Pregnant teacher

Hi everyone! My first post.
Is anyone else out there a pregnant teacher? I'm 6+6 and I've been feeling constant guilt since I found out I was pregnant. I have 6 exam groups (Y11-Y13) and I am feeling grateful that I'll be giving birth around August time so I'll be okay to get these groups through their exams but I just feel awful for the Year 12 groups I'll be leaving behind for almost a year. How do I tell myself this is okay? I also feel like I'm going to be missing out on progression at work but I know I can't put off starting a family for ages - I've wanted this baby for a while.

Just wanted to know if anyone is in a similar position?

There's never a good time - always more Y11s on the horizon!

I’m a teacher but primary. I recognise myself in your post from my first pregnancy. Sadly the main lesson I learnt first time around was that we are replaceable, life goes on regardless of when we have our babies. I did feel guilty first time around but not this time. Motherhood is definitely an identity shock, I found the transition quite hard but all fine now and looking forward to meeting DC2. I apologise if this post isn’t what you wanted to hear!

I'm 21 weeks with dc3 And also a teacher in secondary. I fortunately don't teach y11, but I am feeling guilty about leaving my year 10s. I teach a core subject and they struggle to get decent staff so l also worry about maternity cover but life will go on I know! Just wanted you to know it's a normal feeling in teaching!

I'm a social worker. I'm leaving midway through a clinical trial and a court case. I feel just awful about it. For those I work with and my colleagues I'm having to move it on to.

But I can't change it. I didn't know when I'd get pregnant and there's always the potential for it to be a bad time!

I'm sure once baby arrives we'll be focused elsewhere!

Also a secondary teacher of a core subject. I'm due in April, so before students go on revision leave. I don't feel guilty - I've wanted this baby for a while. We work to live, not live to work. Good luck with your baby 🙂

I could've wrote your post myself!
Also due in August and also have the same guilt about my year 13s (and 10s too).
I'm yet to tell my HOD, i only started this school in September but have been desperate for a family for a few years so we went for it.

Thanks everyone, it's reassuring to see that some of you are in a similar position to me. Just hate these feelings of guilt and uncertainty!

I’m a primary school teacher and pregnant with my third. Stopping teaching at Christmas but going back to be a TA/ helper so cover can start for consistency in class. Have had a lot of parents say how much they’ll miss me etc.. but as a PP said- life goes on and we are replaceable lol! As soon as my first baby came my focus changed and I’m not as protective of my class being left with someone else as I was with my first. Enjoy the time with your baby. As teachers we always feel guilty for time off poorly (wait till your child is poorly too and you need time off) but enjoy this time xxx

voxnihili · 19/12/2018 20:36

I think it's natural to worry about the classes you're leaving behind. But as someone else said, there will always be the next year group coming along.

Having an August baby is fab as a teacher - you can start your maternity leave on your due date (unless baby comes earlier), then go back for the last week in July Smile.

I'm a teacher and have managed to time the baby as well as I could. I will have to leave work 4 weeks before the end of term but my 3 lots of leavers will have already started all their exams by then so I won't be missing teaching and learning time. I'm so sad to be leaving early though - I'm head of year and devastated to be missing their graduation and end of year celebrations but there's nothing I can do about it.

I am a primary teacher. I was supposed to start mat leave in January but ended up signed off for SPD. Our school has just been academised and the scrutiny sounds unreal, my colleagues all sound like they're having mental breakdowns so I just think thank God I'm not there. It's making me rethink going back to full time teaching, definitely.
My fantasy is working in education in a museum or national trust place (I have a history degree).
