I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.

Hello all, I am most likely going to be rejoining this thread after having my DD back in December 2016. I have only just missed my period so very early days here and so far not feeling too bad (heartburn and a bitter taste in my mouth) but my HG didn't kick in until 6 weeks last time and I'm looking for advice on how to manage HG with a toddler.

My HG lasted until the day after my DD was born last time and I tried cyclizine, metocropmalide (sp?) and lastly ordansetron but we could never seem to get completely on top of it. Do others have experience of starting anti emetics as more of a preventive measure?

I hope you are all managing ok!

eallison88 · 01/01/2019 14:27

happydays get yourself to GP as soon as possible and start on meds. The guidelines recommend pre-emptive. If those 3 last time, did you ever have a combination of just one at a time?

silversplodge · 01/01/2019 16:46

lucinda I am up and down, thanks for asking. Still end up in bed every afternoon feeling awful, briefly get up to try dinner then back in bed for the night by 8pm, but mornings are much better than they were so I must remember and be thankful for that. Also that I don't have other kids so am able to do that.
Work are trying to push me to extend my phased return to afternoons as well as mornings, I don't think they believe me that I drive home and go straight to bed.

DeadDoorpost · 01/01/2019 18:23

I'll be contacting my GP on Thursday when I'm back home in prep of HG as last time I was sick from 6 weeks onwards and would rather be prepared especially with a house move.

I also didn't bother with vitamins last pregnancy but might try the pregnacare oral medicine as I really like the taste of that.... hmmmm orange.

And to top it off I've just done a 3rd test and this time it's really not a squinter. Clear as day. Had thought it might not show because ive been cramping but that could just be my uterus moving.

Lucinda I'll be due about early September if you still do the due date list. Actually can't wait to tell people to get it out of the way. But holding out until the move.

Kleino83 · 01/01/2019 19:01

Hi all
Those on ranitidine how long can you take it for? I ended up in hospital yet again and the consultant put me on that but I am sure she said I can only take it for 2 weeks?? Am then thinking what do I take in place of it after that?
I am still on Ondansetron and have taken myself off Stemetil as I actually think it was making me feel nauseous so in place of that I have gone back on cyclizine. Will see if that helps....
The nausea and acid are just never ending.

beanhunter · 01/01/2019 19:17

I’ve been taking it since 11 weeks - now 25 and no one has tried to stop me.

Kleino83 · 01/01/2019 19:44

Thanks beanhunter

eallison88 · 01/01/2019 19:59

kleino No one has mentioned a time monitor ranitidine to me that I can think of. Ive been taking it for a couple of months now.

Big family party today with in laws. 9 kids (4months-12years) and 8 grown ups. Im glad i went, tho i was dreading it. A few careless decisions were made about food, but thoughtlessness rather than meanness. I had a nap for an hour at 4 (with my 9 month old niece!). We do a secret Santa amongst grown ups, and my BIL bought me an activity book for pregnant people... flicking through it and found the page in the photo attached. Made my chuckle outloud and think of you guys!!

WeeBean · 01/01/2019 20:18

Eal I'm pretty sure that's the exact same book my DH got me for my birthday, I had a wee laugh flicking through it too.

DH woke me up from a nap last night as requested to see in the New Year, I spent 10 minutes watching the countdown and fireworks before making a run for the toilet to throw up. While I threw up DH (with a few gins in him) sang Auld Lang Sang to the cats in the next room, I had to laugh (after i'd finished) at the ridiculousness of the situation, hope it gives you ladies a bit of a giggle too.

Here's hoping the start of 2019 is better than the end of 2018 for us all and the sickness and nausea shifts asap! At least we can say this is the year we get to meet our babies!

MrsB19 · 01/01/2019 20:27

Hope you’re all coping okay! I just wondered if anyone’s HG got worse around 12/13 weeks? I’m 13 tomorrow and ten days ago I was given stemetil along with my ondansetron. That did make some improvements for about a week, but seems to have gone rapidly downhill, I’ve now had three days bed bound feeling awful and being sick (but not as often as before). I’ve got a call with my GP tomorrow about my progress and whether I’m fit to work, but just not sure if this rapid decline around this time is normal! I’ve had good days and bad days throughout, but since meds it’s been a bit steadier. Just wondering if anyone else experienced the same? Sorry for the ramble and thank you in advance! X

LucindaE · 01/01/2019 20:29

Happy New Year, everyone - anyway, as happy as you can manage.
happydays00 Welcome back. As others say, do go for pre-emptive meds. A neurological relfex makes repeated vomiting a pattern it is difficult to get out of, it seems. Have you got any friends/relatives/nursery plans to help with LO? As you are a veteran you don't need my 'have you got kesostix' spiel and the one about 'flat full sugar coke, the juice of tinned fruit and ice lollies'. I hope you escape gettiing it again.
Reastie Intriguing about spray vitamins.
eallison Sorry things feel grim at the moment. It is natural to feel fed up about not having a glow. SadIt isn't fair. You always give such excellent advice, despite that. I am glad the party was OK. That image is grimly funny Grin.
canonlyhope Good advice from Reastie and eallison about the spray vitmamins or liquid ones.
Kleino Sorry about hospitalisation. I never heard that there was any sort of time limit on Ranitidine; as others say, many on here are on it for months.
Olivecake That is interesting about non dairy yoghurt. I can see that might be good in the same way as non dairy milkshakes.
silversplodge Sorry that work are pushing you to increase hours. I hope you manage to fend them off.
DeadDoorPost I have added you. It is good you will be near family.

MrsB19 I was on that combo and it was working ok. Still was nauseous and the acid was bad, then out the blue had a day where I couldn’t keep a thing down so ended up in hospital. I found after taking Stemetil an hour or so later I felt rubbish so I have stopped it and taking Ondansetron and cyclizine as a new combo to see if that helps. And yes for me week 12 hasn’t been great. I had two days which were ok-ish but then generally have felt rubbish. I am really hoping this resolves at 16 weeks like last time but right now it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel...

Thanks for the replies re ranitidine. Will try get more clarification as I don’t want to stop an antiacid unless it is resolved!

Reastie · 02/01/2019 07:47

I found week 12 a bad week too. It was starting to become a bit more variable but when it was bad it was worse than before.

I haven’t posted much of an update recently as I’ve been too scared to jinx things (which I know is silly) but there has been a bit of an improvement for me now at 15 weeks. I hope now I write that i don’t have awful days again! I still find I can’t do anything and have to lie down a lot and rest etc and evenings are still mostly bad but touch wood the last week hasn’t been as constant as before. I need to start building things up so I can actually go out but so far all attempts to do that has led to it recurring. Mrsb I hope this gives you hope that you hopefully are near a better point. Compared to most pg it’d still be classed as bad and medication is still needed but compared to a month ago I feel stronger.

eallison88 · 02/01/2019 09:49

Just had another fabulous appointment with my GP. Went to him to ask if he would be happy to prescribe and help me manage the steroids, save me going to the hospital every 2 weeks for the repeat prescription. He was just fab, completely happy to do so, prescribed me a months worth, and put it on repeat. He gave me a few tips on how to reduce the steroids. Prescribed me calcium tablets as a preventative for the potential bone thinning, and wants me to go back after baby arrives and he will refer me for a scan to check any bone thinning. And all through it he completely acknowledges that this is all completely new to him. He has gone above and beyond so many times in this pregnancy to support me and implement things that consultants have started. He also said to me this morning "unfortunately for you, you are a unique case".

reastie I'm so glad you're starting to have better days.

Reastie · 02/01/2019 10:17

Eal that’s fantastic, it must be a huge weight off your mind. It’s so good when you have a medical professional prepared to extend their knowledge to help rather than just stick with saying no.

Feeling a bit wobbly as emailed lovely gp for extension of sick note last week (when she asked me to as she’s off in January quite a bit and wanted to do it before she went off). Dh just been to surgery and it hasn’t been done yet which might mean she’s gone on leave and it hasn’t been done before she’s gone. I need a note to start from Friday and they are telling me to call tomorrow which is a day before I’m back and cutting it fine for telling work and I’m really nervous about getting one from another doctor who doesn’t know the case or the situ (let alone getting an appointment in time). Please tell me I’m needlessly worrying?!

eallison88 · 02/01/2019 10:27

reastie in my experience, most GPs are happy to extend a sick note that's in place, especially for something like HG. They can also backdated if needs be, so just tell work you won't be back and you can sort the note in due course.

MrsB19 · 02/01/2019 10:34

Kleino83- thank you for your message. It’s really useful to hear other experiences. I’ve caught up with my GP today and she’s swapping stemetil for cyclizine, like you, and given me another weeks’ sick note to see how it works. I’m really hoping I’ll start to feel better soon, it feels like it’s gone on forever and it’s only been 6 weeks! Hoping your combination works for you too.

Reastie- thank you, I’m so glad to hear your starting to have more good days and there is a light at the end of the tunnel! It is strange as the nausea definitely feels worse than before Christmas, i was hoping it would be on a steady improvement, but clearly not! I hope your good spell continues and becomes a permanent improvement. I’m 13 weeks today and we’ve got our 12 week scan later, so I’m hoping seeing our little one will give me a happy boost for a few days at least- even if I’m stuck in bed!

Ksjourney · 02/01/2019 11:19

Firstly HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE :)

So I am still feeling nauseous (bleugh) and can't drop any meds as Nausea gets unbearable. I'm sure it was all over by this point with DD!!!!!! Not being sick which is good but exhausted and nauseous. Plus still struggling to drink enough fluids as fluids make me feel icky. Anyway just a general moan as I was planning to be glowing and growing and getting my shit together after checking out of life for 3/4 months....

Thanks for giving me a place to whine - my family are bored of listening to me and seem to think I am better (and I am) just not quite back to firing on all engines...

@WeeBean never say never my DD is 6 and it took me this long to face it again and I am already talking to DH about just getting one more out of the way in 2-3 years time. I couldn't do it sooner as I can not imagine having this fo so long and having a baby. Reastie and Eal gave good advice and I am also holding onto the many months ahead vs how long I'm pregnant for.

Hoping you all are having better days today

Hairgician · 02/01/2019 11:32

Happy new year everyone!!
Rough day today. Nothing staying down. Infact fighting the urge to vom as i type this. Waiting on gp ringing back. Hoping to be seen today for more meds.
Not had a proper meal since boxing day and starting to feel it now. And here i was hoping i wouldnt have it again this time around.

beanhunter · 02/01/2019 12:08

Bad day and night at work and feeling grotty today and have the small one to occupy. Thankfully my awesome friend has taken her ice skating so I’m just sitting in the cafe but frankly even being out of bed feels a massive effort today and the smell of the food not great. I have to somehow be functional for work tomorrow. I’m def a lot better than I was at my worst but still vomiting at least 4 times every day and any nights with bad sleep make everything worse. I really thought I’d be better by now (25 weeks). I am wishing time to go faster.

SassehMonsta · 02/01/2019 12:37

Attempted to check in last week, but my post went awol. almost 19 weeks and down to one or 2 ondansetron a day, nothing else. That's just for nausea too!

I keep blocking the loo at home with monster poos. DH is fed up as I made him sort it last time round - I sort everyone elses crap!

Combining the diabetes with the HG and I am pretty fed up of this pregnancy, so cant wait until next week when we find out the gender!

Sending all my love.

Hairgician · 02/01/2019 12:41

Gp appt later so going to try and nap then get a shower. Gp has asked that i bring a urine sample. That shall be fun. Tried eating a bit of shortbread. Not a good idea. I shall be seeing it again very shortly.

SeaEagleFeather · 02/01/2019 18:27

Happy New Year everyone!

reasti very good to hear that you're getting some good days now :)

ealli glad your GP is so supportive. calcium tablets are a great idea. Sadly I lost several teeth thanks to the pregs :/

Wishing everyone a quiet evening

eallison88 · 02/01/2019 22:48

Just put tomorrow's pills in the old person pill tray (I love it). Current daily pill count = 26. This is cos pharmacist gave me 8mg ondansetron tabs rather than 4mg, so that knocks 3 out a day. And i finish my antibiotics on Friday, so that'll drop another 3. But seriously. The calcium tabs have to be chewed. And are described as "tutti frutti" flavoured. Not tried those yet. Think I might crush them and eat them with a biscuit or something.

Sleep well all. hairgician I hope doc apt went well

Hairgician · 02/01/2019 23:36

So ive been admitted for fluids. Still not eaten yet. Im hungry but the vommy urge still coming and going.
And told we are having twins!!! Had an inkling as when i tested positive i used a cb digi few days after and showed as 3+ when should have been saying 1-2.
So that will be 3 under 2 come august!
