Security blanket during labour?!

Have changed my name as pretty embarrassed by this! I still have my childhood security blanket (my cot blanket!) and holding it really relaxes me. I sleep with it but also snuggle up on the sofa with it etc. I realise that makes me sound pretty odd but I'm otherwise a perfectly well adjusted, normal adult!!

Is anyone else the same with a blanket, teddy etc?

The reason I've been thinking about it is that I'm 38 weeks now and have been reading lots on how creating the right environment for labour and staying relaxed is really important. For me taking my blanket with me to the hospital would be a big part of that but I'm worried I'll look ridiculous! I wouldn't sit there with it on a ward or anything, just in private in the birthing room.

Surely I can't be the only one and they'd have seen this before?!

You will not give a stuff what you look like during labour. Do what makes you relaxed.

Don't be worried, anything that helps - take it or do it.

if it makes you more comfortable - tucked under your pillow so it's out of sight but you know it's there and can grab at it now and then.

Not odd at all. I would be worried about losing it though. When I was transferred in a hurry from the delivery room to the operating theatre my slippers and pillow from home got left behind and went missing. I never pack anything I wouldn't want to lose.

As embarrassed as I am to admit it I'm the same. And yes, I had my cot blanket with me during both of my labours, I found it very relaxing and reassuring to have it there.

I was worried beforehand that people would think I was mad but honestly nobody batted an eyelid, they really didn't notice as they all had bigger things to worry about.

Good luck with the birth OP.

I have a blankey too 😂

BumbleBerries · 14/12/2018 18:09

Surely the Labour ward is one of the most normal places to have a cot blanket? people will probably assume it's for baby if you're worried what people think (but you shouldn't)

MashNpeas · 14/12/2018 18:09

Definitely take it but make it your birth partners responsibility not to lose it (which is big pressure should you get moved from the room!)

Thanks all, you've made me feel much better! Very good point on losing it though, will make sure DH is on high alert 😁

@BumbleBerries after 33 years it resembles a rag more than a cot blanket so it would look out of place on the ward!

@Bishalisha and @Polpette- glad I'm not the only one! I've always figured there are much worse things to rely on than a blanket Smile

I have a cuddly toy I'm really attached too, I sleep with it every night but I didn't bring it in with me to have my 2!

Polpette · 14/12/2018 18:28

So true. There should be no shame in finding a bit of comfort in life. Take your blanket and be proud!

And as the poster above said, there's no place more normal to have a cot blanket than a maternity ward.

My childhood teddy came to hospital with me!! I didn't find I needed it during labour but when the overwhelming emotion hit after, I was definitely glad it was there!
