Maternity Wear

9+2 and no bras fit and I am definitely expanding in lower tummy area. Went to gp for certain things and they think twins (run in my family my mum had two sets including myself who has a twin brother) but first mat appt isn’t tilFriday and then i will have to wait for scan!

Anyway, got me thinking about maternity wear. What did you guys deem as essential/couldn’t do without and what was a waste of money?

Was just thinking nuraing type bras, over bump leggings as they’re reasonable then I can just get normal tunic things but bigger though I have been eyeing some dungaress that have adjustable straps

Maternity jeans, non wired bras, comfy knickers, over bump leggings and maybe some under bump ones too (I found the bump bit quite baggy on some brands and they sat weird).

Those are my essentials :) x

By far my maternity essential is Gap maternity jeans. They look and feel like normal jeans. They're amazing.

Maternity leggings, it's all I wear now! H&M do great over the bump ones, I have about 5 pairs and they get worn with long tight fitting dresses and oversized shirts. Also comfy non wired bras, I'm big in that department so found mothercare to be the best. Worth asking any mates who have had kids recently, they may have some maternity clothes you can borrow too

I lived in maternity leggings (ASOS do great and cheap ones) also under bump jeans in the summer and over bump jeans in the winter - baggy maternity tops to allow room you don't know how large your bump will grow Smile

hammeringinmyhead · 15/12/2018 11:03

For me it was ASOS maternity under bump jeans, New Look maternity t shirts, ASOS dungarees (it was summer though, may now be a bit cold for rolled cuffs and Converse!) and casual dresses from Happy Mama online. Plus nursing bras from Emma Jane.

Thanks everyone. I’m due in July so will truly be going through all the seasons!

I'm 14+5 and already in H&M overbump leggings. I love them. I wear them with regular long line H&M t-shirts at the moment and vintage maternity smocks etc. I don't fancy underbump stuff as I usually wear high waisted 1940s-50s stuff. Feels weird to wear low slung stuff. I need some bras but need to wait until I'm on holiday for Christmas and in a country where the average size isn't an A/B cup.

mortifiedmama · 15/12/2018 13:17

I just sized up in my normal bras, can't stand non underwired ones!

le42 · 15/12/2018 16:23

I really liked the long vest tops H&M do - they are stretchy so I just went up a size and good under jumpers in winter and by themselves for you in the summer. I didn’t find maternity jeans very comfortable as I has pelvic pain I found them hard to pull on. I like the new look dresses - they have cute styles and really reasonable. You can always sell things when you are done. My sister was heavily pregnant in the summer and wore lots of maxi dresses as they are stretchy material. X

For bras I have got sporty type ones from gap. I always said I would but don't think I could hack lace and underwire now. I would consider getting a size up. H&m do nursing vest and leggings are good but I do find the Jean sizes small. New look do some long line maternity vest which are fairly. Plus I would say look on the next clearance in the sale as they have lots of different brands.

I’m six months and this is what I’ve got:

2 pairs H&M superstretch black trousers
1 pair mamalicious jeans
3 pairs H&M mama leggings - amazing!
3/4 pairs primark normal tights but sized up
5 x long sleeved tops - H&M/new look
2 x H&M mama conscious vest tops
1 x H&M maternity jumper
5 x seraphine work dresses (mostly via eBay!)
3 x maternity shirts/smart tops - seraphine for work, again eBay
2 x topshop fun dresses for weekends
Maternity coat (gift from friend)
4 x stretchy nursing bras - will be useful for future. Mine from Jojo Maman Bebe and quite cheap
2 x 3packs H&M hipster maternity knickers
1 pack primark black knickers - sized up
2 x maternity pjs - one from H&M and one other

I think I have slightly too much workwear, but I didn’t want to be short or having to wash lots. Most of my normal smart jackets still fit too.

Hope that helps!

Emma Jane sleep bras were really useful. I managed to get a pair of stretchy black jeans by Isabella Oliver from eBay,which o have work to death. Am still in them now 4 weeks after giving birth!
I also found it was more flattering to wear tighter tops, gap were good. H&M and Zara are good for maternity wear too.
Belly bands to cover trousers that don't fit are also really good until you fit into maternity trousers

WonkyDonk87 · 15/12/2018 19:48

I impulsively bought two dresses from ASDA (one black, one grey stripe) and I live in them now. Surprisingly good quality. Be careful not to over-buy jeans - I've needed to go up a size or two as I've reached the 3rd trimester. Comfy bras are ESSENTIAL. Grin

Over-bump pyjama trousers!! They were my absolute essential when I was pregnant the first time! She was born at the end of May and for the last month of pregnancy I wore them outside like regular trousers! (they were black and I think I just about got away with it...). I just wanted to feel comfortable at home and they were really perfect.
Aside from that I basically lived in H&M maternity leggings with long stretchy dress/tops over the top - also mostly H&M. H&M nursing bras (also wore them until I stopped breastfeeding), also sports bras and a multipack of Tesco 'shorts' style knickers in 3 sizes too big (these were amazing too!).
I'm nearly 7 weeks with baby number 2 now and can already feel myself expanding... Time to pull the maternity stash out of the loft!
I'd also second what people have said about jeans, I gained weight on my thighs and found that the mat jeans I had didn't last long. I found it a bit depressing to not fit into the jeans after a few months.
