Flu jabs

Hi all, was going to book flu jabs tomorrow, but I heard you can buy them over the counter at most pharmacies, how does that work? Do they give you an injection? Never done it before.....is it easy?

Some pharmacies have a consultation room and do the injections in there. You don't need to pay though, you're entitled to it for free because you're pregnant. I got mine done at my GP, not sure if a pharmacy would want to see your maternity exemption card before giving it for free.

Yes - though in Boots you have to book ahead. Tell them on the phone if you're pregnant though, with my first pg I think they had to give a different version.

I had to pay at Boots (I think is only free at GP)

Worth checking with your midwife but our clinic do them when you go in for your scan if you haven’t already sorted it. I was kicking myself for taking a slot at the doctors when I didn’t need to

I get my NHS flu jab (asthma) free at Boots every year. You can book online.

RachelDod · 21/12/2018 00:39

I got mine free at Boots a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the advice ladies! Would rather not use go time of it can be avoided. I'll talk to midwife, hospital and boots to see what's best. I might get it free as I'm pregnant

It’s donr by the nurse at the gp / I had my whooping cough at the same time and they wrote in my notes

Boots were happy to give it to me for free, but didn’t have any in stock. Lloyds Pharmacy and one other which I forget (might just be a local thing, and I’m not from round here) also do a free one. Couldn’t find either of them on foot in the town centre, so went to a Tesco. They gave me one (had to wait around a bit, but luckily wasn’t in a hurry) and didn’t ask for any documentation, which was nice (but I did have my notes and maternity exemption certificate on me).

I think most other pharmacies charge for flu jabs, even if you are pregnant.

My maternity unit has a walk-in service - they say you can be in and out in 10 minutes. I don’t know if they offer this before the first scan - my midwife told me there’s no risk from the flu jab for the baby, but sometimes things go wrong anyway, so they give the jab at the first scan, and that way if you have problems at the first scan it definitely wasn’t the jab. But the nurse with the needle was off when I had my scan, and the hospital is a trek in a direction I didn’t want to go.

I tried to get it done at tesco but they refused as I was pregnant and told me to go to my gp. I had it done at the gp by a nurse.
