Back hip and leg pain in my left side, anybody know what it is?

Hello ladies, I'm just over 16 weeks with my baby boy, I have been having pain in my left hand side above my hip for a while now but the past few weeks it's radiating into my bum cheek and the higher part of my leg, I have tried researching but it's hard when I'm I'm looking for something so specific, I struggle to be on my feet for a long period of time which is difficult because my job involves alot of standing and walking around and because the pain can be so bad I've had to call in sick quite a few times which then concerns me about losing my job, I did mention the hip pain to my midwife a while ago but she said she doesn't know what it is and I feel as though my gp are very dismissive of anything I go there for so I never feel like I can go as I feel like a burden but it's causing me alot of pain. Baby is doing well and growing perfectly so no concerns there with it being anything to do with him. I just feel a little lost and worried about it all at the minute

Does anybody have any idea what it could be? Paracetamol doesnt ease it either this is my first pregnancy so I don't know what's normal etc

Thanks in advance x

is it pelvic girdle pain? That can be severe though it may be just from carrying the baby weight-I had painful hips and the top of my legs along the knicker line, I went to the osteopath who said it was the extra strain on the body and clicked me into place which helped but didnt completely get rid of it-I'm surprised your midwife said she didnt know what it was! Not very helpful is it? Mine offered to refer me to the physio at the hospital but I didnt go down that route as getting there was hard enough as it was.

Sciatica?

lelrx · 17/12/2018 18:47

My doctors aren't the best, the NHS are amazing but I just don't rate my surgery at all, they are very dismissive and it takes alot to get me there as it is as I suffer from anxiety so then when I do go I leave feeling even worse, the midwife is the same too and I just felt like I was a pain calling her. I have looked online about sciatica but not the one you mentioned above so I will take a look. I think I'm going to swap doctors anyway because it makes me so anxious to go but I need some advice or atleast a doctors letter for work to explain that I have something as I don't want them sacking me for having time off
It's so stressful, thank you for your response x

Possibly sciatica? I’ve had it both my pregnancies and a couple of times when not pregnant. Unfortunately whilst pregnant GP is very much “nothing we can do”. Prenatal yoga has helped slightly (even if it’s just making me feel like I’m trying to sort the pain).

lelrx · 17/12/2018 18:49

Thank you @merrybear can anything be done for sciatica do you know? And does it sound like that, I have googled the symptoms after my husband mentioned it but he usually has no idea about anything like that so I didn't think it would be that but funnily enough it sounds about right and pregnancy can bring it on

Thank you x

Can you get referred or self refer to a physio? Saw NHS physio who gave me exercises and treatment that totally cleared up my sciatica.

Are you lying on your left side while sleeping by any chance?

lelrx · 17/12/2018 18:51

Even a note from my doctors stating it for work would be helpful because I think they think I'm just milking it and I'm really not, some days I don't have a problem then others it's awful 😓

Google piriformis stretch for pregnant women and follow the stretches. Hold for 20 seconds each, be gentle. I found this helped when I have trapped nerve/sciatica nearer the end of my pregnancy last year.

When I had*

MerryBear · 17/12/2018 19:02

I was the same, that’s what triggered the sciatica. All that pressure on the left hip, and it can sort of twist the spine sideways.

Can you get one of those long skinny pillows that twist round you? Especially to support you at the waist so your spine stays straight.

When was you all diagnosed with these problems, this morning I rushed to A&E due to a bleed when I woke up and discussed this with the doctor etc and they're saying it's too early to tell me what it could be. I had a scan and baby is fine thankfully I was so upset this morning xx

That’s how pelvic girdle pain starts for me.

Self refer to the physio now. By the time your appointment comes around you’ll need it

In the circumstances, you really need to speak to your doctors.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/12/2018 11:56

Sounds like sciatica, I think I had it I pregnancy. Well, I self diagnosed and did stretches for it at my pregnancy yoga class and it got much better quite quickly, then was practically gone by full term.

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2018 12:30

I had physio when I was expecting DS2 for similar pain. I mentioned it at antenatal clinic and they referred me straight away. Instant relief.

lelrx · 18/12/2018 12:42

How many weeks was you when you was referred I'm just over 16 and they said they can't tell until I'm 20 weeks so won't do anything until then 😓 x

I can't remember now but was past 20 weeks.
