What did you use for your newborn?

We have bought a Chico Next 2 Me crib, which comes with a mattress but needs something to cover baby/put him in.

TIA.

I've bought a sleeping bag similar to a GroBag (from Matalan).

Just be aware that the majority of them say not to use until baby is over 8lbs 10 (or at least will not slip down into the bag). So I've got a blanket on our side sleeper cot for the first couple of weeks, just in case although they're predicticting we'll have a 10lb baby.

LeeCee · 27/12/2018 09:44

I got the gro snug which is suitable from newborn and you can swaddle arms if that helps baby sleep. Got big standard sleeping bags from H&M for when DD1 is bigger.

jomaIone · 27/12/2018 09:50

Also used a grosnug until baby was 3 months, then bought sleeping bags from tk maxx. Best things ever. There's a good guide in the Group website about how to dress baby in different temps in their sleeping bags. I mostly used 2.5 tog apart from in the height of the heatwave this year.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 27/12/2018 09:50

We used blankets for the first few nights which were a nightmare as dd just uncovered herself each and every time she did the “newborn curl”.

Moved to sleeping bags which were a game changer- I’d got 2 in the M&S sales. She still uses sleeping bags now at 14 months as she’s such a wriggler and they’re great, especially in the cold weather.

For dc2 I’ve bought a gro-snug which swaddles the arms that a pp meantioned, then he’ll move into a sleeping bag.

TerriB84 · 27/12/2018 10:51

Another one here that used grosnugs. I loved them and my daughter stayed in hers until around 3months ish when we moved her to bigger sleeping bags. She’ll be 2 next month and still uses a sleeping bag now! Once out of the gro snug I really recommend a brand called babasac. It has zip out panels so it’s a 1tog and 2.5tog in one so you don’t need to buy separate lightweight summer bags

Sarge17 · 27/12/2018 11:08

Thank you everyone, we will look at the GroSnugs. How many did you have? Will two be enough? Thank you again.

I have got a growsnug for newborns and also have a few questions - baby due within the next few weeks so anticipating it will be quite cold - for newborns does the baby wear a sleep suit under the growsnug? And do you need a blanket over the top?
I bought the ‘cosy’ growsnug rather than the ‘light’, Can’t seem to find tog measurement on the newborn ones.

Heyha · 27/12/2018 21:05

The little room thermometer you get with a grosnug has a guide to what they should be wearing with it on the back, they will need something on but depends on the room temp, but this card lays it all out.

I think the point of the bags is that you don't need blankets as well so make them a safe sleeping option, but hopefully someone more experienced will come along and confirm as mine are still in the packaging Wink

MynameisJune · 27/12/2018 21:08

We used the grosnug too until around 3/4 months. Then we moved into the Jojo snuggle suit as DD hates her legs being covered by blankets/sleeping bag.

DD was a deep winter baby, she wore a vest and a sleepsuit under the grosnug but our room was 12/13 degrees C so quite cold.

IWannaBeYourFordCortina · 27/12/2018 21:13

I had these for my DD

I really liked them. Both my DCs were summer babies though and they are very lightweight. You would probably need to add a couple of layers in the winter.

PBobs · 27/12/2018 21:15

I've bought merino 3 season sleep bags. Baby will sleep mostly naked the first 2 months - except nappy and vest as we'll be in a hot place. They'll be perfect size for bag when needed.

LittleDoveLove · 27/12/2018 22:51

I have a gro snug and a grobag (Asda alternative). I'm not due until spring so will get another one or two when I know if he's going to be big or not at my growth scan a month before probably. They have some good offers on them at the moment - they can be pricey particularly the ones by Gro

User12879923378 · 28/12/2018 00:07

We swaddled as that was what they did in the hospital. Tried the Grosnugs but she absolutely hated them. She went into sleeping bags around 3 months, as she had started fighting her way out of the blankets. No idea how many you will need - she's never been a vommer and wasn't a poonamist until this week send help so we never needed to change a bag at night, but we have a selection of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.5 tog bags.

Thetigerwhocameto · 28/12/2018 00:09

Another point with the grosnug, they can only be used once baby is 5lb, so useless with most prem babies if you find yourself in that situation, we swaddled until DD was big enough, then grosnug and now grobag. Our dd is such a wriggler we really couldn’t use blankets as she would never still be covered!!

Eh1112 · 28/12/2018 01:33

We had three Cosy Grosnugs (December baby) as little one was sick after most feeds. We moved on to the Jojo sleep sack with arms (removed arms to start with) at about 3/4 months old when she outgrow the Snug.

CharleeFarley · 28/12/2018 01:41

Grosnug or Velcro-type swaddling blanket, with simple onesie underneath. Both of these are good because you can change the baby without having to unswaddle their top half. Our basement is around 18C at night, so I also added 1-2 blankets for extra warmth. Baby couldn't slip down/kick blankets off due to being swaddled. ☺️

I have three kids, used roughly the same set up for all. Then into a sleeping bag at 2-3 months. I had big babies 9, 10 and 10'8 lbs.

@Sarge17
Boots have some half price at the moment if you are planning on buying some

TinyMarie · 28/12/2018 07:08

I'm intending to swaddle and bought a couple of Grosnugs until she's big enough for a GroBag.
I'm hoping she won't hate it!

MustStopSnacking28 · 28/12/2018 08:41

We had two grosnugs and found them to be a game changer - ds started sleeping for more like 3-4 hours at a time instead of 30 mins 😳 two was enough but that was during the heatwave so they dried super quickly. Maybe 3-4 might be better now in case they get through more than one in a night!

Sarge17 · 28/12/2018 09:37

Thank you everyone Smile

Thank you, Username, I always forget to look at Boots!

Mothercare have the light ones in the sale too! (Boots are just cosy). Have now bought 3 GroSnugs to hopefully get us started.

Thank you everyone.

Nothisispatrick · 02/01/2019 10:16

We used grosnugs until DD was three months, then sleeping bags we got from mothercare. She had two grosnugs which were alternated when she sicked on them.
