just packed our usual steam steriliser incase there wasn't a microwave in the dining area (there always has been).

At that time of year if you find somewhere with an indoor pool that would be ideal as it gives you something to do even if the outdoor pool is chilly.

Clothes - Holiday with DC1 is actually what got me going to the gym prop

Ds2 pressed post Hmm

Holiday with DS1 got me to the gym properly as I felt uncomfortable for the first time. I love it though and it meant I got back in shape easily after DS2 so every cloud! I just bought a few cheap bits from primark and told myself that no one else cared and that I'd just had a baby.

Gosh, definitely go. It is lovely to be in the warmer weather - no faffing around putting on lots of layers on the baby and you can float around in forgiving kaftan-y things which is great Grin. Would definitely get a villa or cottage if you can though - kitchen facilities a must and being able to totally set your own routine is the best.

Go for it!

Thank you everyone for your kind replies! Food for thought that’s for sure. We will definetly go for it but maybe book a month before we go to see how things are going. Thanks again x
