Worried about glucose test

I have my glucose test on Monday and I'm worried about... because I won't be able to eat in the morning 🤣

I wake up about 4am most days now (28 weeks) and I'm ravenous, I have to get up and eat.

My test is at 9am... but it will be near 11/12 pm before I can eat.. this seems barbaric for a pregnant lady and I'm really freaking out about it.

I only just qualified for this test as my bmi is 30.. Iv had two other pregnancies and didn't need this test and I have showed no signs of sugar etc in any of my wee tests.

I'm not really sure what I'm expecting you to all say, other than get a grip... but if I don't eat I'm gunna really struggle!

I was the exact same, i really thought I was going to pass out waiting to be allowed to eat... bring some snacks for immediately after!!

Eminybob · 23/11/2018 04:45

Haha I had exactly the same thought when I had mine. I used to get up and eat to stave off sickness at around 4am, just like you.

Just make sure you have a good size meal as late as you possibly can before starting your fast. You will be fine though, honestly.

I had my test a week ago.
If you can have a snack before 10pm - I had yoghurt with some fruit & keep having some water by your bedside you will be fine -honestly.
Most of the time we aren't needing food when we feel hungry as we are normally just needing water so as long as you take things steady getting up & to the hospital without using lots of energy rushing around you should be fine until you get given the drink after first bloods are taken just after your appointment time.

Btw- the drink I was given tasted fine (I know some people said they hated the taste but I believe NHS changed it last year) - like the flat orange lucozade drink. It has enough calories in it to get you through the wait for next blood test.

Having a snack to hand straight after 2nd bloods are taken is worth it- I found a banana was all I needed to give me a boost to walk back to the car which I had parked so far away!

Thank you ladies.. I know I'm being silly about it and I'll manage... I'll just eat ALL the food once I'm done 🤣

This worried me and to top it off, they gave me my Anti D injection half way through the test! A needle in the thigh was not was not what I needed when already feeling weak and shaky with hunger. Just make sure you have a snack and bring a book or iPad to distract you so you're not thinking about it too much.

I was starving during mine, always have a huge appetite in morning (and all day actually!)- I also drinks so much water so that was hard to, just to sip small amounts- it was a crappy few hours - not gonna lie but I really enjoyed eating at 12! We went to steak and lobster and I had a huge feed!!! 😂

You’ll be fine... it’s just a few hours and you’ll be on the countdown

Sexnotgender · 23/11/2018 11:51

I was really worried about the test but it was actually fine.

Though the anti D injection half way through seems a bit shit!

Have something to eat at 10pm the night before.

You can drink water. Your bloods will be done at 9am and next lot at 11am so you will be offered a sandwich and cup of tea just after 11.

You can also sip water during the test.

Take a book.

So after being diagnosed with GD, I realised that the worry most people have with being too hungry is that you might pass out, feel faint or get an instinctive urge to correct low blood sugar.

But metabolically, once you get the glucose drink, your blood sugar levels are more than enough to carry you through 2 hours without any food at all! Even though your stomach is empty, your body has plenty of energy/glucose to keep going. Your blood glucose level will actually be far higher than 1-2 hours after a full meal.

The only thing that might be a problem is the fasting value. If it's hovering around 70/3.9mmol then that's when you will get hunger pangs and faintness. However once you drink the glucose, that will rocket up to 180/10mmol (1hr) and slowly drop to 140/7.8mmol (2hrs). As a comparison, most people don't even reach 120/6.7mmol 2hrs after a large meal. So the hunger is a red herring...it will feel uncomfortable and you really want to eat but rest assured that your body has more than enough energy to keep going for 2 hrs :)

Just to update- I was right to worry. 15 mins after having the drink I passed out. Was admitted to labour ward for monitoring- all fine and I passed the glucose test... BUT my body does not like to be starved!!

@kmreeve oh No! Bless you! Not what you need at all! I have one in Feb and now very worried lol. If I don't eat I'm violently sick, I normally just have a few grapes and I'm ok again...but this has made me worry! Glad you're ok now xx
