Low lying placenta

Hi all, I’m currently 22+2 weeks pregnant and just had my 20 week scan.
This is my first pregnancy and baby was fine and healthy, but the sonographer told me my placenta was really low so he’s booked me in for another scan in 10 weeks.
He said it’s not to worry at this stage it could move up later on?

Has anybody else had this? And did it move for you? I’m getting quite worried Sad

I was told the same at my 20 week scan and have to go back at 36 weeks to check it's moved otherwise it's a C-Section.

From what I've read, they move up in time more often than not so I would try and not to worry just yet (easier said than done I know). I've done a bit of research into C-Sections (avoiding horror stories) just in case I need one and it's helped me to be prepared just in case.

I had this at my 20 week scan and just had my 31 week scan this morning to check on it and it’s completely moved away now so I can give birth and no need for a section.

I’m really happy it’s moved but even if it hadn’t, I think it’s better to know in advance after your next scan and plan a calm and safe section if needed, as the alternative is too dangerous for you and the baby.

My midwife mentioned that 9 out of 10 cases they see at 20 weeks are better by 34 weeks.

Thank you for you replies ladies I feel so reassured already I’ve been worrying and over thinking all morning.
I hope and pray it moves up but waiting 10 weeks just feels so far away!
@Olivecake so glad it’s moved for you! Good luck with your labour and birth hope it all goes well.
@Tinymarie I hope it moves for us as well wish you the best of luck!

I had this, but I also had other complications (pprom) and DD needed to be delivered at 34 weeks, the placenta was still too low at that point so had a c-section. It was fine, we're all happy and healthy.

Olivecake · 19/11/2018 13:43

I was worried too and remember thinking it would be ages to the next scan but somehow those weeks flew by! I hope it moves for you too but even if it doesn’t at least you will be in safe hands and be doing the best thing for you both ❤️

TinyMarie · 19/11/2018 13:44

Thank you @Peonyblush1, best of luck to you too!

95% of placentas that are low-lying at 20 weeks will have moved up and out of the way before birth so there’s a very high chance this will not cause you any problems.

I had it last pregnancy and it had moved by the next scan. I've got it this time and really hoping it doesn't (I'm having a section but don't want to fight for it).

Pomfluff · 19/11/2018 14:59

Mine was still low at 26 weeks (1cm from cervix) but moved up completely by 33 weeks! Happens 90% of the time so please try not to worry.

I did however find conflicting info online about how to deal with PP while wait for it to move up, mostly from posters the USA. Many women are advised to go on pelvic rest (no sex, orgasms anything), and some were put on total bedrest. Obviously there are different degrees of PP, with the ones covering the cervix being most serious, but there were definitely several women who were put on pelvic rest for a normal low placenta.

My dr (Europe) didn't give any restrictions however did mention off-hand that if I had any bleeding, I need to inform them that I have PP.

loveskaka · 19/11/2018 15:12

Had the same and it moved out the way Grin. X

StuntCroissant · 19/11/2018 15:15

Had low lying placenta in both my pregnancies and they'd moved up by 34 weeks. 95% of the time they do. Just see it as a bonus opportunity to see your baby.

MaryBoBary · 19/11/2018 15:16

I had this with my son and by the 36 (I think) week scan it had moved up and I gave birth naturally.

Peonyblush1 · 19/11/2018 15:25

Thank you for all your reply ladies you’ve really put my mind at ease!
I’m hoping mine will move too, don’t know if my baby being upside down could play a part in it, he always seems to be facing head down and doesn’t move from the position.

I had it first time and it moved.

MiowCatChat · 19/11/2018 16:03

I had this at 20w and it had moved well out of the way ("over 10cm" apparently) at 34w, which was a relief!

EnglishIrishRose · 20/11/2018 08:38

Also had this and it moved by 32 weeks. I would advise researching and planning for a C section just so it's not so scary and unknown - that really helped me come to terms with it just in case I needed one.

gruber · 20/11/2018 10:13

I had this, diagnosed with complete placenta previa at 20 week scan. Had repeat scans and it had moved by 36 weeks so no need for a c section. In most cases it does move - while you might want to research c sections and think about your plans if it doesn’t move, be reassured that in the vast majority of cases it does!

Blondebrunette1 · 20/11/2018 13:23

Yes and mine moved so no need for c section but I felt significantly less movements than with previous pregnancy's as it was acting like a cushion. I didn't feel kicks until 21 weeks so I panicked but appantly this was why. X

Cakelaur · 20/11/2018 20:02

I was told I had complete previa at 20 weeks. We were put on pelvic rest, no flying etc... had a scan at 32 weeks and it hadn't moved enough. Just had another scan at 36 and it's moved enough. So we're free to deliver naturally!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻hopefully yours will move too... there's a lot of growing to be done between 20-40 weeks. Good luck xx
