DDP Yoga - does anyone do this in pregnancy?

I'm not sure if anyone even knows what this is - I had no idea until my husband started doing it - or whether it is safe to continue in pregnancy.

Its not Bikram or Hot Yoga, it just uses a lot of dynamic resistance..

Do you think its ok to do?

Hi,

There are a lot of modifications needed to continue a yoga practice in pregnancy regardless of the style. Many yoga teachers are not qualified in pregnancy (it's not taught as part of their core training) so they won't always know when to offer you modifications. This doesn't mean you HAVE TO stop... but you do need to be mindful and research well.

As a general rule avoid:

  • Planks/Chaturanga/boat/core work
  • Anything on your stomach is a big no
  • Deep back bends
  • Twisting unless it's an open twist (if you're in doubt don't do it)
  • For anything standing where legs are supposed to be together take a wider stance
  • Forwards folds get a lot harder with your bump so you'll need to modify to make space
  • You'll likely want a shorter stride in any standing positions
  • And re breathe work... not sure if you do this in your classes but no holding of the breath or anything pumping the stomach... keep a steady breath.

Sorry! Too much info 😂 my mum is a yoga teacher and I was about to do my training before I got pregnant

LL82 · 05/12/2018 18:11

I’m 25 weeks pregnant and do iyengar yoga. I stopped when I got pregnant until about 20 weeks. My teacher is pregnant too which helps! IF they are a good teacher they will know how to guide you safely through a class!

@LL82 @le42

Thank you for your help! I don't want to jeopardise anything so I'll stick to being a slob 😂😂😂😂

I’ve done various types of yoga and DDP yoga is quite ‘powerful’. Having just tried two different pregnancy yoga classes and how different they are, I’d steer clear of DDP! It is great when you’re not pregnant though!

Just to add I went to a specific pregnancy yoga class and loved it; however it was very different to yoga classes I’ve been to when not pregnant so I’d recommend finding a specific pregnancy one

If you have a regular yoga practice you’ll find pregnancy yoga incredibly gentle but it’s nice for the relaxation element and meeting mums!

This has helped me I used to go to Hotpod Yoga and wanted to go back but I think I'll give it a miss and maybe try pregnancy yoga.

Angelmiracle · 05/12/2018 21:26

Yes I agree. Im going pregnancy Pilates and it is well adapted from the regular class!

JustMe18 · 06/12/2018 07:02

Thank you everyone!! I didn't realise the difference 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

If you've got an experienced teacher ask them. You should be able to continue with modifications particularly if you're used to yoga. It's so good for your wellbeing too

mrsjackrussell · 06/12/2018 11:58

Sorry just noticed its ddp yoga. Iv no experience of this as I do Iyengar yoga
