Nasty fall in the street - should I get checked out?

Hi all,

Today I fell whilst crosing a road and landed on my hands, knees and stomach. I fell so hard and fast I don't remember actually falling or how I landed (no loss of consciousness - I didn't bang my head!)

My hds are very bruised and Ihave grazes on both knees so I think they took the majority of the impact, but whilst I was lying on the road Inoticed Iwas on my stomach - I'm 15+1 with twins. A gentleman helped me up and I got myself home, very shaken and not too badly hurt but for a few hours I had very mild abdo pain low down. No bleeding. I tried to call my midwife. There was no answer but a recorded message saying to call the hospital but with emergencies only. I didn't know what constitutes an emergency so I didn't call but now I'm worried I've damaged my babies somehow. I'll try to call my midwife again in the morning. What else should I do if there's no answer? Does this constitute an emergency?

Sorry about the typos! My keyboard isn't playing ball tonight!

Just call the maternity assessment unit at your local hospital, they would rather you called every day that not call, especially if you've had a fall and pain. They will tell you to come in if they think necessary and won't if they don't think it's needed. Honestly it's no big deal to call them it's what they are there for. Hope you're ok, sounds like a nasty fall.

babydreamer1 · 13/12/2018 00:04

Oh and don't panic if they tell you to come in, babies are very well protected in there and probably didn't feel a thing!

@babydreamer1 - thank you for your reply. I'll call my midwife first and if there's no answer I'll call the maternity assessment centre.

No problem, don't wait until morning if you have any pain.

Hi I hope you’re ok. My baby is a year old now but the maternity hospital number wasn’t described to me as emergency but more an out of hours situation. In my experience (bleeding and reduced fetal movements) they’d be perfectly happy to talk to you to discuss concerns. You should feel free to call to say hi I don’t know if this is worth calling about but I have symptoms x/accident y and i’m worried. The worst they’ll say is just call your midwife in the morning.

I’m sure you’ll be fine but I remember the anxiety so well, and that was just one in there. Good luck.

Go and get checked, I’m sure it’s fine but you’ll feel better if you do. At around 20 weeks pregnant with me, my mum fell down some slippery steps in the snow and landed on her stomach (well, on me!) My grandad was with her and insisted she went to the hospital even though she wasn’t sure, and the midwife said that they’d always rather people came in after anything like that, just in case.

Also, if you’re RHNeg you may need the Anti D, even if you didn’t have a bleed as any knock to the stomach that causes or leaves bruising is considered serious enough to warrant the injection.

If you are worried don’t wait for the community midwife. In our area it is drummed in to us to call triage as most of the time the midwives won’t have access to their phones and won’t be able to get back to you quickly.

Are you rhesus negative? If so, mention that.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I finally got hold of a midwife this afternoon. She said I would need a scan and told me to ring the 24 hour maternity assessment unit. I rang the MAU and they told me they a) don't see people before 16 weeks even though I am carrying twins and that b) the babies would be well protected from a bang to the stomach. She said if I have any further concerns I can ring them back.

Confused? Me too.
