Has anyone asked to be induced?

Hi

I’m almost 36 weeks pregnant, baby is measuring huge on all 6 scans we have had - I have the most awful SPD have spent most of today on the verge of tears. Not sure I can continue for another 4 weeks, has anyone asked to be induced in a similar situation? (No other health concerns but midwife did say I would need to be in labour ward not birth centre due to baby size)

Thanks 🙏

Hi! I didn’t want to read & run.
I think it would probably depend on the consultant or midwife, however my experience has been that they like you to be as close to 39 weeks as possible for delivery.
I have a high level of fluid & a baby that is measuring big & my midwife said I was to ask to be induced when I next saw the consultant which was 37+5.
That unfortunately couldn’t happen for me as my baby has an unstable lie, & I was admitted to hospital straight away & a c-section planned for 38+5 to be as close to 39 weeks as possible.
I wish you all the best, I can’t imagine how painful your SPD must be. X

Thank you @lynsey19 - I’m so torn whether to elect for a c-section. Baby is measuring off the charts he was over 6lbs at 33 weeks so they have already said they will
Induce me at 40 weeks and not let me go over. I’m just wondering how I will get through the next few weeks without sinking into a depression ☹️

I was in a very similar position and the consultant was adamant they wouldn't induce before 39 weeks. I gave birth spontaneously at 38 weeks exactly - she was 8lb 5oz in the end so manageable. They did a series of sweeps from 37 weeks so perhaps press for that rather than the induction. In my experience the sweeps weren't difficult to get agreement for x

I was induced at 38+3 as baby measuring just under 95th since 20 weeks, and 1st was a ventouse at a fairly dainty 6.11. Scan at 38 weeks, consultant next day and started induction the day after that. Needed a ventouse so just in time! Consultant had to order the ward to do the induction as they had no spaces but he wanted it done asap!

I can imagine that is not an easy decision - for me it has just had to be a section.
I’m relieved it has been all booked in as planned is much better than emergency. I know I’ll be well rested beforehand which will hopefully help with the recovery.
Knowing that they won’t let you go over is very reassuring though!
I would get in touch with your midwife or consultant if you have one to discuss your options. They will not want you to be miserable and I’m sure they’ll do their best to help.
I hope you can try and stay positive knowing that it won’t be long til you can meet your precious baby. X

They agreed to 40 weeks, they don't like to induce earlier as the failure rate or major intervention is so high!!

Don't believe the scans the estimates can be out massively.

I measured small for dates... she was 10lb 6oz and I'm only 5'...

You just need to rest rest rest and find an osteopath qualified to treat you Thanks

My friend has BIG babies and wants to be induced now she's on her third but had been told they will not induce based on a high birth weight..
she may opt for c-section

RandomMess · 25/12/2018 18:29

@Bigonesmallone3 3 & 4 were smaller than #2 so unless she badly tore honestly I'm not sure it's worth a c-section!

I’ve tried two osteopaths, accupuncture, pregnancy massage and physio - none have helped at all I’m in constant pain. The fact he is big is exacerbating it I think but I’m talking about being induced due to the SPD pain rather than his size. They already told me they would do a c-section as he is so heavy..... but I’d prefer a natural birth. I’m just feeling so conflicted! 🙈

It's really tough, I remember the excruciating pain very well.

Seriously you need to be in bed rest Thanks

Thanks @randommess - how did you cope with the mental side of being in so much pain? Pre pregnancy I worked out every day and I’m finding being incapacitated so difficult mentally - I’m trying to stay upbeat but it’s getting so hard.

I had a 6 year old with a broken arm and 14 month old when the baby was born so I just had to get on with it...

Permanently sleep deprived as couldn't sleep! Lots of ice packs...

Osteopath stretching out all the overtight stuff clinging to my pelvic cage helped, shuffled along leaning on the pram, made baby crawl everywhere - happy days!

Gosh that must have been so hard! What a soldier you are 🙌

I’ve got a midwife appointment on Friday so I’ll ask them for advice on what (if anything I can do)
