Where to buy baby clothes?

I’ve already started to buy sleepsuits/vests but where is the best place to buy. I’m aware they don’t wear them long so I don’t want to spend £100s on clothes that won’t be worn. A lot of people say next but it’s like £20 per outfit which I can’t really justify or are they actually worth it? 🙂 thanks in advance

Primark and Asda are my favourites for staples - bodysuits, sleepsuits, baby grows etc. Decent quality and not expensive at all.

TinyMarie · 25/11/2018 19:39

A lot of the big supermarkets do packs of vests and sleepsuits at really reasonable prices.

Jackshouse · 25/11/2018 19:39

Look out for Aldi baby events. There baby things, especially clothes are really good quality. Sainsbury frequently have 25% off sales.

norbert23 · 25/11/2018 19:39

Morrison's do lovely baby clothes. Plus baby markets - most clothes are practically new as they grow out of things so quickly!

TulipsInbloom1 · 25/11/2018 19:40

Honestly dont even bother with full outfits. Buy sleepsuits and bodysuits and a cardiegan or two. When the baby arrives people will inundate you with outfits and you will realise how practical sleepsuits are.

Next sleepsuits are great as the cuffs fold over so no need for scratch mitts. And h&m do excellent little wrap over long sleeved vests with matching soft leggings with feet in.

I've bought the basic stuff second hand / nearly new. Or new but never worn on eBay in bundles or at mum2mum markets. They only wear them once or twice then are outgrown. I've saved lots of money that way to put towards other things, have bought far better quality than I could otherwise afford e.g organic cotton from frugi, and am helping the environment. I understand some people want new, but by doing this with clothes we feel less guilt buying an expensive brand new pram, and bedside crib etc.

BlackandGold · 25/11/2018 19:41

Sainsbury's Tu range is actually very good and Tesco do some good basic clothes for stuff that will be quickly outgrown.

Haven't tried Primark but Asda stuff is fine as well.

Do any of you guys use charity shops?

I have a toddler now and I love charity shops as they are in clothes for no very long so it is such a waste to buy new. It is worth joining Facebook parents selling sites too.

LuckyKitty13 · 25/11/2018 19:47

Cross post! Not charity shops but second hand as I mentioned above.
For example five 0-3month frugi babygrows for £10 - new never worn but washed. They are usually £15 each new. And 10 newborn babygrows for £5 - worn 1-2 times each. Lovely condition. All from eBay. Been really happy with the purchases.

MammaSchwifty · 25/11/2018 19:47

I love charity shops for buying hand knit cardigans and jumpers - the shop near me sells these new for £1 or £2 depending on size, and they are so soft and lovely. I just feel guilty that they cost so little for something a lovely lady will have knitted!

noenergy · 25/11/2018 19:49

Sainsbury's has 25% off at the minute, I like their baby vests and sleepsuits. You don't really need any other outfits for the first few months. Maybe just one or two if u really want to. Asda is also good for baby stuff and regularly have baby events.

I only ever bought next or mothercare sleepsuits in the sale as they are nearly £20 for 3.

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2018 19:56

Small babies don't really wear those mini outfits. Also you don't really know what size as some babies are almost straight into 3-6 months. Between NCT sales and helpful friends there are tonnes of hardly worn baby clothes in circulation. Often sold as bundles. Often people have the opposite problem with "helpful" friends and neighbours turning up with bags full on the doorstep.

Tiptopj · 25/11/2018 19:56

I think Vests, sleep suits, socks etc are great from asda- they wash really well and are good quality. For nicer outfits I love M&CO baby section- they're about the same price as next but the quality is great and they nearly always have a sale on where £20 outfits are reduced to a couple of quid.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 25/11/2018 19:58

Sainsbury's do good vests & sleepsuits and regularly have 25% off. My dd is quite long and I find them a good fit too. Next ones are good quality and wash well but are a bit more expensive

choccybuttonshelpeverything · 25/11/2018 20:01

I've had lots of lovely bargains from eBay.
Leave the outfits for when they are bigger. Yes they look cute but it's unnecessary work changing in and out morning and night ( Learnt that with second baby)

Huntlybyelection · 25/11/2018 20:01

You can pick up good bargains at NCT sales or mum to mum or jack and jill sales.

If you want to buy new, Sainsbury's clothes are good quality and wash well. Marks and Spencer same and reasonably priced. John Lewis always do some lovely sets of 3 sleepsuits or vests.

Primark vests and sleepsuits didn't seem to last for me - really cheap quality and it made me uncomfortable about the ethical cost too.

Next is pricey for a high street shoo but they do last well. Also slightly large for the size (my kids were in 0-3 next till 6 months).

All of these brands lasted for my second baby and only weren't passed down to a friend's baby if they were really badly stained. (Charity shop for ragging instead)

anniehm · 25/11/2018 20:08

Asda, Morrison's and don't buy too much! Newborn I would suggest perhaps 4-5 sets of bodysuits and sleepsuits, nothing else until after baby is born (many only wear them for a week, some not at all!) 7 sets of 0-3 plus a couple of "best" outfits before birth is plenty too.

If baby is early and/or small with 24 hour supermarkets and next day delivery it's easy to pick up extra.

Squiff70 · 25/11/2018 20:09

I'm with @KatnissK. Primark and Asda. £20 an outfit? When theyre older maybe but not babies! Vest, babygro and cardigan. £10 at most for all three. Don't forget you may get clothes given to you as gifts.

Notquiteagandt · 25/11/2018 20:12

Look for sales in store.

I have bought loads thats unworn but washed from ebay, second hand sales and nct sales. As people usually end up with loads of stuff in smaller sizes. Too much to wear in such short time period.

I like m&s for basics. Reasonable and lovely quality.

I have loads stuff from jojo maman bebe and little white company in their sales that cost same as primark etc.

Baby gap as well seem to constantly have 50% off.

But when my babies small I just plan to put her in baby grow and some kind of knit. Or soft trousers a vest and jumper. Super soft easy clothes rather than outfits.

tryinganewname · 25/11/2018 20:13

I have a 4 month old girl.. honestly, sleepsuits and vests are all you need for the first few weeks and after that, just go for leggings and tops (boy or girl).

DD got so many outfits and dresses bought and they're just a complete faff - forever pulling tights up and dresses down!

Pretty much all DD's stuff is from Asda or Tesco. We got a lot of stuff bought from Next and it is lovely quality but I couldn't pay their prices, also note that their sizes run huge.

JayDude · 25/11/2018 20:15

I really wouldn't bother with newborn unless your family is small or has a history of small babies. Mine were all 8lb + and only in 0-3 for a short while. Then in 3-6 from about 6 weeks.

Second hand is the way to go although I did treat myself/ baby to some M&S baby grows as first outfits. I've kept them and will turn them into a patchwork teddy when I get round to it (or someone else will).

I don't thing DC3 (2) has had anything new apart from nappies and shoes. She doesn't know, I don't care and my wallet and tree environment are helped Smile

riotlady · 25/11/2018 20:15

Asda and Matalan for basics, or eBay/fb for second hand stuff. Just buy basics- vests, sleep suits, etc, as people will probably buy you cute “outfits” and they’ll barely ever wear them.

tryinganewname · 25/11/2018 20:15

As she's gone up into sizes I've bought big bundles off eBay too, I kitted her out for winter for about £40 apart from a coat and pram suit.

DD owns more clothes than I've owned in my entire life though..

duckthisshit · 25/11/2018 20:44

Tesco have some nice sleep suits and vests. I think a pack of 2 sleep suits were £10 not sure about a pack of 3. Sainsburys always do nice baby clothes too.
