Hi all,

I'm 28 weeks and have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Currently awaiting first appointment, but isn't until next week.

Just looking for words of wisdom/support/advice from anyone who has been in the situation 😊

Cloud you're causing problems for yourself and your baby.
Every blood sugar spike makes baby bigger and more insulin resistant, increasing the chance of both obesity and type 2 diabetes for your child, as well as neonatal blood sugar problems which if they aren't caught and treated properly can cause brain damage.
Go cold turkey. Horribly difficult to start with but then easier. Much more so than keeping on with the refined carbs. Find some way that you tolerate the testing. It will get easier the more you do.

I had gd 17 years ago with my youngest DD.

The advice I was given then by a dietician was to cut out sugar, incl white flour, go low fat, and take moderate exercise ( a gentle walk daily). The sample diet she gave me was very strict and I followed it to a T.

I can still remember counting grapes (I was allowed 12) and not daring to go beyond the allotted number of carrot sticks daily.

In the last month I stopped gaining weight but kept a diary of my food intake so my midwife was not concerned. My numbers were great and DD sounded good in non stress tests.

I was induced on DD's due date. She was 9lbs1oz, weirdly not my biggest baby.

I have made significant changes to my diet. All growth scans fine and dietician happy with the numbers I could get. Wherever I get a high result I modify / eliminate eg I was having porridge at breakfast but not anymore. I’m doing the best I can

Yep, I follow the same advice as @si1ver, fats and proteins paired with complex carbs, and lots of meal/snack planning (my favourite is Apple and peanut butter... mmm). Trying to avoid quick, high sugar spikes from simple carbs which blood tests don't necessarily catch. We can all only do our best for our babies and ourselves, and trying to keep sugars as level as possible is the key 😊 we got this mummas!

Hi all, may I join you? Am 16 weeks pregnant with my second (seven-year gap between pregnancies) and I am borderline for GD. Have completely overhauled my diet (the dietician today said some lovely things, which was nice) and am managing to keep on track on my post-meal levels (below 7.5) but after a few weeks of managing to get my fasting level down to just below target (5.3), it is creeping up again (though some mornings it is below target). So today I’ve been started on Metformin. Bit nervous about it as I’ve been told it can upset your stomach, but will see how it goes. Just one tablet a day to start with. It’s comforting to read and interact with women going through the same thing so thank you for this thread :)

Hi @bottomflannel Hope metformin helps with your fasting levels. I'm still diet controlled at the moment, but had my first over target fasting reading yesterday since the first week so wondering whether this is that start of the tricky 32-36 week stage kicking in.
