Intense waves of back pain. 27 weeks

I've had back pain all through my pregnancy before, but this is different.

Although not regular, I've been having waves of severe back pain that radiates to my hips. They last around 30 seconds and then go away.

Has anyone had this and been fine?

Also, not sure if it's connected, but my left eye keeps 'shaking'. If I'm focusing on something the image will shake. It feels like a twitch.

I'm a worrier anyway, but the back pain feels similar to my early labour pains with DC1.

I will give antenatal a call tomorrow, but in the meantime does anyone have any reassurance or advice?

How frequently are the back pains?

VforVienetta · 20/11/2018 22:56

I'd prob call 111 to speak to a doc if I were you.

Pepper123123 · 20/11/2018 23:01

@VforVienetta they're not regular. They've been anything from 10 minutes apart to 20 minutes apart.

I've considered ringing antenatal triage, but I don't know if I'm being over the top. Especially because I'd have to wake my mother up to come look after my DD.
Obviously I would if I had to, just haven't been sure if I'm thinking too much into it.

How long's it been going on for?
Sounds like something that needs investigating tonight tbh - please call 111 or your community midwife.
27wks is too early to wait it out I think.

Hawkmoth · 20/11/2018 23:05

Blurred vision alone would worry me enough to call someone.

shouldidoitspoilt · 20/11/2018 23:07

Could be kidney getting enlarged due to baby leaning on ureter
Is it flooring you?
Must call midwife x or maternity if it's not

Pepper123123 · 20/11/2018 23:07

It's been 10 years since my last pregnancy, so I feel like I'm doing this all for the first time again.

I have a number for 24hour midwife, so I'll give them a call and see what they think.

Yes deff call them

Is it in waves

Diddlysquats · 20/11/2018 23:08

How do you feel?

Pepper123123 · 20/11/2018 23:08

@shouldidoitspoilt it's intense enough to make me stop what I'm doing and actually groan out loud I'd say.

As for my kidneys, I'm not sure. I have kidney issues anyway, so they're never straight forward.

Giving triage a call now.
Will update when I can.

Thank you all for your advice. Very much appreciated.

I had a problem with my kidneys in last pregnancy and I had a urine bag because of it

I would go to maternity get a urine dip and an ultra sound of them to check if they are enlarged xxx good luck

VforVienetta · 21/11/2018 00:38

Hope you got through and are ok OP. Brew

Pepper123123 · 21/11/2018 12:03

I was advised over the phone to take paracetamol and rest. They didn't seem the least bit concerned.

Not really sure what to do from here.

I suppose I'll keep an eye on things and ring them again if need be.

Shock They don't want to dip urine??

I would go up to day care anyway

Pepper123123 · 21/11/2018 13:34

My mother was with me, so she spoke to the midwife after me.

An actual quote from the midwife "the thing is, these young girls get a headache and think they have preeclampsia. It's not always the case".

Apparently my blurred vision is likely because I wear glasses! I've worn glasses for 18 years and never had spots in my vision or images jumping around.

I feel like they see me as a silly young girl making a fuss.

My mother insisted that if I feel the same in an hour she's driving me to them.
I've taken paracetamol just to placate them. It's not going through pain that concerns me, it's the potentially dangerous bits.

I was also told that I wouldn't have back pain like this without contractions in my stomach if it was preterm labour.
I know this isn't true, because my stomach didn't start contracting until I'd had a day of back pain with my first DC.

Ugh. That’s awful care.
Your mum is right - i hope you do get seen.
Also - second child ffs! This isn’t your first rodeo!
Take care OP and don’t be fobbed off if you still have concerns. Brew

RatRolyPoly · 21/11/2018 14:09

At the very least I'd be making sure they dip your urine, even if it's just seeing the nurse at your GP surgery or a walk-in centre. If you have a UTI the spasming of the bladder can start your uterus off, and that can turn into full blown contractions if the UTI isn't treated. It takes them two minutes to dip your urine - take a sample with you in a clean jam jar if you can.

Cleojinx · 21/11/2018 14:51

To be fair the general advice is to first take paracetamol and have a bath as if this takes the pain off it's unlikely to be labour. It seems insensitive when you're worried but it is the advice most are given when unsure of what is happening.

Try not to panic, see how the paracetamol/bath go and if you're still in pain call again and tell them that you have taken their advice but the pains did not subside and are still regular and in waves. Whatever happens go and get checked.

Good luck x
