Test at gp?

I have an appointment at the gp this week. Can I ask for a pregnancy test while I’m there?

You can ask but they may tell you to buy one at the shops.

Santasushi · 03/12/2018 00:42

So I may as well buy one anyway?
Damn. The last time I did this was 13 years ago and you tested at home and then they tested again at the gp. I wasn’t sure if I could cut out the middle man.

You can but why? If going regarding some other reason, why be so cheap? This is an example of why the NHS doesn't have enough money. Buy yourself a pregnancy test! If going for purely this reason, what a complete waste of an appointment!

Myshinynewname · 03/12/2018 00:47

Pay for your own. The NHS is on its knees.

Santasushi · 03/12/2018 00:53

Crikey! I’m sorry. I’m well aware that the nhs is struggling. I work for them.
As I said you used to have to go and have it confirmed anyway. Obviously this isn’t the case anymore.
I’m going for something that may be related. I was asked at a previous appointment if I could be pregnant and said no. Since then I’ve had a one day period. I’ll test at home. (And then go to the gp).
Thanks though Biscuit

It's very unlikely they'll do one. It's rare now that they confirm. My pregnancy this time wasn't confirmed until my dating scan, which is normal here. You just self refer to the midwives.

KonaMum · 03/12/2018 07:00

The GP surgery I work in has loads of pregnancy tests hanging around in drawers or cupboards. If you’re going for something related, I don’f See why they wouldn’t test tbh.

Ragaroo · 03/12/2018 07:22

My GP did one 4 years ago. I went because I was feeling sick, not knowing why. He said to pee in a container so I did, and he did one of those really cheap dip tests. Obviously during the appointment. Not sure they'd give them out for free. Turned out I was pregnant. You can buy them so cheap on Amazon or eBay nowadays though.

mortifiedmama · 03/12/2018 07:53

Not all surgeries have them these days KonaMum our doesn't, you have to leave a urine sample at the desk and they send it off!

sar302 · 03/12/2018 14:35

Definitely do your own. I told my GP I was pregnant and she got her magic spinning wheel to work out the due date and then sent me off to refer myself to a hospital!

TequilaMockingburd · 03/12/2018 17:01

I went to my GP for what I thought was an unrelated thing and he opened a packet of about 400 tests and did it there and then. I’m guessing the prolific eaters, drinkers and smokers cost the NHS much more than you ever would OP.

figelnarage · 03/12/2018 17:04

Hi OP. In this area (north hearts) you do the test at home and then self-refer to hospital, don't even see the midwife at GP surgery until 16 weeks. It's probably different in other areas though? Hope you get the outcome you are hoping for the test.

sirmione16 · 03/12/2018 17:05

Currently pregnant. Just rang and said I'm pregnant and they referred me to the midwife, no GP appointment needed. They don't check as home tests are so accurate and available now.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 03/12/2018 17:06

Trainee doctor here. They’re the same test you can buy in Poundland so just do one at home. We do not do anything more high tech than that

Santasushi · 03/12/2018 20:31

Thanks all. I managed to get one today (first time I’ve been able to leave the house in weeks). I’ll test in the morning.

‘Not pregnant’ but didn’t beep to say I had peed enough or to say it was done as described in the instructions? Does that mean it didn’t work properly? No error came up just a little flashy timer and then not pregnant.
I am relieved but a teeny bit sad. I’m too old, children are grown and I had an awful time of it last time.

figelnarage · 04/12/2018 10:22

Sounds like you bought a flashy one. I just bought the cheap paper sticks or basic plastic ones...no beeping with those. Sorry I can't help.

I know what you mean re the sadness.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Santasushi · 04/12/2018 10:37

Thanks Figel. It was the only one they had. It was worth a shot.
