Struggling with dehydration!

I normally drink around 4litres of water or sugar free squash per day, I've always drunk a lot and have no problem with it at all.

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and all pregnancy I've struggled to find anything that tastes normal! Everything tastes like medicine and makes me gag unless it's ICE COLD water and I mean ICE COLD. I then can only drink through a straw. I work in a nursery so can only have a plastic bottle to drink from and now...to make it worse....even ice water tastes horrible. I HATE milk and now water tastes to me like thick cream and I'm really sick if I take a sip. I don't like tea or coffee anyway so they aren't options either.

So far I've gone off:

All types of squash (honestly have 15 open bottles of squash at home!)
Water
Lemonade (sugar free)
Orangeade (sugar free)
Fruit teas

Everything tastes like metal and when it hits the back of my throat....sick

The only drink I like is regular fanta but I have to watch my sugar levels as I already have a high BMI.

Sorry for TMI but my wee is getting darker and darker by the day, I'm struggling to even get a litre down me. And it's counterproductive because if I have a drink I don't like...I'm then sick which dehydrates me more. I have a constant headache.....

HELP please!!

I'm 17 weeks too and my urine has been brown for 11 weeks, still feeling sick all the time and hate drinking!! Cold, slightly flat pop is bearable. Trying herbal teas (fruity) which are bearable. First pregnancy I loved Vimto but not any more! I go on/off squash flavours. I can't drink on an empty stomach though, otherwise it comes back up. Just praying i feel more normal around 20 weeks like I did with DS! Good luck hun x

Can you manage ice lollies? If you can, can you get an ice lolly mould and see if you can turn some of your 15 bottles of squash into something useful?

If you make your own, you might find you need to dilute the squash less, as the taste is less strong when frozen. Or you might not!

Can you manage soup? I’m mostly not a fan right now, but if you can, it’s all extra liquid.

How about hot water with bovril or half a chicken or vegetable stock cube? I use the Kallo organic ones because they taste the best, although Marigold do good vegetable stock.

Good luck!

yikes sounds tough, sorry you're struggling so much.

I'm wondering if you could try eating things with high liquid content - say a brothy soup, satsumas, grapes, watermelon/other melon, cucumber etc

have you tried sparkling water?

Smoothies? (obvs be careful of the sugar hit if you're watching that) - you might tolerate thicker liquids better - they feel different/heavier in the stomach so might be less likely to come back up (i found them easier to drink at one point).

Non-dairy milks? probably ones with flavour e.g. chocolate or vanilla, plain nut/soya milk isnt great!

Diluted fruit juice? (squash tastes awful to me too, I seem to be more sensitive to the taste of sweeteners).

Ive bought belvoir farms ginger cordial today, yum mixed with sparkling water - has sugar in but a bit maybe ok among other things.

might be worth speaking to GP too as not good if you cant keep fluid down - people on other threads use ketostix to prove they are dehydrated - sticks that measure ketones in urine - might be useful evidence.

hope you find something that works.

Do you think you can manage sugar-free Lucozade to give you SOMETHING (I know it's not ideal but it's surely better thn nothing)?

If you've got a metallic style taste I found irn bru good, and they do a sugar free version. I used to have ice pops as well when I was struggling.

Fruit juice
Coca Cola (full sugar which I never drink the rest of the time)
Coffee with lots of sugar

I normally drink sweeteners in everything and lots of water, coffee, tea, energy drinks, pop, juice etc. Etc. I am always permanently thirsty.
When I'm pregnant I really struggle. I have HG so couldn't drink anything at all without medication.
Also without meds can only eat plain crackers or salted pasta and nothing else so definitely extreme!

I get the water thing though
I normally drink at least a litre of water a day but can't stand it in pregnancy

Cab you crunch ice? I know thirst is linked to iron deficiency - this isn't thirst as such but maybe a tenuous link - might be worth mentioning to MW.

Babyno2mamabear · 29/11/2018 20:59

Thank you so much for all of your lovely suggestions!

I have managed an ice lolly for breakfast (wooo!) So that instantly made me feel like id achieved something. Then snacked on satsumas and grapes through the day and managed small sips of water.

Tonight I've been sick (boooo) but then had some water after and it's stayed down. Think I just have to take each day as it comes.

I'm going to call my MW tomorrow and just mention it though.

Thanks so much for getting back to me xxx
