C section overweight?

I've read recently that there's increased issues if you're overweight and have a c section.

Anyone had a c section with higher bmi that can shine some light?

No c section planned just preparing!

I am overweight (borderline obese) and had an EMCS with my second child. I didn't experience any problems at all.

Obesity does increase the risk of lots of issues in both pregnancy and delivery itself, but that doesn't mean that everyone who's overweight will have all or even any of them. Off the top of my head, this includes: -

  • Increased chance of difficulty with spinal/epidural anaesthetic, so might need a GA. And GA is riskier if you're obese.
  • Difficulty with surgical access if your abdomen is very big, so increased risk of blood loss.
  • Increased risk of post-op wound infection
  • Increased risk of DVT post-op, so you'd need to wear TED stockings and/or inject blood thinners.

I'm just in the obese category (BMI 31) and had a normal delivery last time, planning for the same again. If I needed a CS though, I wouldn't be too worried - I've anaesthetised for hundreds of them and know roughly what to expect. All the things I've mentioned get more likely the more overweight you are, so someone with a BMI of 50 would be more challenging than someone my size.

I have a very high BMI and had an EMCS. I had a small amount of superficial tearing at one side but otherwise was issue free.
I used colloidal silver religiously while my scar was healing, which I credit with the good recovery.

I had an elective c section but this was only confirmed at 36 weeks and was largely due to size of baby than me (he came out at 10lb 3oz!). Very positive experience, recovery was a bit challenging but 4 weeks on and we are both doing great Smile

I had an elective c section and I was technically obese bmi 34 and was fine

Good luck

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 25/12/2018 06:36

I've had four c sections, I was overweight, bmi 31 with the last two. Everything was absolutely fine, they were more concerned it being my 4th section, than my weight.

Baby just to reassure you they aren’t always overly accurate with estimating babies weight. At 36 weeks dd was measured and scanned as being 8lbs 13, she was then born at 40+5 weighing 8lbs 13. I had a csection and at the time was pretty obese (not sure if BMI but size 20). I would imagine as everything the risks are higher when obese but Idisnt experience any additional difficulties.

My bmi is 36 and i have a csection planned under GA due to placenta previa. Noone has even mentioned my weight or bmi so should be ok.

Have managed to keep my weight pretty stable throughout think ive gained about half a stone and baby is estimated weight of 6lb 3oz at 35 wks.

crosser62 · 25/12/2018 15:53

I was big, and even bigger pregnant.
Was fine, absolutely fine and I had educated myself on the risks as I was worried about everything and considered a high risk pregnancy due to previous problems.

Unfortunately pre eclampsia added to my overall size and risk.

It was fine as I said, recovered well, quickly and dropped the weight within the year postbirth.

thelastshihtzu · 25/12/2018 16:23

I had an obese BMI and a planned c section. Everything went very smoothly and I've had a textbook recovery. My baby is 4 months old now.

Gillian1980 · 26/12/2018 00:16

My bmi is high, can’t remember exactly but classed as morbidly obese. I had a caesarean and they said there were higher risks but as I didn’t actually have any choice I didn’t dwell on it.
I was given clexane injections after to minimise risk of clots and I had a special dressing which they use on obese women to aid healing while reducing risk from fat rolls causing infection.
