Hyperemesis without vomiting?

Looking for some help/advice/reassurance.... anything really...

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and have severe nausea. It started at 4+3 and is getting worse day by day. At first it was just waves of nausea, now it's the minute I open my eyes till the moment I go to sleep. I'm struggling to shower because that makes me feel horrendous, I can't wear certain colours as they make me feel sick. I can't talk on the phone, can't go to the toilet without wanting to vom. I'm dry heaving and nothing is coming out. The smell of brushing my teeth is making me hurl.

I'm managing to eat, but if I eat one thing for breakfast, I can't eat it again as it reminds me of feeling sick & makes me heave. So I'm struggling to find things that are okay to eat now. I'm going to ring my dr's tomorrow to find out if they can give me anything. But my main question is, has anyone had HG without vomiting?

Sorry for the long post x

Sorry you are feeling so bad, I remember the dry heaving well but it's no Hyperemesis without vomiting. In my experience you just need to do what you can to keep hydrated, small sips of water helped. Also see your GP because they can provide anti-sickness meds which also helped me.

If it's not HG it should pass after 12-16 weeks (seems ages I know). Good luck.

This was me and it’s finally gone at 16 weeks! As the previous posted said, it’s not hyperemesis without vomiting but sickness meds from the Dr could help. Good luck!

Yes this is me, I have the same thing and have only actually been sick once. I'm now ten weeks. I've noticed a slight improvement in the last three days. I think go to your gp for help - I haven't because I'm generally able to eat ok. But it's hard. If I think about nausea I'm back there again!

This was me. Consultant gave anti nausea medication which helped. Try ice lollies or if you can find some smoothie lollies. I found I was very hesitant to try anything so eventually found a smoothie i liked the taste of and froze it in ice cube trays. Small enough to cope with.

NationalShiteDay · 20/12/2018 06:06

This was me. It carried on all the way through pregnancy (sorry).

A combination of cyclazine and ondansetron helped a lot. Also eating very bland beige things like chips. Very different to my usual diet. Sipping drinks constantly helped.

I put on 4st in pregnancy as I had to eat my way through it to stop the nausea. If I wasn't medicated I was sick, but the nausea never really went away.

My baby is 6mo now and fabulous. There were times when I didn't think I could carry on, but we got through it.

I had similar - it may not officially be hyperemesis but if you can't drink dehydration is a very real risk. You may also find it tips in vomiting as you get further along - 7 weeks is unfortunately unlikely to be the worst week.

Definitely ask for help, and don't assume it's trivial - I saw the doctor 3 times in a week at 16 weeks as they were really worried about dizziness spells and a very high heart rate which turned out to be caused by mild dehydration. When they tested, I had ketones in my urine. The first drug they gave me didn't help but cyclizine worked wonders.

evuscha · 20/12/2018 08:30

I'm almost 9 weeks now and had exactly the same thing, not a lot of vomitting but the nausea was so severe I couldn't do anything, and I lost a lot of weight. I got prescribed cyclizine and it really helped!

MeghanV07 · 20/12/2018 08:39

Thanks so much ladies. Have rang the dr's this morning, hope they give me this cyclizine as I've seen a lot of people swear by it!

I almost need to make myself by sick, but I hate being sick so I can't bloody win! Just Sod's law it's kind Christmas. Just need to keep telling myself it will be worth it.

I had this with my DS, but it was nowhere near as bad as this! At least I could bloody shower without wanting to vom 🤢 xxx

If it doesn't work have a google of pregnancy sickness support. Lots of advice there

53rdWay · 20/12/2018 12:08

It can count as hyperemesis without vomiting. But the main thing is that no matter what name you give it, it’s severe pregnancy sickness that is stopping you being able to function so drugs are the right option. Hope the cyclizine works - if it doesn’t go back, there are other ones they can try.

(I had HG with nausea and vomiting and the nausea was the worst part by far!)

WeeBean · 20/12/2018 12:48

Aw I really feel for you! I'm 14 weeks to tomorrow and have had severe nausea with vomiting 3-6 times a day and I would hands down choose the vomiting over the nausea any day. I was the same as you with clothes etc making me feel I'll (and on occasion vomit). It is getting better, it's great that you've got medication and I really hope it helps, I wouldn't wish this nausea on anyone! Feel better soon!

Reastie · 20/12/2018 13:48

I’ve had/got this. It’s awful so I really sympathise. With dd it completely broke me mentally and I said I could never do it again but it took 7 years to think i could try to get through it. I’m the same as you in that there are times I can’t talk to anyone or even watch tv as they make me feel worse. I was on cyclizine last time which made me feel like I could cope but I was still bedbound for weeks as moving or doing anything made it worse.

This time around I did a lot of research and spoke to my gp before getting pg. I also spoke to pregnancy sickness support who are fantastic. They told me because it was greatly impacting on my quality of life I should be entitled to medication whether or not I had vomiting. Last time I was made to feel I was lucky to have cyclizine and there were no other options.

This time I have cyclizine and ondansetron which I take regularly and prochlorperazine which I take as and when needed on top. I still can’t do much as it makes it worse and I still have times where it’s dire and all I do is cry and wonder why I thought I could do this and that I can’t take a single second longer but they really have helped. I spent weeks 4-7ish just googling terminations and sobbing to my gp that I couldn’t cope.

For me ondansetron has made the most difference, but it’s a second line treatment (so is thought of as a little more riskier than cyclizine) and it’s very expensive so they don’t tend to like prescribing it it for me if I hadn’t have got it I don’t think I would have got to this point (I’m 13 weeks).

I really hope you feel better soon and I’m sure cyclizine will make a difference to you. I got utterly fed up with people telling me to eat ginger biscuits as if I hadn’t tried it! When it’s severe these things really can’t do a lot.

Things that helped me were resting (for Hyperemesis other than medication resting is one of the most helpful things to do), I’ve given up on work for now until I can manage it, I’ve had to get family to help with dd and dh has been doing all the cooking. Eating often. There’s a window of opportunity where I coukd manage to eat and if I missed it (even by a minute) it would be too late and the nausea wours be worse and then I couldn’t eat and then I’d feel sicker and it would be an awful vicious circle. I’ve put on over a stone so far and last pg I put on over 4 stone but I had to to cope with the nausea. It’s just annoying to out on weight when you’re not enjoying the food at all! Eat what you can manage at that second, which will change from moment to moment. Generally things like crackers or potatoes or salt and vinegar crisps seem quite common to be ok with. I struggled to drink water as it made it worse but sucking on an ice cube was a little better (apparently lots of people swear by ice lollies). For a while I couod manage to eat watermelon which gave me some liquid. I literally still have to eat something at least every half hour, sometimes more. An antacid can be good if you have nausea from heartburnso you couod try gaviscon. Some people swear by flat coke to drink.

I hope it gets better soon for you. Last time I had it all the way through but it did get a lot better from 20 weeks and I’m now 13 weeks so just last half way to get there! My huge sympathies as I think if peooe haven’t experienced how relentless and awful it is and just had normal ms they can be quite bad at sympathising and think you should just get on with it, whichever just makes it worse!

toadabode · 30/12/2018 17:47

Sorry but you're nowhere near experiencing the suffering that comes along with hyperemisis. Just keep hydrated and hopefully the cyclizine will help as at only week 7 you're likely to feel worse before things get better. Good luck!
