Morning everyone!

So... I have a few questions and who better to ask than those who have been through / are going through it!?

  1. How were your experiences during the first trimester of pregnancy? I have heard mixed reviews personally... one woman I know really suffered during this time, whereas my SIL breezed through it!

  2. Do any of you have any experience of being overweight and pregnant? I am not super overweight, but am certainly carrying 3 stone more than would be ideal! Are you treated differently if your overweight? Do they weigh you at every appointment? I love and trust my husband dearly, but I'm still not sure that I want him (or indeed anyone that I know personally) knowing my weight!

  3. When did you start getting your bumps?

Thanks,
Stella x

  1. I have had three babies, each time was different, first was normal a bit of nausea but not too bad, second was horrendous -land I was sick every day until he was born, third i felt amazing and I wouldn’t have even known I was pregnant if I hadn’t taken a test!

  2. I was weighed at my booking in appointment each time but that was it. With babies 2 and 3 I was over the ideal bmi and all that was different was I had a glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks to test for gestational diabetes which I never had.

  3. again different each time, first was about 16-18 weeks when it popped out and others could tell although I noticed differences before then. Ds2 I was huge really early and all the way through. Number 3 about 14 weeks before it popped although I was bloated before then.

Just to add with my weight, I never wanted to know what it was so the midwife just wrote it on my notes and didn’t say it out loud.

  1. Nothing. Maybe the odd vomiting spell. I actually didn't realise I was pregnant with DS till I was almost 20 weeks! I had bleeding, fairly heavy at times, so had no reason to suspect.
  1. I can't help much with this one I'm afraid. But I think they do as a rule keep an eye on your weight to make sure you're gaining within the healthy sort of range.
  1. Probably around 28 weeks. Then I seemed to double in size overnight Grin

  1. I was incredibly tired and nauseous if my tummy was empty, so had to eat little and often but never actually sick.

  2. I think I was only weighed at my booking in appointment. I wasn't overweight so don't have personal experience but I believe you may be restricted in where you are allowed to plan to give birth if your BMI is over a certain level. I think my local birth Centre only took women with a BMI below 30.

  3. I thought I could see a bump at 12 weeks but it was probably just tummy in hindsight Grin A proper bump was probably visible more around the 16 week mark.

This is my first pregnancy, suffered terrible HG up until a few days ago when it seemed to clear up, but I know it can come back at any point. When I had my midwife appt at 16 weeks she was absolutely disgusted with the doctors, my urine was showing 3+ ketones and I've lost 2 stone in weight and they still didn't refer me to get an IV but she said I was in desperate need of one weeks ago, but because I'm not a size 8 they seem to have just fobbed me off. Luckily I can now go up to maternity for any problems instead of my GP or gynae. Not sure when I started to show, think it was around 12 weeks and now you can see my belly button is being stretched quite a lot. If you feel you are being ignored due to your weight, just phone your midwife. I wish I had weeks ago and I could have probably skipped a few weeks of the HG and kept some weight on, even though it needs to come off it's not the healthiest thing to lose weight during pregnancy.

  1. my first trimester was rubbish, but probably not the worst of the 3. I was constantly tired and nauseous but many women have it a lot worse so I try not to complain about it!

  2. I was 4 stone overweight when I got pregnant. I then put on another 4 stone (oops). I was weighed at booking and then not again for the entire pregnancy. It made no difference to the care I received, but I had excellent blood pressure and heart readings, which might have made a difference.

  3. I had a noticeable bump from around 20 weeks. I’m tall though, which did always make it look smaller. Even at the end, I didn’t look 9 months pregnant! Had a big baby hiding there somewhere though lol

  1. I had sore boobs, a bit of indigestion and tiredness in the first trimester.

  2. my bmi was 32 at booking. The only difference this has made so far is that i was tested for gestational diabetes.

  3. i think i was about 23 weeks before i started to look pregnant rather than fat! Lol

  1. with my first DS I sailed through every trimester with no problems at all. I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant with DD and I felt nauseous in the first trimester and at the moment I'm getting a really sore back along with back spasms :(

  2. can't help here

  3. with DS I started to show at about 18 weeks and my bump came along at about 15 weeks this time!

  1. Felt a bit tired but no sickness or nausea at all with the first trimester. I'm in my third trimester now and still not feeling as tired as in the first couple of months. I did lose my appetite quite a lot but then again it was in that extremely hot June.

  2. I've got a bmi of 44 and there is quite a few extra growth scans, gestational diabetes test (which I don't have) and I'm not allowed to use the maternity unit. However I've only put on 3kg (around 6lb) and am now 34 weeks so not too bad. Midwife is happy with that.

  3. Probably not until around 20 weeks - didn't feel any movement until around 22 weeks either.

Roomba · 18/12/2018 13:23

I was exhausted during the 1st trimester with DS1. No sickness just a full body tiredness and nodding off at my desk! With DS2 it was so totally different I didn't even know I was pregnant during the 1st trimester.

No experience re being overweight, sorry.

Bumps - with DS1 I could see a bump myself by 2weeks but it was a few more weeks before people who didn't know starting asking if I was pregnant. With DS2 no bump at all until about 28 weeks, even then it wasn't very big. Two midwives estimated I was 16-18 weeks along when I was 29 weeks! DS was back to back which made a big difference I think (also anterior placenta so not much movement felt - very baffling after being kicked hard 24/7 with DS1 from early on).

Hello :)

I’m in currently 8 weeks pregnant and have a nice collection of horrible symtoms.. sore boobs, back pain, bad skin, absolutely shattered and nausea pretty much all the time.. lost our wee girl at 14 weeks in January so happy to take the symptoms on the chin ☺️

I had a BMI of 30.5 last pregnancy and was just given an extra blood test, midwife was discreet with actual weight.. I’m heavier this time round and have my booking appointment tomorrow so will see if anything changes.

Didn’t quite get to a bump stage last time and nothing yet apart from a swollen bloated tummy, got a feeling this one might show earlier this time.

Congratulations to you :) x
