OMG NIPT twice not enough fetus DNA

Hello everyone!

I have a problem: I did NIPT twice (11 and 13 weeks) and both time it failed to find any DNA of my baby.

I am now 15 weeks. I am 28 and live in the Netherlands. There is only NIPT (blood) and combined test (echo + blood). Both are not covered by the insurance, so I chose NIPT. And the weirdest thing is that they don't check the size of babies neck during a regular first trimester echo (as doctors do in Germany and some other countries). For this in the Netherlands you have to pay and check it with the specialist (yes, terrible).

I did NIPT for the first time because my midwife insisted that it's safe and may guarantee the results more then echo so I can be relaxed. So I was not in a high risk at the beginning.

It turned out to be a problem. Because now they tell me that I have an increased risk having a baby with chromosome abnormalities (5-8% due to the population statistics). So they say I need a puncture.

Today I am going to the special clinic for echo and consultation. I don't want having a needle inside my womb. But it's too late for measuring the babies neck.

Maybe anyone had this? Maybe I can go somewhere else (other country) and do some other tests if it's not too late?

Please share your stories or opinions. Biscuit

Might help if you said what NIPT is. I did google it so I now know but didn't before. If your baby has Downs are you going to abort? If not, why have the NIPT test? You're only 28, the risk is not high.

It's possible to go through pregnancy without having any tests at all you know, just examinations to make sure you are alright and the baby is growing properly and in the right position.

NIPT is very regularly spoken about in these boards, just as CVS and amnio is so no need for you to have clarified, OP.

It sounds like by puncture, you mean amniocentesis. I have personally chosen not to have this for my high risk baby because the procedure itself carries a risk of miscarriage and my doctor informed me they have performed the test before, baby has been perfectly healthy, but mum has miscarried anyway. It's just not a risk I'm willing to take.

Don't do anything you don't want to do Thanks

OP

I am not sure if you are in The Hague, Amsterdam etc and if so what hospital but when I was taken care of at the Bronovo my health insurance with Zilveren Kruis got me basically everything I’d get in the UK (and more towards the third tri).

What type of insurance do you have? Basic or premium?

Have you any Dutch mum friends you could speak to about this?

Can you seek a second opinion from your huisarts?

Are you under gynaecologist care or midwife care?

Being extremely respectful I don’t believe they don’t check the size of the baby’s neck (nuchal fold) as this is the basic “back of a fag packet” way to gauge if quite frankly something isn’t right.

This is a controversial question but are you from the UK/US in origin? My mum chums are from Poland/Latvia/Singapore/Nigeria, the US and the UK. There have been quite a few “differences in experience” let’s just say....

@rachelover40 your post is bang out of line. Whatever the OP wishes to do with the results of her test isn’t for you to snoop on.

Can they try another blood redraw for the NIPT? I know some people have needed three or four before getting results, but obviously it's not ideal.

Rachel, there are other reasons why someone might want to know if their baby has a chromosomal disorder other than abortion, and Downs isn't the only thing it tests for. I don't think your post was very helpful at all, especially in a situation where someone is obviously stressed and understandably upset.

Kescilly · 21/11/2018 09:17

I can sympathize because I am waiting on a redraw for the Harmony test. For what it’s worth, we did the NT measurement as well but it seemed so imprecise. I don’t have confident in that test at all.

I’m sorry that you’re going through this, but you’re not alone.

@Kescilly

I feel your worry.
Wish you good luck!
How many weeks are you?
Let me know when you get the results.
But anyway NIPT is not a 100% diagnosis. What we need now is to stay calm. For our babies❤️
