Likelihood of girl/boy

I wasn't entirely sure where to post this and also how completely stupid it probably sounds but is there any sort of percentages on couples having perhaps a boy or girl?
Let me explain as I'm struggling here. For example...
Myself and my DH have a young girl and he has a girl from a previous relationship
My maternal grandparents had all girls, my paternal grandparents had all girls but my dad. My DH parents had lots of girls and his grandparents also had all girls but one boy...
Does that pretty much write my family for me...is it most likely we'll have girls in the future.
Massive apologies for my lack of way with words 😂

Short answer it's a 50/50 chance of being a boy or girl.

Long answer: females produce eggs that are only "female" so the sex of a baby depends on the sperm either being female chromosome or male chromosome.

Studies show that male sperm are faster than female sperm at getting to an egg, so should you have unprotected sex on date of ovulation (or very close too) it's probably a higher chance of being a boy.

HOWEVER, even though female sperm are slower studies also show they can survive longer so should you have unprotected sex a few days before ovulation then you might have a higher chance of having a girl.

Though all this isn't 100% reliable... also, it's sometimes said some women can only carry one sex (either boys or girls) - not sure how reliable this is mind...

Hope this helps a little 😂😂😂

@FlowerPowerBecky
That is exactly the sort of answer I was after! Thank you. Our baby is a surprise therefore completely unsure whether I was ovulating when conceived 😆 I'm glad you understood what it was I was asking because re-reading it I'm not sure I even understood what I'd written

As long as baby is healthy then we don't care what sex it is but I'm sure by my question someone is bound to take it the wrong way and accuse me of not wanting another girl!

I already have a boy and baby due May was conceived on or around ovulation, so following that theory should be another boy. I find out on 21st

Doyoumind · 05/12/2018 20:54

I'm sure I heard about a study that said that a man being stressed slightly increased the chance of a girl.

@figelnarage please please get back to us and let us know!

My maternal and paternal grandparents had a lot more girls. My mum and dad's side of family probably an equal mix. My generation of women are having boys by the majorty so far.

But the as PP said its determined by DHs sperm so still 50:50 🤣

I conceived day before or day of ovulation so will see in 16 weeks if we have another boy Grin

kindnessreins · 05/12/2018 21:04

@Doyoumind If my DH was anymore laid back he'd be horizontal 😂 probably another girl for us. Also we were on holiday at the time of conception so even less stressed

There are so many theories about this it's really interesting! I have read that if the mother orgasms during the intercourse that results in the conception, it is more likely a girl as the pH balance of the vagina changes and is more favourable to female speed. Not sure how true that is!

needanappp · 05/12/2018 21:27

Female sperm * not speed haha

kindnessreins · 05/12/2018 21:38

@needanappp I think it's time for your nap sweetheart 😂

Hahaha I think so!!

I love all this. It is really interesting and I want to believe that there is a theory and a truth to it all. And then sometimes it all gets thrown out the window because the theory fails at some point and I think ‘nah it’s all chance and 50/50’.

Having said that, I know 2 families who have only produced boys for 3 generations. And that’s 3 siblings minimum in each generation.
But one of theirs families has just had their first girl a year ago.

My DH family have all produced one of each in our generation and the one above.
We are only on our first though and the last couple yet to finish our family.
Will be interesting to see if we have a girl next time (though couldn’t really care less if we didn’t)
I’m pregnant with a boy and he was definitely conceived right around ovulation.

I think the government should spend tons of money on this in experiments just to satisfy my need to know 😂 x

figelnarage · 08/12/2018 00:21

I will do OP. I posted a pic of the scan on another thread about nub theory and most people said boy.

figelnarage · 21/12/2018 17:47

It's a boy 💙

FlowerPowerBecky · 21/12/2018 18:09

YAY! Congrats 💙😁

figelnarage · 22/12/2018 13:01

Thank you.

Looks like in my case both Nub Theory and the Shettles method are 'proven'.
