Maternity clothing - help!!

Rosie9789 · 26/11/2018 10:36

So I am now twelve weeks pregnant and am really struggling to find maternity clothes! I don't want to be spending too much and I'm finding that very few shops actually do fashionable maternity clothes so am really struggling to find things!! Also, the majority of shops near me don't even stock a maternity section in store so am having to find things online instead, does anybody else feel like this and are there any recommendations as to where to shop?
Thank you in advance xxx

I'm really tight with money (LOL) so I haven't bought anything maternity, currently 26 & half weeks preg, I live in black leggings (same size as pre-pregnancy as they stretch) and I have bought a few long, very stretchy or oversized style wool jumpers/dresses in the same size as pre pregnancy so I can wear them again after. Was pretty lucky and could still wear size 8 skinny jeans till 18 weeks though.. Only really popped out around 20 weeks. Found maternity jeans in previous pregnancy really uncomfortable (even though they were bloody expensive and highly recommended. Leggings and thick tights are a god send. So happy to be having another winter baby!

Rosie9789 · 26/11/2018 12:11

Haha, leggings do seem like the best option! Yeah, I'm not sure about the maternity jeans either as they do seem to be quite expensive and I don't think I'll be comfortable in them from what some have told me! I can see myself just sticking to leggings!

I got my mat jeans from new look I honestly couldn’t recommend them enough! If you do buy some they tend to go for a decent price on eBay if you wanted to sell afterwards.

Although leggings are a good shout, mat tights are perfect for work too x

le42 · 26/11/2018 12:26

I really like the new look dresses.
For sports leggings Gap ones are excellent so comfortable!
H&M do good long vest top (not maternity) I just went up a size and have worn this loads with jeans and leggings.

You can buy new look from ASOS so take advantage of how easy their delivery and returns is.

Plus you can always sell them after!

MynameisJune · 26/11/2018 12:27

I’ve got Mamalicious mat jeans from ASOS, they are super comfy. I’m living in those with normal jumpers at the minute and dresses/tights in my normal size. Trying not to buy too much winter stuff.

Darkstar4855 · 26/11/2018 12:32

I liked the Katie Piper collection at wantthattrend.co.uk. Lots of nice stretchy jersey dresses that did me right from around 15 weeks to term and much cheaper than Seraphine/Jojo Maman (their stuff was lovely but quite expensive).

I used H&M for leggings, vest tops and other essentials.

Rosie9789 · 26/11/2018 12:38

New Look sounds pretty good then! Yes I'll definitely do it through ASOS thats a good idea. Yes @MynameisJune I'm the same, I don't want to overdo it with winter clothes! Not had a look at the Katie Piper collection before, sounds like my kind of thing though!

How do people find maternity tights? I usually live in dresses and tights - currently 10 weeks and finding my usual tights feel horrible round the middle so I have to fold them down - but not sure if maternity tights will fit me yet!

I did borrow (and am already wearing) a pair of under-bump jeans from a friend which I think I will have difficulty giving back at the end of the pregnancy! -- they are SO comfy.

Anyat212 · 26/11/2018 13:35

Hi @TakingtheLeap

I got my mat tights from new look £8 for 2 pairs and they are sooo comfy it’s a joke! My normal tights were the same as you’ve mentioned. I bought them around 16 weeks and they’ve been fine and as I’ve said earlier I’m not really showing just look a little bloated x

Lunalula · 26/11/2018 13:39

Depending on size and how most CH weight you gain, you may not even need maternity clothes. I never bought any maternity clothes during my pregnancies.
1st I was sick and lost weight so was comfortable in my every day regular clothes. Literally at 38 weeks I couldn't do my buttons up on my jeans so I used a hairband wrapped round the button and through the loop!
Even with my 2nd I wore looser trousers and longer tops!

SoyDora · 26/11/2018 13:41

I didn’t put on much weight at all but was literally all bump, no way I could get away with normal clothes as I had a bowling ball on my stomach!

whiteonesugar · 26/11/2018 13:48

I'm only 9 weeks but am getting a belly already so have bought a pair of underbump jeans but they fall down LOL.

However, with DS I got maternity stuff from Asda (the wonderfit jeans are amazing if they are still there) and ASOS, some mothercare stuff. But the majority of my clothes weren't actually maternity. I got tons of jersey bits, tube skirts, long vests, long sleeved t shirts etc from Primark and just sized up. Jersey is your friend!

cupcakedreamer · 26/11/2018 13:55

I got a good bump quite fast too!

For jeans, I got one pair from Boohoo, one from Asda, who had some surprisingly good, cheap bits!

Tops I found H&M were brilliant, and basically live in the same four shirts from there. And Asda for vest tops.

Pyjamas are a must, so comfy it's amazing! I got some from Next and Dorothy Perkins (who knew!)

Also, as an extra, I got a huge, very cosy maternity jumper from Boohoo and have worn it a huge amount and will after baby. Also, a maternity coat from Amazon that was £35, so not bad for a coat!

It does seem like a huge amount is online, I haven't had any luck in shops. I also found ASOS a little pricey but feel happy with the bits I have!

Do you think I need to bother with maternity pyjamas or would you recommend just getting a size up? That way I can wear them after pregnancy as well.

For places like H&M and new look I ordered everything I wanted online to collect in store. Collected it, tried it all on in the changing rooms and returned what I didn't want there and then.

Pyjamas wise I just went to primark and bought stretchy bits in a bigger size and that worked fine.

Gap do some good under bump jeans. I got lots from Jojo as I could try it on, few bits from Seraphine, basics like t-shirts and leggings from H&M and New Look and a few jersey dresses from Debenhams for work.

RockinRobinTweets · 26/11/2018 15:56

Next, especially the clearance section. Amazing resale on eBay afterwards

Rosie9789 · 26/11/2018 17:54

Yes, anything stretchy should be fine I’d imagine, thank you so much for all the recommendations!! Smile

Some of the bigger H&M and New Look stores do have a maternity section in store. I'm like you, I like to try things on! So far I've mainly bought jeans and leggings, and then I've just gone for roomy tops rather than buying loads of mat stuff x

Rosie9789 · 26/11/2018 20:30

Yes much prefer to try on!! Yeah, not sure if I need to buy many mat tops, like you say I think its a good idea just to get a couple of sizes up if it's in the right material!

George at Asda do a lot of maternity stuff at good prices but it's early all black/white. H&M seem to have a nice range as well.

I love my skinny over bump mat jeans from h&m , I've got two pairs, got the first when I was about twenty weeks, still wearing them now at 37 weeks. I also like their leggings and they had a few colours £8.99 I think so not expensive and they are nice thick ones, bought a few dresses in there for work too they were around £25 but I just couldn't get into any of my work clothes. Also got a nice dress in New look I can wear for work and is also suitable for breast feeding
