Mulled wine

So I'm not a big drinker but we traditionally always have a mulled wine with friends on our annual Christmas meet up and if I turn down another drink in front of them as I have been over the last 6 weeks, they are going to ask me if I'm pregnant again and despite being 10 week plus I'm not ready to tell, mainly as I know 2 of my friends are going through a rough time and starting ivf soon and I don't want to drop it on them and make it all about me this Christmas. Anyway I'm wondering if I can have a glass of mulled wine? It'll remove suspicion I'm feeling from them and as it's heated will it be so bad? I don't drink anything else ever right now x

Accept the glass but don't drink it? Or just take a couple of tiny sips if you see anyone watching.

Or could you be having to drive later? Elderly relative not feeling well and you want to be sober in case you need to drive to him/her at short notice?

Or just say you've got a sore throat and everything tastes funny, but you'd love a cup of tea instead?

Yes, it will. You have to really boil things for a long time to significantly reduced the alcohol content. If you are happy having a glass of wine, and some are, then go for it, but don't kid yourself that it'll be less alcohol. If it's such an issue for you not to tell, you can just invent a mouth ulcer that means you don't want citrus or spices or something.

It would be easy enough to take a glass and then just take a sip or two, which isn't a problem, and then just don't have any more. Unless you have really attentive friends who might actually watch what you drink then you should be fine.

No one will be monitoring your drinking.

What you do is accept a glass and just wander round the party holding it and occasionally lifting it to your mouth. Stand/sit next to your DH and quietly exchange classes.

If it’s a party with lots of people it’s even easier, “lose” your glass occasionally.

Mulled wine is still alcoholic - it's only heated, not boiled enough to cook off the alcohol.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 07/12/2018 17:30

Mulled wine is only heated, so the alcohol is not cooked off - and I've found that a lot of people add more than just wine (brandy, rum, cognac and similar), so depending on who makes it, it can be stronger than you might expect.

Most ready prepared mulled wines are much lower than regular wine, so it depends really if it's made of pre-prepared how strong it will be.

Thanks all, I'll accept it and drink minimal amount and lose it in the loo. There's not many of us that attend and I've already been asked when I made myself the driver twice recently, I'm not a big drinker usually but I certainly enjoy a few on special occasions (when I'm not pregnant) and those around me that are ttc pick up on so much, many have been falsely questioned. I know it probably sounds like I'm being paranoid but I hate lying but I don't want to drink either I certainly wouldn't take any real risks, I'm just wondering if such a small amount is an issue? They used to say limit alcohol with my previous pregnancy as my husband reminded me but I never drank then either. I guess I know lots will feel differently. Thanks for the replies. X
