Bicornuate uterus?

I was told at my private scan at 8 weeks I had a bicornuate uterus (love heart shaped womb) and I was at a high risk of miscarriage and pre term labour and I'm now classed as a high risk pregnancy. I saw babies heart beat at 145bmp which was so lovely but the worry is always there? Is anyone else going through the same or has been?

Hi OP, congratulations on your pregnancy.

I had a septate uterus, which was successfully removed after having a Hysteroscopic metroplasty in Feb 2017.

Unfortunately I couldn't carry naturally with mine, I never saw a heart beat but I have since gone on to have two healthy pregnancies.

You'll probably be referred to a consultant for extra monitoring, but
I've read lots of success stories of women carrying to term without the need of surgery, and seeing a strong heart beat is a very positive sign of a healthy pregnancy.

I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you have a trouble free pregnancy. Xx

Hi. I have the same thing - currently 9 weeks after two miscarriages. I’ve had loads of tests but the doctor said that the shape of my womb doesn’t necessarily contribute to early miscarriage but there are risks. I got some lovely messages from ladies on here when I panicked about this several weeks ago www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/3425192-Septate-Uterus-positive-stories?noti=1#82667750

Hopefully might help! I wish you all the best with your pregnancy.

I was also told I have a heart-shaped uterus, and currently 37wks without any problems. After some research it seems there’s a huge variation in the severity. You may simply have an arctuate uterus which often gets lumped in with bicornuate uterus. Both look heart shaped but arctuate has less pronounced “horns” and no septum.

None of the doctors I saw seemed to think this was problem (the first one only mentioned it in passing, and not as a diagnosis). During the first scan with my current pregnancy (8wks, different dr) I brought it up and he didn’t seem concerned as the baby implanted lower down, away from the heart part. Said as long as the blood supply was good then it shouldn’t affect the pregnancy.

I was a bit worried during the second half of pregnancy since your uterus is stretched to max limit but didn’t have any issues with pre-term labour/contractions at all. The baby was in a posterior/back to back position until 31 weeks (not ideal for birth) and I was also stressing whether the uterus shape has anything to do with that. Though she’s since spun around so it clearly wasn’t a factor either.

So please try to enjoy your pregnancy! Heart shaped uteruses vary so much in shape and severity that it’s impossible to predict whether they actually cause problems which may happen in a normal uterus as well. Though it doesn’t hurt to have a “high risk” pregnancy...you will get extra peace of mind from the scans and check-ups :).

I have this and have 2 healthy pregnancies. Both my girls were premature but they were big babies so it wasn't a big surprise.
Good luck with your pregnancy.
