If you had HG during your first pregnancy, did you have it again in subsequent ones?

And if you did, was it the same, milder, or more severe than the first time, the second time around? And what about if you had more than 2 children?

Sorry but yes, unfortunately it was almost exactly the same with both and lasted almost exactly as long. Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear :(

TerriB84 · 12/12/2018 22:35

I personally didn’t suffer from
HG but a work colleague of mine did with both of her pregnancies and she said it was worse second time around. Again probably not what you were hoping to hear.

TickleMeEmo · 12/12/2018 22:38

I did first and second pregnancies, but only had mild nausea in the 3rd and what I’d describe as normal levels of sickness and nausea with the 4th

TwistedStitch · 12/12/2018 22:39

Yes I had awful HG in my first pregnancy. My second one, over 6 years later, I had it even worse (which I hadn't believed was possible) and for the whole 40 weeks. I won't be having a third!

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2018 22:39

I am afraid so.

MrsBungle · 12/12/2018 22:41

Yes I had it both times but my second was a lot better with far fewer hospitalisations as I was put on to ondansetron from week 6 second time.

Pinkkahori · 12/12/2018 22:43

I suffered both times. The first time was relentless. I only had a few weeks out of the 40 that I wasn't actively being sick constantly.
The second time round it was actually more intense but that time I suddenly stopped being sick at around 16 weeks and it didn't return til about 37 weeks so in that way it was much better.

lunar1 · 12/12/2018 22:44

Wasn't as bad with my second, though I did have enough money saved that I could have got a live in nanny if it had been.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 12/12/2018 22:47

Yes. Worse second time round. Put me off having a third as I can't do it again!

CocoLoco87 · 12/12/2018 22:51

I had it both times but second was worse because I had a toddler to look after too, and I simply couldn't look after him. So that brought a lot of guilt with it and I had quite bad pre-natal depression. Just something to watch out for. I had a strong network of help around me but I felt awful for not being able to do anything myself. My son was around 15 months -2 yrs during it, and he doesn't remember me being a useless mum Smile

Currently 35w with my second and it has been worse this time around. ALTHOUGH, partially offset by getting medicated earlier (so the first tri was not so catastrophic). Having a small child at home definitely doesn’t help as tiredness makes it worse for me. But am totally fed up and even if I was inclined to have a third I don’t think I could struggle through another HG oregnancy. Sorry...:

MeadowHay · 13/12/2018 10:11

Kate It's ok, I've read that research indicates you generally do have it with subsequent pregnancies and it can often (usually?) be worse, but was wondering how many people don't or whatever. The only person in my family who had it was my paternal aunt who only had it with her 2nd pregnancy (no more children after that).

Thanks - so mostly in line with the research and how I expected. Blerghhh. I'm thinking it would be easier to deal with if DD was at least school age than with a baby/toddler at home, although I'm not a SAHM - so I guess it would be harder for SAHMs/single parents, because if I took a lot of sick leave from work she'd be in childcare while I'd be at home ill anyway so not like I'd have to look after her all day and DH would be around evenings and weekends. Just with my career plans I need either a short gap - she's 5 months now, so next baby would need to be born no later than spring 2020, EEK - or the gap would be 6+ years, which is a bit bigger than ideally I'd like - wanted 3-5yr gap but not really feasible unless I delay my career aspirations significantly. I would have a lot of support - DH is great, and my parents and DB live 5 mins walk and would help a lot, but I also wonder how fair it is to knowingly have a baby knowing I will need a lot of help from DM while I'm sick during pregnancy when the other option is waiting til DD is a lot older and then I'd need less help, iyswim.

I had awful hg in my first pregnancy, didn’t have it in my second, but did again with my third.

53rdWay · 13/12/2018 10:22

I had above-averagely bad sickness in subsequent pregnancies but still so much better than the HG. I think starting medications earlier made a difference with mine.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 13/12/2018 10:24

Yes I did and this time (currently pregnant with baby 2) it has just been worse.

It has put me off having anymore after this.

allthingsred · 13/12/2018 10:24

Yes had hg during my first 3 pregnancies (all girls) nothing with my 4th (a boy )

Mamabearx4 · 13/12/2018 10:26

Sorry but yes , first 2 ended around 4 months. Last one not as bad but lasted throughout

Bellebp · 14/12/2018 08:02

Yes, three pregnancies (all girls), much worse each time. The last one was unspeakably awful, prob made worse as I already had 2 under 2! Lasted until around 22w or perhaps a bit later. It got to the point where even standing up was a major event that made me wish I was dead.

All the best. Hopefully it’ll be better for you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2018 10:15

Unfortunately yes, although with ds1 it was acute and lasted til about 16 wks. With ds2 it was milder and lasted the whole time until he was born. Not sure which was worse! I managed it better second time round, for example I knew I had to eat and drink so I forced myself and this made me feel better in the long run. I was never sick though, only ever extreme nausea/chemically seasick feeling.

Littledinosaur · 14/12/2018 17:27

With Ds1 I has it until 26 weeks & it was awful, with ds2 I was put on anti sickness meds as soon as I found out I was pregnant & it was slightly milder and lasted until 16 weeks. Not sure if it was starting the meds early or just luck.
