Most horrible heartburn / acid - help!

Last night I started to feel a painful tickle at back of my throat and I thought oh no I’m getting a cold. Woke up today with a burning throat and general lousy feeling. This has eased slightly to be replaced by the most horrible acid reflux... I literally feel like my chest and windpipe and throat are being burnt! Never experienced anything like this.

I’ve had indigestion in the pregnancy but been able to manage it but this is something else. How much gaviscon type medicine can I safely take? At the moment I can’t lie on my side or be in any position other than upright as it’s just horrible!!

Any advice?

Gaviscon is ok! My local pharmacy gave me Peptac which is really similar, although the taste is pretty horrid (even the mint one!). I’m currently munching on strawberry gaviscon quite often as i have the same problem at the moment :-(

shame all my cravings are for sugary/acidy foods and drinks as well!

Hope you get some relief soon x

oh ps - box says up to 4 times a day

weegiemum · 21/11/2018 19:23

You can take pretty much as much gaviscon as you need. When I was pg (back when this was all fields ......) I had it prescribed 4x500ml at a time!

Hint: get the gp to prescribe the mint version. Maybe it was just me but I think it works better than the aniseed one plus it doesn't taste as gross when you are necking it from the bottleSmile

Try a really hot glass of water too - hot as you can stand

DH had an ulcer and he swore by it.

le42 · 21/11/2018 19:33

Thank you, I’ll neck the gaviscon!! I think it does make me a little constipated but I’d choose that over this heartburn any day! I’m eating loads of fruit and water for my bowels 🙈🙈

You can take pretty much as much as you need. I was swigging it by the bottle when I was pregnant, I had the most awful acid reflux. If it doesn't get better go the gp & get Ompererazol. I was so scared to take tablets during pregnancy but honestly the difference it made overnight was unbelievable. And the gp said me being sick constantly was worse for the baby than me taking tablets which I suppose is true!

InfantaSybilla · 21/11/2018 19:38

It sucks doesn't it? It should get better during late pregnancy when the baby moves lower (I'm thankfully at this stage now). Take as much gaviscon as you need, I'm regularly munching on rennies too and try to not eat late at night. It might be worth seeing your GP as some will prescribe it.

Dandybelle · 21/11/2018 19:43

Yes to swigging gaviscon whenever required.

Also, ranitidine is safe to take during pregnancy which helps no end.

You have my sympathies, it's miserable.

Thanks everyone that’s really helped alleviate my worry. I’m 31 weeks now and I have a low bump, I’m surprised it’s so bad. I think it’s something to do with this cold I have as it’s certainly not been this bad through the pregnancy.

I was sooooo miserable with this when pregnant. I was drinking wayyyy too much gaviscon. Eventually got ranatadine prescribed which is just super strong Zantac so take that. I found sucking mints helped, I slept with a sugar free polo in my mouth all night!

lambdroid · 21/11/2018 20:37

A prescription of omeprazole was all that helped me last time. Magic stuff! I was utterly miserable with heartburn that Gaviscon etc didn’t touch.

Definitely see a GP if it continues.

Babyredfern · 21/11/2018 20:44

I’m 28 weeks pregant I take 1 25mg of omeprazole a day it take about 10mins for it to stop the heart burn and stops the acid in my stomach for the whole day !

Shadow1234 · 21/11/2018 20:53

My daughter also had to rely on Gaviscon - she even had to have a back-up bottle in case she ran out during the night!

Athers666 · 21/11/2018 21:33

Ugh you poor thing. It's horrendous isn't it! I've been prescribed Ranitidine and it does work; if I don't take it then my throat burns and I throw up after eating. I wasted loads of money on Rennie chews, Gaviscon etc but they didn't help at all...if severe you really need something stronger. Deffo aee your GP if you're really suffering xx

le42 · 21/11/2018 21:43

I’m actually going to doctors for whooping cough and flu jab tomorrow (fun🙄) so I’ll try and see a GP to get a prescription for something stronger, thanks everyone!

Xxxx
