Confused about baby's position

I'm 32 weeks with my first baby and the midwife thinks it's breech. However, I'm feeling the hard lump of baby's head (I assume) to the right of my belly button rather than under my ribs. Somehow that doesn't seem big enough for 32 weeks? The top of my bump feels quite empty and I'm getting some movements in my left hip, which I'm taking to be feet but unsure... Any thoughts or anyone else been in this position? Bump measurement is normal.

Could be baby's bottom?

secretnutter · 04/12/2018 10:13

I found it difficult to tell which was bottom or head with my two, the midwife obviously did too as with my first I had an undiagnosed breech!!
You'd need a scan to be sure, I requested one when I went into labour with second as I was paranoid! The hospital were very happy to do one & it put my mind at ease.

Mine was suspected breach around 32 weeks. Could feel a constant bump to one side and the occasional other bump to the other side. Was sent for a scan to confirm which showed baby tucked in my pelvis (I could feel the kicks towards my hip iyswim), I believe they called it transverse breech or something along those lines - baby was sideways.
After a few weeks I was sent for a re scan to see if the position had changed and it did. Baby could no longer fit in my pelvis and had to move Grin

There is a really good guide to determining the position of your baby. My baby was breech and I often mistook a hard bum for a head. spinningbabies.com/learn-more/baby-positions/belly-mapping/

I’ve never been able to distinguish between the bum and head!

RiddleyW · 04/12/2018 12:14

I spent weeks stroking what I thought was DS’ head and turned out it was his bum.

AliCanTea · 04/12/2018 17:07

Thank you - it's comforting it could be the bum! Do you think I could ask for a scan to check size/position at this stage? Not sure if the NHS would offer it until later.

Are there concerns about growth from midwife? Still plenty of time for baby to turn (IF breech). You could get a private scan for less than £100.

Based on what you've told us so far, there is no need for a scan.

My midwife suspected breech at around 36/37 weeks. They sent me to the hospital for an emergency scan later that afternoon. Turns out, baby had dropped down quite far and what she had been feeling was my daughter's bottom. Have they referred you for further scans/investigation? If not, I don't think they are very worried at this point.

AliCanTea · 04/12/2018 18:26

No - they don't seem worried at all - just me wondering where the rest of the baby is if the head is in the middle! Thanks for reassurance.
