My friend is 20+ wks pregnant.
She has had a visit to the local hospital and wasn't pleased with what she saw! And now really doesn't want to give birth there.

She has been in touch with another local hospital who sound lovely. The problem is that she lost blood after her DS's birth and she has been told by the 2nd hospital that it needs to be less than 500ml for them to let her give birth there. She believes she lost nearer 900ml but is still waiting for confirmation of this(she asked her consultant at the 1st hospital for this 2mths ago!). 2nd hospital also said if its 700ml then they will refer her to a consultant.

Its really upsetting and stressing her out that she may have no choice but to give birth in the 1st hospital which she hates!

Homebirth also out due to blood loss and she isn't that keen on having a home birth anyway.

Has anyone got any advice i could pass on to her? Is there someone she can contact? Any rights she has over her choice of hospital?

She just wants to be allowed to give birth in the hospital of her choice.

TIA

Sounds strange about the blood loss thing... I mean I don't understand why the 2nd hospital are being funny about it. I thought you could just choose which hospital you wanted? I think she just needs to be firm and not back down, and definitely find out more about their issue with the blood loss.

Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge will turn up soon!

BTW I chose the hopsital i had my first DC in it becuase I liked it better than the ones that were nearer me...

I am not sure sorry - but wish her lots of luck. I got to choose my own hospital, there weren't any conditions.

I did'nt give birth at my nearest hospital as i'm not keen on our local hospital. Which hospital is it?

Tell her to talk to her midwife, she should be aloud to give birth in the hospital of her choice.

I think its because they are not equipted for bigger blood losses but will check with her tomorrow.

1st hospital is Yeovil.2nd is Shepton mallet.
her midwife is very hard to get hold of and sounds like she hasn't been much help so far!

I went to yeovil with an early bleed, they were useless, my midwife gave me a choice of 2 hospitals yeovil or dorchester as i am in between the 2. I would'nt want to give bith in yeovil, also yeovil's special care baby unit is tiny which worried me.

I had DS1 in Yeovil hosp 10yrs ago! I can't remember what the hospital was like though.

What about Taunton? I had DD there 18 months ago and am booked in there again for 2nd baby due in 6 weeks. Actually started off in Bridgwater but had to be moved due to complications and the fact that Bridgwater has no special care facilities and no specialists/surgeons that can perform c-sections or emergency care. I think this is the same for Shepton. Your friend should be allowed to have her baby in Yeovil or Taunton and then, provided everything is ok, be moved to Shepton for her aftercare the next day (It is lovely there, private rooms and really relaxing surroundings.)

Thanks boo. I will see what she thinks about that.About an hour to taunton from here though so that might be a worry for her.

Yeah, can see that. About 45 minutes for me. And Yeovil is about 20/25 minutes. Unfortunately there isn't anywhere really close and I think I just go on the assumption that having a baby generally takes a long time!! Would be great if it didn't though....

tortoise · 26/06/2007 20:30

I have a feeling she will be happier to travel than to give birth in yeovil!

If worse comes to worse, a hospital won't turn you away if you are in labour if you get what I mean...
She really should be able to go to the hospital of her choice though.
