6 weeks - "threatened miscarriage" and stomach bug - asking for advice!

Sorry for the late-night and slightly desperate post! I'm 6 weeks pregnant following a previous miscarriage and since earlier this week I've had on-off bleeding and a very bad stomach upset (which I was initially worried about, but which my GP advised is probably just a virus).

GP said that the bleeding is a "threatened miscarriage" and advised me to rest as much as possible and that she will refer me to the early pregnancy unit if things haven't settled down by Monday.

I've had on-off, not heavy, bleeding since then, but I'm more concerned about the fact that I've been struggling to keep fluids down because of the virus. (I won't go into too much detail, but think very bad stomach cramps and persistent D&V!)

I'm just feeling super afraid and not sure if I should seek medical advice before Monday. Any advice would be very very much appreciated!!

Oh honey you poor thing. All sounds totally dreadful and a horrible experience for you. When I last had this I wasted hours in A&E on a Sunday before being the first app at the EPU on Monday morning. But I didn’t have the virus just bleeding and then mc was confirmed. See how you feel today, stay in bed lots of rest and call out of hours GP who may do home visits on a Sunday? If it gets really bad today then you should go to A&E because they’ll at least get fluids into you. Then EPU Monday morning for a scan. Sorry not much help but don’t suffer at home today if things get worse. Xx

I think that personally I would stay home and rest and try to get better. If you phoned 111 where might they send you and how much would it take it out of you. Honestly hours of waiting around in A&E and a long car journey would do you no good. I would stay in bed and take rehydration sachets and drink as much as you can. I think that if things get worse then I would consider calling.

I hope you feel better soon and that your baby is ok.

Thank you so much for replying - I'm also inclined not to go to A&E or UCC or anything, but I'm not sure how much that's rational decision making and how much it's just me being a bit feeble!

I am just a bit terrified, because I don't feel like the constant throwing up and sweating and shivering can be doing any good! But on the up side, the bleeding has now really turned to nothing more than slight spotting, so I'm crossing my fingers... I woke up with terrible back pain and was petrified, but it turned out (tmi!) to be the start of another hour on the loo with diarrhoea. I don't think I've ever been pleased by that before!

Bleeding has started again and I'm panicking :( I'm worried that I should go to A&E, but I am reluctant because I'm still being sick all the time, and what will they be able to do anyway? Urgh.

Sadly there is nothing A&E can do for you.

Stay in bed, get plenty of rest and sip clear fluids. Know that if you do miscarry nothing you did caused it and it can’t be avoided.

Wait for your EPU appointment where they will be able to tell you what is causing the bleeding. I bled on and off from weeks 5-11 and it was terrifying waiting for the EPU appointment each time so I know how hard the waiting is.

Thank you - that is actually really helpful because my feeling was the same, I couldn't really see what A&E would be able to do. I was just worrying that I might be wrong, I might regret it, etc etc etc. Poor you, it sounds like you had a tough time over those 6 weeks!

A&E won't be able to do anything, it will just cause you further stress. I really hope that it's a false alarm for you but for now stay at home and take care of yourself as best you can. Am keeping my fingers crossed for you as I know what an awful place you are in.

bellainthemiddle · 25/11/2018 17:36

Thank you for all the sweet replies. I know that I myself will be OK (it's just a virus at the end of the day!) but I am just so terrified waiting and I'm also feeling a bit exhausted and fed up with constantly throwing up. Hope I haven't given the virus to anyone else...

How are you today? A&E is definitely a waste of time and you’ll feel worse there. Did you manage to get to the EPU today?

mimixvx · 28/11/2018 05:28

@bellainthemiddle this happened to me at 6 weeks too unfortunately. It took them 3 drs appointments to refer me to an EPU and GAU but when they finally got me through I had a scan and everything was fine it was my bowels playing havoc. Have you been tested for anything to do with your bowels? (IBS, IBD etc) as that can be a cause of pain and late bleeding from damage of bowels during pregnancy.

This is my first pregnancy so I was extremely worried too and it took them a while to get me a scan but if you pester them enough someone will get you into the EPU to put your mind at ease! Hopefully everything goes well for you xx
