Worried after six week scan -gestational sac but no yolk sac or embryo.

Have one healthy ds but have since had two mc in a row. Now pg again and had a six week scan for this reason yesturday and saw a gestational sac but with nothing inside. Sonographer said it was fine and what they would expect from a 'very early pregnancy' and to come back in two weeks for another one.
However I was expecting to see yolk sac by six weeks and most likely embryo and possibly heartbeat. I am confused that according to her everything is fine but it does not seem fine to me. She put in my notes that I am consistent with a 4-5 week pregancy but I know I should around six weeks as I am pretty sure give or take a day or two, when I ovulated. I only read the notes after I left so I had no chance to ask her if this date difference was a bad sign or not.
In a way having a scan at this stage has made me even more anxious and confused.

Has anyone else had similar experience with early scans?

Taichimum - thank you so much for starting this thread. I'm pregnant for the first time. Had a 6 week +5 scan yesterday, because I conceived v unexpectedly - was supposed to have IVF, but it was postponed due to ovarian cyst - then conceived naturally! Sonographer said she could see the gestational sac and yolk, but no heartbeat and embryo is "very small". She said in no uncertain terms that the heartbeat should be visable by now, but that I should come back in a week. I left feeling v despondant, so was really heartened to hear that its not so unusual. Now just have to get through the next interminable week with my fingers crossed.

dear all - have just discovered thread and it is REALLY useful. had m/c on 22 may - totally unexpectedly we conceived straight afterwards, got a positive pg test at beg july. needed a scan to date the pg so had one on where they found sac in the right place but nothing in there and size was right for 5+3. they also did blood hormone tests - instead of doubling every 2 days, my hormone counts have dropped from 7000 to 6000 and then stabilised. so did another scan a week later and it looked like 6 weeks - sac had grown and something v small inside, but still no heartbeat. going back end of this week for another scan - nurse said we'd know either way, but it sounds as though people don't know sometimes until 8+. has anyone had any experience with hormone levels dropping, not doubling every 2 days? am obviously worried this is a mm/c, and although i'm finding this thread incredibly hopeful and positive, i'm scared i'm looking for the positive things and ignoring the enormous negative of dropping hormone levels.

When I had my booking scan at 7 weeks they saw a "hypoechoic" area ? bleed (taken from notes). I to had two previous miscarriages and began to panic. I had a small brown loss at about 11 weeks which they said was probably that bleed coming out. Baby was fine tho. Am now 39 weeks and waiting to see the bundle of trouble.

I know it is easier said than done but you really need to try and relax. The first 12 weeks felt like 12 months to me. I enjoyed my pregnancy with DD but I have hated this one as I panic at any weird sign.

peanutbear · 21/07/2007 09:47

I had an early scan and this all I saw too they said it was to early to see anything else

I have a DD now though after the two weeks of panic there was the heartbeat

RavenclAwen · 21/07/2007 11:00

taicimum - i had an area of bleeding on scan around similar dates to you (also had a ealry one same, showing sac and no yolk etc) now nearly 17 weeks and last scan at 13+ weeks and all is ok.

hi all, I was a previous lurker but wanted to post given reading your stories has kept me going through this difficult period. I'm 36, have been ttc 2 years, had 2mc, and now on 8th week after IVF. Had my first scan about a week ago, doctor saw embryo and heartbeat, but no yolk sac. I was told without the yolk sac the pregnancy is not viable. We will find out tomorrow evening and are hoping to God that everything will be fine. I have bigger boobs, nausea since 1 wk, and on-off spotting but other than that no symptoms. I'm on progesterone 3x a day, so the fact that we have not mc yet could be due to the progesterone i'm taking artificially. All the best to all of you and thank you for sharing your stories

Hi Gemerama, yes, its an old thread but gave me comfort. I hope other women like you and I can benefit from their and our experiences too.

I've been to the doctor and the scan showed all is fine. He just confirmed that its sometimes too early to see everything, so I hope that gives you and everyone reassurance.
I'm now entering week 9 and in week 10 will do the Harmony prenatal test to find out my risk of Down syndrome.
All the best to you Gemerama!

HopefulSmile14 · 16/03/2015 14:52

I had this when I went at 6 weeks 3 days they had to do a internal scan which then picked up baby and heartbeat which they said had started around 5weeks did they just give you a tummy scan?

Worrybunny1 · 16/03/2015 19:18

It was a vaginal scan... The doctor was slightly worried but like I said a week later it just appeares out of nowhere. So I guess iall these scares can happen early on.

HopefulSmile14 · 16/03/2015 22:57

Just keep positivity up and believe in your body after my experiences this pregnancy I'm trusting my body to do the job

Homeboddy49 · 17/03/2015 09:47

Hello ladies. It is so great reading all these posts. I have not stopped worrying and thinking the worse since last Thursday when I had some slight spotting. I went to my GP because I had a mc in November and I had a scan yesterday at what I thought was 6+1.
The scan was inconclusive, they could see a ingestation sac but nothing else but said this could be because it's too early and I have ovulated late. They also made me worry ten times more then before I went in as they couldn't rule out an Eptopic. I didn't find them very supportive at all. I had a blood test for Hcg levels and I'm going back Wednesday for another test and I will find out the results Wednesday afternoon.
I'm so confused as I have full on pregnancy symptoms so I can't understand why they can't see much on the scan. I have had a lot of nausea which I wouldn't expect if I was only 5 weeks or less.
It is so painful waiting x

Mary85 · 28/05/2016 18:58

This is my first pregnancy. 2 days ago I noticed some spotting. I went to the hospital and I had ultrasound and they saw
gestational sac but no yolk sac or my magic bean. After seeing that I felt really upset and tried my hardest not to cry. I thought I was 7 weeks pregnant but I got a phone call from the midwife and she told me I'm 5 weeks pregnant. So I researched everywhere on the Internet what to expect at 5 weeks and saw most people saw their yolk sac and their bean. I have to go back in 2 weeks and oh my I can't wait for these 2 weeks to go by. I'm hoping they will do a scan for me after a week seeing me. I'm resting and trying not to think about it but it's so hard. All this worry isn't good for the baby as well.

lulux9 · 30/04/2017 00:14

Hi, I just need some advice and would like to know if some people are going/went through what I am going through. My LMP was last month 10th March 2017, my period is irregular, sometimes I get it after 24 days and sometimes I get it after 33 days. Did a PT on the 10th of April and came out positive. Did two blood tests aswell and everything is normal, even the doctor confirmed that it is not ectopic pregnancy.

I've been bleeding since I found out that I am pregnant - bleeding not heavy but always have pink/brown stain everytime I wipe. Sometimes there's a pink spots on my knickers too. I always go back to EPU to double check as this is getting me really worried. Today I did another TU and they told me my gestational sac has gotten bigger compared to last time. This time it is 6mm x 7mm but they still couldn't see the yolk sac. I'm worried if the baby is still there or maybe I had an early miscarriage that's why I've been bleeding (although it's light) for three weeks now. I need help please!

TeaAndPjs · 30/04/2017 07:13

Could just be too early to see anything, I had a scan beginning of April and was just and empty sack but sonographer seemed happy, I can't say the same for myself, 2 weeks later sac had grown and could see yolk/HB/feral pole but was measuring 2 weeks behind my dates (which can't be possible) I'm back later this week to check progress!

If you're used to irregular periods then maybe you're just spotting as it's when you'd have a period and it's lasting longer

biginjapan · 30/04/2017 07:41

Hi lulux- it's torture, isn't it? I have been spotting on and off since my bfp 4 weeks ago. First scan I measured behind - gest sac but nothing else. Next week everything had grown consistently and there was a heartbeat but still spotting. Total limbo - I feel for you.

lulux9 · 30/04/2017 12:09

biginjapan - totally. I wanna know the reason of my bleeding. I was meant to be 7w2d pregnant but they told me I'm not 7weeks as I'm irregular and they couldn't find the yolk sac. I have to wait until next week to find out if it's on going or failed pregnancy.

Tedmorris123 · 18/11/2019 15:07

Hi everyone I would like it if someone could help. I had brown discharge as 6 week pregnant today through Ivf. I went and got a scan and they are saying I’m measuring small for my stage and it’s between 5-7mm they want me to go back in a week to see if grew. Has this happens to anyone? I know it’s not going to make any difference and I know prob had misscarridge thanks

Ivfmom · 07/03/2020 02:14

At 5 weeks 6 days I had ultrasound n seen empty sac my hcg levels were 368 my doctor thinks I’m going to miscarriage but I have one more hcg test Monday to see if they come up Anyone experience this n come out with positive news?

GlamMom · 18/03/2020 11:16

Thanks for sharing.

Your story provides a small glimmer of hope for my daughter. She went for her 6 week ultrasound on yesterday due to a slowly increasing HCG level and was told there was no embryo in her sac and her pregnancy was most like non viable. I’m devastated, but trying to stay strong and remain positive for her. She has another ultrasound scheduled, but wondering should she wait 2 weeks to back.

Anyone, please share your thoughts.

MrsRose2018 · 18/03/2020 14:08

Nothing positive I’m afraid :(

I had a miscarriage last August. I was 5 weeks pregnant and had some bleeding so I went to my EPU where they did my bloods and my HCG levels were pretty much identical to yours! However when they repeated them they only went up by 10% and that was pretty much when I was told I was going to have a non viable pregnancy. I had a scan the next day and sadly completely empty! I don’t think there was even a yolk sac but I could be misremembering.

Ultimately I was diagnosed with an anembrionic pregnancy/blighted ovum and that was that!

However it isn’t uncommon for it to be too early and there being nothing there yet and everything is fine! It’s the HCG results which will be the definitive answer!

I truly hope everything is fine for you and I have my fingers crossed xxx

Hi,
Just some advice, so in March I had a missed miscarriage where baby stopped developing at 6weeks. I found out we were pregnant again a few weeks ago, I chart my cycle so I know I should be 6+3 today I had a scan where they said there was a pregnancy sac but appeared empty. I had bloods taken and told to come back a week today for another scan. I am obviously very anxious after my missed miscarriage I have had no symptoms of a miscarriage at all but I didn’t the last time around either, so I’m understandably very worried. Has anyone else experienced this and had a positive outcome?
