Hello All!
After some advice... I'm around 10wks in.. still awaiting my first scan. I'm having horrendous bloating and haven't been feeling that well during the first trimester. As a result I'm already around 8lbs heavier than I was before!! Lots of laying around and over eating. I'm hoping most of the extra weight is bloat, but I'm really worried about putting on too much weight during pregnancy and want to try and keep this in check. Has anyone here exercised throughout their pregnancies? What is safe/not safe? Can I go for a run? Or shall I just get over it and put the weight on!? Haven't done any exercise for a while so would easily become out of breath very quickly!

Thanks!

I’ve exercised all the way through so far and I’ve been fine, now 17 + 3.

I normally do weights, hiit and cardio.

Have just scaled back the weights to lighter ones, don’t do anything too high intensity that’s going to get my heart rate too high and keep my cardio a bit lighter.

I think running is fine ! I just can’t face that as starting to get a lot more breathless now too haha.

P.s. even though I’ve exercised 3/4 times a week I’ve still put on weight but then I only need to look at food for that to happen 😂

BlueberryCat · 16/12/2018 11:15

Thank you so much! That's really helpful. This is my first so no idea what should/shouldn't be done!!

Mine too but I checked with my doc and she said ok to carry on as is just scaling it back a bit but not to start anything new!

It’s so hard to motivate yourself to go though so I tend just to pop round to the gym on my lunch break as it’s jusr around the corner from my work.

The general advice is to carry on as you were pre pregnancy, if you feel up to it. It sounds like you weren't doing too much anyway so I wouldn't advise jumping in feet first and going for a run. How about a 30min brisk walk each day? Swimming a couple of times a week? Pregnancy yoga or pilates class? Aquanatal? Good way to meet some potential mat leave buddies too.

I really wouldn't worry too much though, just do what you can.

SoyDora · 16/12/2018 11:24

You shouldn’t take up any new activities during pregnancy, but can carry on doing what you were doing previously.
If you weren’t exercising pre pregnancy I’d advise walking/gentle swimming.

OctoberGirl91 · 16/12/2018 12:15

I also wanted to jump on here only got my BFP this week but I'm overweight and after a MC on 4th October I want to stay active but without doing it as I've not been gym for months.

Would swimming be ok?xx

Mikewazowskismrs · 16/12/2018 12:44

Swimming would be fine, it’s recommend in pregnancy 👍🏼

Triskaidekaphilia · 16/12/2018 12:45

I've had to cut my cardio because I'm just

Triskaidekaphilia · 16/12/2018 12:48

Oops posted too soon:

  • too tired to do my interval training, I just do some uphill walking instead. Had to skip a week altogether when I was 6 weeks as my sickness was so bad, but now I'm back in. My trainer has made some slight adjustments to my weights programme so that I can keep doing them until later in pregnancy, and I've only had to slightly reduce the weights on some and maintained on others.
Darkstar4855 · 16/12/2018 12:58

I cycled to work up until 28 weeks, then just tried to get plenty of brisk walking in. After I went on mat leave at 36 weeks I went swimming every other day which helped with the aches and pains!

There’s also a few pregnancy workout dvds around that you could try - I did buy a couple but never got round to doing them!

Reastie · 16/12/2018 16:35

Hi, you’re not alone! I’m nearly 13 weeks and have put on over a stone as I have to eat all the time with the nausea which is relentless and breaking me. Pre preg I worked out most days but I’ve done nothing since week 5.

I can’t wait to feel a bit less sick then I’m going back on my exercise bike and will build this up gradually. Also plan to do some pg yoga and hopefully other bits if I can too. I miss my workouts!

coco91 · 16/12/2018 16:41

I did Aquanatal classes which were great because they were run by midwives and specifically tailored for pregnant women. I would definitely recommend it x

Beckyv88 · 16/12/2018 17:03

I quit high intensity work outs but have still been doing yoga, barre, swimming and cross trainer. They’re all on the OK list for exercises in pregnancy, just be careful with yoga and stretching because some things are dangerous. But despite doing these exercises I’ve still gained 10lbs at 17 weeks :/

Spargle · 16/12/2018 17:05

I would recommend waiting until you feel a little less dreadful to start exercising. Maybe go for gentle walks until you’re out of the first trimester?

I’m 13 weeks now, and just starting to feel as though maybe I could exercise. I’m hoping to start yoga as soon as I have a free Friday evening (it’s a difficult time of year for that!).

TokenGinger · 16/12/2018 17:12

Search Nancy Taylor First Trimester Workouts on YouTube. I've been following those. I put the app on through my tv and do a 20 min workout. They're fantastic and completely safe.

BlueberryCat · 16/12/2018 17:12

Thank you!

Walking and gentle exercises sounds like a great start. I can't wait to start feeling a bit more like me again - although right now it doesn't feel like that's ever going to happen!!

I just kept on with all my usual classes - body pump til 38 weeks, body combat til 36 and then walked a mile to a yoga studio and did yoga every day for the last 2 weeks. I think I put on 10lb in total in my pregnancy but that was probably just luck!
