Continous sickness early pregnancy

Hi, i apologise for the grim story im about to unleash onto you

Im early into my pregnancy (9weeks) and my morning sickness is all day all night sickness and has been for 5 weeks now.

I cant keep any solids or fluids down for more than 30minutes, ive been to the doctors as im seriously concerned and she didn't seem to be worried in the slightest, told me it was normal and gave me anti sickness tablets (Cyclizine)

Great! Answer to all my problems, or so i thought

The tablets are only surpressing my sickness for around an hour or two, then the nausea comes back with a vengeance so i take another and after an hour or two it hits again. The problem im having is you are only supposed to take 3 a day.
If im taking them every 2 hours within 6 hours there is my 3 tablets gone. After 6 hours its almost as if all the sickness ive been supressing during the day is now coming up in one go.

I honestly don't know what to do. With it still being early in my pregnancy i haven't told any family or friends yet so dont have anyone else to turn to for help. This is both mine and my partners first pregnancy, so we are both just so lost and unnaware of what we should or shouldn't be doing in these situations. He tries to help as much as he can but has a phobia of sickness (god help him when he has a child to take care of) so he kind of just runs away from this. I feel so alone and helpless and terrified that im causing harm to my baby

Any advice or tips or just any kind of reasurrance that I'm not alone with this would be massively appreciated. Im honestly at my end with this now and at a total loss of what to do

Hi OP

I really feel for you I was awful in the early stages, my DP used to literally pick me up off the bathroom floor and put me in bed as I was too weak to move. I was sick between 3 - 5 times per day and lost 9 pounds in 4 weeks and top off the situation the nausea was 24/7. So I feel for you.

The medication you were prescribed reacted funny with me, I felt like weird - I can’t explain not drowsy just strange. They actually made me more sick so I had to stop taking them - I ended up in A&E and was prescribed the first set of tablets I was originally given (they didn’t agree me with either at first) but once they gave me the injection I felt instantly better (I was just starving) - I’m still taking the tablets today Ondansetron and they stop me being sick as much. Usually once every morning but the nausea is still there but not as strong. I’d definitely recommend taking them, they stop you loosing weight too. Only downside is they make you very constipated so you have to balance with lactulose and movicol.

Don’t worry about harm to the baby, I know it’s easy said. Your baby will be taking all your goodness from your body which has been stored away. I know people with HG who are sick 10+ times per day and their babies and healthy. Just ensure you track how much water you are drinking, your weight and if you are sick blood - get in touch with your GP ASAP. I know it’s completely draining but it does get better - either that or I’m used to feeling like shit now.

I feel doctors are very quick to mark it as morning sickness quickly, and that it’s completely normal without hearing you out fully. It’s not normal and the effect it has on your overall well-being is awful. It took me 3 GPs to finally listen to me and I was one small step away from being in hospital again, so if you are struggling do challenge and explain to your GP. Hopefully they are more understanding for you.

I really hope you feel better soon though 💜

Meant to add too, during the first stages of my pregnancy ice lollies were a god send. I instantly stopped feeling sick whilst having one and always kept that down x

You are not alone, and it really is horrible. You can go back to see your GP and ask to try different medications, there are other options which may work better. If you feel you may be getting dehydrated ask them to check your urine as it may be you need a brief stay in hospital for some IV fluids and meds. There's a hyperemesis support thread in this forum, have you had a look there for advice and support?

lstef · 28/11/2018 23:07

sorry to hear it, sounds awful. search for the hyperemesis support thread on here, will link if i can - lots of people suffering to the same level ( I dont have it myself but read for info/knowledge). There are other meds to add on top of cyclizine but the ladies there will be able to help more (Id suggest copying your post onto that thread). also look up pregnancy sickness support charity. If GP doesnt want to increase/add meds then ask to be referred to obstetrician.

Good luck with it and hang in there. there is help to be found and you are not alone!

Thank you so much for your supportive words. Its so comforting to know im not alone.
The thoughts that run through my head cause more damage than is actually happening to me i think

Im trying to drink as much water as i can possibly manage as to avoid dehydration. I have my first appointment with my midwife in 5 days so im hoping she will take more notice of my concerns than my GP. Or shall i be more pressing onto my GP?

Icepops and slush drinks are my best friend atm, feel like a child again but they are so soothing.

Thankyou for the advice of the hypermesis thread too, im going to go have a read through now to settle my mind more.

Thankyou again ladies for your kind words and help ❤

OP your midwife cant prescribe anything, go back to GP, take info from PSS website for back up - she needs to listen or refer you on. good luck!

Anyat212 · 28/11/2018 23:30

Yeah @lstef is right, your midwife will just tell you to get in touch with your GP. I made that mistake and waited until I saw my midwife for her to tell me that!

You think they would be able to prescribe things like that though, it would be a help. X
