Fetal Medical Consultant - should I be worried?

Hi guys.

I had the screening for downs, Edwards and Pataus. The scan results were CRL - 60.2mm
Screening for Tr21 and Tr13/18 - 2.70mm, which they said wasn’t anything to worry about? However my bloods came back high risk for all 3.

1 in 110 for downs and 1 in 130 for Edwards. I have decided until the next scan I won’t take any further action as I was told by the midwife I was at a higher risk of miscarriage due to previous miscarriages etc. However, I got a call this evening from the midwife advising they’ve booked me in for an extra scan at 16 weeks with a Fetal medical consultant, which has now worried me that they have found something on the 12 week scan and didn’t tell me? Any help, comments and advise welcome!

Hi - I was 1:85 for downs and ended up having CVS - even though it came back all clear I had 16 week and 20 week appointments at fetal medicine unit - I think they do this as a routine. It’s actually good because they spend far longer on the scans than normal so you get to see your baby much more! 😊 hope that puts your mind at rest xxxxx

@le42 thank you for you response. This is my first pregnancy that I have got further than 12 weeks so I am very nervous as you can probably tell. But keeping everything crossed thank you x

FlowersTry to imagine a room with 110 children in it. Only one of them with one of the conditions you're increased risk for. I'd really recommend the nifty test or the harmony if you can afford it. I was 1:40 for downs and my friend was 1:60 for Edwards/ Patau. Nothing had nifty/ harmony test and both were fine. Totally non invasive and no risk to baby X not cheap though

Kayleigh121 · 05/12/2018 19:27

Hi @MerryGinmas thank you for your response, I had this look on the both of them which is why I decided not to go forward with any further testing. I guess after this scan in a couple of weeks I can decide further and in which case I will pay for the testing that’s needed.

Thank you again x

Hi sorry to hear you’re going through this. Have you looked into having a NIPT?

Kayleigh121 · 06/12/2018 09:22

Any other advise?

TBH in your situation I'd get the NIPT (its what I'd always said I would do if anything came back high risk). Non-invasive blood testing and make a decision from there. Yes its expensive but you'll be better informed to make decisions.

It would be the Patau's and Edward's I'd be most concerned about as they are generally not compatible with life so it would need some serious decisions making and I'd rather have the information to do that earlier.

bengalcat · 06/12/2018 09:57

If you can afford and access the NIPT test it's more accurate than the standard nuchal and blood testing with a lower false positive rate . There isn't anything they've seen at 12 weeks on scan and kept from you . The 16 week scan with a fetal medicine consultant is to take an earlier look at your baby as she / he develops . Good luck .

Littlebelina · 06/12/2018 09:59

The extra scan is just due to your high risk result. If your baby has pataus or Edwards there will almost certainly be abnormalities that can be spotted on a scan at 16weeks by an experienced fetal medicine doctor (there maybe markers for downs that can be seen as well). Having the extra scan at 16 weeks will give your more options\time to decide than if you just waited until 20 weeks.

I think it is standard if you have a high risk result. It's not because they are hiding anything from you (if they had seen anything they would bring you back sooner given that the bloods were high risk).

The odds are still in your favour so try not to worry too much. Easier said that done though

Thanks everybody. I was more worried about the scan but after thinking I’m glad they’re offering a 16 week scan just in case. If anything does come back I will 100% have the tests they recommend and even pay for the tests privately if needed.

Thanks for all of your advice during this stressful time. Didn’t go ahead with any extra testing but did have the scan today and everything looked normal thankfully!
